- Hi!
This is my long term review of the Nikon Z6 with Atomos Ninja V. This does not go heavly in to specs as other videos do that better.
I talk about what made me sell my Sony A7RII and Sony FS5 with Atomos Shogun inferno.
I also feature and talk about some of my favourite accessories for the Z6. Like SmallRigs Halfcage.
FS5+Shogun Inferno review: • Video - Krátké a kreslené filmy
I switched from Canon after 10 years, I wanted a true hybrid camera to remove the need for separate video cameras and lenses. I bought an a7iii and a z6, and used them for a year of shooting videos and weddings. I kept the z6, and decided that was the platform to invest in for the future. For me it came down to the EVF, SOOC Images, build, menus, speed, grip, better IBIS, and lenses on the Nikon.
Very much the same for me. I was honestly surprised how easy the switch was. I took med less that a week to switch out my two zoom lenses to nikons equivalent without spending a dime.
Can you recommend a gimble for the Z6 and a microphone?
Magnus Eriksson I use the Ronin S, it handles the z6 with a microphone. And has a ton of great features on their smartphone app.
What are your favorite lenses for the Z6?
Good overview.
The Ninja V is a no-brainer. 1TB of XQD cards is $500 more than the Ninja, a 1TB SSD, batteries and accessories.
It also removes the 30 minute time limit to recording.
Wonderful job. Look forward to your future projects.
Great review, loved it! Thank you!!!
Great review! I just ordered a Z6 myself.
Flexibility is often underestimated. Thanks for a great vid!
Love this video. We're on a similar path. Will follow your progress
I've finally made the decision and bought a z6, it's due to arrive in a few weeks, it's good to see someone actually using it properly and showcasing its full potential.
Since I have Nikon glass for my other body I'm set and happy that it'll work great (incidentally I have a 24-70 2.8 like you).
Also, if the video alone wasn't enough, adding the bike clip definitely sold me on getting one
Glad to help! Thats why i do these videos.
I don't know about the Z6, but I do know that your dad is AWESOME!!! Old guys rule!!! I think that one issue about the adapter on the Z6 is that it won't autofocus Nikon F Mount lenses that don't have a motor. So the screw-drive AF-D lenses, which are generally less expensive, like the 80-200 f/2.8 or a lot of the older non-AF S lenses, won't autofocus on the adapter. I am hoping that the D760 will be mirrorless but have a "built in" adapter that has an AF motor that will AF screw drive lenses.
A year on from this video and Nikon is proving to be a real contender in the hybrid video space now with the introduction of Black Magic RAW recording also now.
Yes! I as a resolve editor would love to see more support for BM videoassist.
Nicely done! I'm still shooting internal 8-bit with my Z6, bought last April. It looks pretty good to my eye, at least for youTube. Also waiting for ProRes Raw at which point I might consider adding the Ninja V. Have you tried the touchscreen for video focussing? I've been pretty impressed with that (reviewed it in a video).
I also plan to add a SmallRig cage and accessories, but as others have mentioned fan noise from the Ninja might be an issue. I use the Tascam D60 MkII to record audio and was thinking of using my Røde NTG2. If noise isn't too bad, maybe a trip through Audacity noise reduction or something similar wouldn't be too much trouble.
Kudos to your dad from an old ski mountaineer sidelined by injury. Look forward to more of your videos.
Get the battery brick for continuous power. It misses control buttons but has an arrangement to remove or change one battery at a time while camera stays in working condition through other battery...
One tip on external power. You can buy dummy battery and hook to a 9v power bank.
By the way I had the same path as you. Already own Ninja v choosing between Z6 or S1. Z6 won base on price and MC21 adaptor not support continue autofocus.
Great review thanks ! Can we start a video recording with the application phone ?
I've personally found that a big XQD is the main accessory I need. Not just a joke, as not many people have them around and all the used ones seem to come with like a 32gb card and who has time for that! I bought a used 120gb Sony G XQD from eBay for £100 which is super cheap but still 5x more than a UHS-II SD.
About time !! truth from someone who was not paid from Sony
One of my all time favorite lens is Carl Zeiss Contax645 120mm F4 Makro, however I couldn't find any easy C645 to Z adapter, let alone a tilt shift one. The lens has really large image circle and flat field, would be ideal for tilt shift adapter however Contax 645 uses electronic controlled aperture has made it difficult. Very interested in your mamiya 645 120mm macro solution.
Any luck?
Thank you for the review. I am surprised that you find the Z6 rig with the Ninja V easier to use than the FS5. You just take the FS5 out of the bag, shoot and put it back. With the Z6 you have to assemble everything and maybe even use an external audio recorder or preamplifier. I would have liked to see you on the ski slopes with both set-ups. I am considering a hybrid rig too, but only because I cannot afford a high quality camcorder like the FS5.
I still very much like the FS5. But that paird with the big Shogun Inferno was substantially large than the Z6 rig with Ninja V. However right now I shoot on the S1H and some times use it with the Ninja V. I did however upgrade my backpack as well 😄
thanks mate.. awesome...
Liked this video just because your dad is awesome.
Same, I am so impressed, it touched my stone of a heart actually :-)
Good video.. I’m using z6 and ninja.. what is your favorite lut for nlog ? Have you tried to balance the z6 on a gimbal using the atomos..
there is loads of ac adpters for en-el15 kinda camera
Has anyone heard when ProRes RAW is coming to Premiere Pro?
What is the name of the tilt shift adaptor that you are using please.
Thinking about z6 but not going to pull trigger until there is confirmation date on prores raw and also cost of the update.
Definitely good advice on this video not to buy gear on promises.
