  • Hi!
This is my long term review of the Nikon Z6 with Atomos Ninja V. This does not go heavly in to specs as other videos do that better.
I talk about what made me sell my Sony A7RII and Sony FS5 with Atomos Shogun inferno.
I also feature and talk about some of my favourite accessories for the Z6. Like SmallRigs Halfcage.

I switched from Canon after 10 years, I wanted a true hybrid camera to remove the need for separate video cameras and lenses. I bought an a7iii and a z6, and used them for a year of shooting videos and weddings. I kept the z6, and decided that was the platform to invest in for the future. For me it came down to the EVF, SOOC Images, build, menus, speed, grip, better IBIS, and lenses on the Nikon.

Very much the same for me. I was honestly surprised how easy the switch was. I took med less that a week to switch out my two zoom lenses to nikons equivalent without spending a dime.

    Good overview.
The Ninja V is a no-brainer. 1TB of XQD cards is $500 more than the Ninja, a 1TB SSD, batteries and accessories.
It also removes the 30 minute time limit to recording.

I've finally made the decision and bought a z6, it's due to arrive in a few weeks, it's good to see someone actually using it properly and showcasing its full potential.
Since I have Nikon glass for my other body I'm set and happy that it'll work great (incidentally I have a 24-70 2.8 like you).
Also, if the video alone wasn't enough, adding the bike clip definitely sold me on getting one

  • @marinrealestatephotography

I don't know about the Z6, but I do know that your dad is AWESOME!!! Old guys rule!!! I think that one issue about the adapter on the Z6 is that it won't autofocus Nikon F Mount lenses that don't have a motor. So the screw-drive AF-D lenses, which are generally less expensive, like the 80-200 f/2.8 or a lot of the older non-AF S lenses, won't autofocus on the adapter. I am hoping that the D760 will be mirrorless but have a "built in" adapter that has an AF motor that will AF screw drive lenses.

Nicely done! I'm still shooting internal 8-bit with my Z6, bought last April. It looks pretty good to my eye, at least for youTube. Also waiting for ProRes Raw at which point I might consider adding the Ninja V. Have you tried the touchscreen for video focussing? I've been pretty impressed with that (reviewed it in a video).
I also plan to add a SmallRig cage and accessories, but as others have mentioned fan noise from the Ninja might be an issue. I use the Tascam D60 MkII to record audio and was thinking of using my Røde NTG2. If noise isn't too bad, maybe a trip through Audacity noise reduction or something similar wouldn't be too much trouble.
Kudos to your dad from an old ski mountaineer sidelined by injury. Look forward to more of your videos.

One tip on external power. You can buy dummy battery and hook to a 9v power bank.

I've personally found that a big XQD is the main accessory I need. Not just a joke, as not many people have them around and all the used ones seem to come with like a 32gb card and who has time for that! I bought a used 120gb Sony G XQD from eBay for £100 which is super cheap but still 5x more than a UHS-II SD.

One of my all time favorite lens is Carl Zeiss Contax645 120mm F4 Makro, however I couldn't find any easy C645 to Z adapter, let alone a tilt shift one. The lens has really large image circle and flat field, would be ideal for tilt shift adapter however Contax 645 uses electronic controlled aperture has made it difficult. Very interested in your mamiya 645 120mm macro solution.

Thank you for the review. I am surprised that you find the Z6 rig with the Ninja V easier to use than the FS5. You just take the FS5 out of the bag, shoot and put it back. With the Z6 you have to assemble everything and maybe even use an external audio recorder or preamplifier. I would have liked to see you on the ski slopes with both set-ups. I am considering a hybrid rig too, but only because I cannot afford a high quality camcorder like the FS5.

I still very much like the FS5. But that paird with the big Shogun Inferno was substantially large than the Z6 rig with Ninja V. However right now I shoot on the S1H and some times use it with the Ninja V. I did however upgrade my backpack as well 😄

Thinking about z6 but not going to pull trigger until there is confirmation date on prores raw and also cost of the update.
Definitely good advice on this video not to buy gear on promises.
Also time is on buyers side of things to wait and see the development of native lens range. Nikon isn’t as good as Sony AF straight up, so throw a FTZ adapter in the mix and it gets even worse.
The z6 right now just seems as though the start up cost are way too high especially considering you have to compromise on some things. When everything is taken into account it’s a lot more $$$

  • @miklosnemeth8566
    @miklosnemeth8566 Před 4 lety +1

Yes, exactly as "@UCpo6bxrW6ZShXWJe-U37o_w" commented. It's a shame that the brilliant old Nikkor AF-D lenses like 80-200 f/2.8 are not supported by the new system, the Z6 has great IBIS, it could have been a perfect match. A D760 a true hybrid system would be awesome, but I don't think it will ever happen. Honestly, I expected Nikon was doing something like that instead of the Z line. This Z6 is okish, but no way appealing enough, not even for a Nikon fan like me. I have noticed during this video a couple of situations where continuous video AF was still not robust enough on the Z6, and there is still no tracking eye AF in video, a year after Z6 is out. I don't know, I am not convinced at all, Nikon still has a long road to walk to catch up Sony in some areas. Sony recent cameras all have unlimited video recording: A7RIV, A9II, A6600, A6400, all of them can be powered via USB while recording video, too. XQD cards are expensive and esoteric, I don't think it was a smart move to go XQD. Recent SD card technology is excellent and inexpensive vs XQD. Even Panasonic changed its mind and released the S1H with double SD card slots. The recent Z50 came out with an UHS-II SD card slot, this is the proper way.

Very valid points. The Lack of autofocus in video mode is bad. I guess I just been so used to shooting manual focus for most of my professional career that any autofocus just seemed good. the lack of USB charging is also something that I really wish that they would have solved.