Also time is on buyers side of things to wait and see the development of native lens range. Nikon isn’t as good as Sony AF straight up, so throw a FTZ adapter in the mix and it gets even worse.
The z6 right now just seems as though the start up cost are way too high especially considering you have to compromise on some things. When everything is taken into account it’s a lot more $$$
I hear you. Well said. It is super frustrating that we aren't getting any date on the ProresRAW up date. I sort of feels like the Z6 with ProresRAW is the same as Sony A7SIII, they are just a few months away for years now.
Hey if ever you can get your hands on the Tokina 16-28 f/2.8 will love to know how it works with Nikon Z6 or Z7. Autofocus, noises etc etc
Will do, I have a connection with Sigmas Scandinavian agent so if there's any Sigma lens you are curious about let me know and I will try to get it and test it.
Creative Nords awesome bro. Sigma released a really good comprehensive list of their lenses that are compatible with FTZ. Love them as a company.
Thanks for the review, but I want to see more of your father, a real inspiration. More soon!! Thanks ✨👍🇸🇪
Tack Magnus! I am working on making a documentary about him and his Friends.
thanks for the effort and the sharing. sorry to read you were unimpressed with the z6's audio capabilities. is having a camera that can offer outstanding stills along with 10bit/422 4k @ 24p/30p/60/ with decent 1080p slo-mo AND with GOOD audio a myth? thumbs up.
No I think it's called the Panasonic S1 or S1H;). Since I record my audio separately any ways it's no the end of the world for me.
RAW is here - it'll be interesting to see your workflow and if it's practical to use.
Do you have a link for the half cage.
www.smallrig.com/smallrig-quick-release-half-cage-for-nikon-z6-and-nikon-z7-2262.html
From what I read on cinema5d the workflow is close to that of Sony FS5 and prores Raw.
Great Video, however I have seen a few reviews mentioning problems with Z6 and noise, both with adapted lenses making focus noise and also the ninja v is also not quiet (fan noise). Have you had any issues? or or you recording dual sound?
Your are absolutely right. Especially the ninja v makes a lot more noise than my old Shogun inferno. I record to my iPad Pro with a Zoom U44 and a condenser microphone just off camera.
@@creativenords Great solution for studio work (not my primary concern) I want a camera package that will work even in "run and gun" / dokument-style content have you used the Z6 and the Ninja V in those situations? and if so how did you get usable audio?
Not really... I used it once with a LAV setup I was not impressed. Compared to the same LAV on my FS5.
@@BorsukenSlayer That's what I want as well, so please share when you get to know more.
Does autofocus work with the Tamron 24-70 2.8 vc g1 on your z6?
Yes works it works good.
Hej! Funderar på en ninja V, men funderar lite på hur mycket den inbyggda fläkten stör om du tex har en mikrofon monterad på Smallrig cagen samtidigt? Något du haft problem med?
Hej! Ja tyvärr massor🙃
@@creativenords Misstänkte det! Tack för snabbt svar 👍
Is there any 1:1 macro lens on Mamiya? What model you use? All i know is 1:4
Take a look here mbphotox.wordpress.com/2016/01/17/mamiya/ it describes the lens i used in the video.
Hi - I'm a Nikon hybrid shooter but I've never used Nlog - is it it difficult to expose for and grade. I only use Nikon's flat profile that is very easy to grade.
Kind of... Mainly because there is no N-Log to rec709 LUT that's looks half way decent. I use Panasonic's V-Log LUT that gives me a good place to start.
I've been shooting in nlog for 10 months now
The absolute best Luts to use this from
colorizer.net
I purchased it early on and I'm glad I did n-log is the only one that I want to shoot now
In my opinion it's better than the official lut that Nikon recently came out with
Creative Nords Nikon released a N log Lut a month or so back
Yes I have it in Resolve 16.1. But the common knowledge is that Nikon stressed out that LUT and it's way over saturated. The skintones tend to pull a bit to much on the red side with nikons official LUT aswell.
@@creativenords Take Nikon's LUT and set intensity to 50%. If you know how (I did it on Premiere), recreate a new LUT at this intensity and use it on the Ninja V to monitor NLog footage. Doing this changed my Z6 filming life! Everything looks so fucking good now.
Update released today for 12bit
Sending my Z6 to Nikon tomorrow.
@@creativenords that's going to be interesting content for you.
Nikon Z6 II now has USB power. As for 30 min limit removal, it still a wish.
EH-5c + EP-5B.
What tilt shift do you use?
You can tilt focus plan and correct perspectives with shift
It's not question of which camera is better, they are different usage. FS5 is more broadcasting with assistance. Z6 is more running gun one man style.
Absolutely right. I could have done a better job of getting that point across. Thanks!
We are waiting... IMPATIENTLY for the promised ProRes RAW but no word... it’s like it never really was the pitch for switching to the Z6 system and plucking down $5K for the Filmmakers Kit...
Starting to think of shoot N-Log and EAT the extra storage $$$ cost. Not getting any younger! But I see there is a LUTz issue?
What is the LUT issue you heard? I downloaded the Nikon LUTs but not use it yet.
@@kevinchung1492 Nikon's LUT is way too harsh. If you know how to recreate it at 50% intensity and pull that into the Ninja V to monitor, well, that's when using the Z6 and Ninja V combo with NLog becomes a lot of fun!
gosh man. I didn't think that it is possible for anyone to waffle more than I do on a video! ;) I just got my Z6 0 the Firmware update v.3 really makes it a beast. Great video (but a touch too long)
Yes, exactly as "@UCpo6bxrW6ZShXWJe-U37o_w" commented. It's a shame that the brilliant old Nikkor AF-D lenses like 80-200 f/2.8 are not supported by the new system, the Z6 has great IBIS, it could have been a perfect match. A D760 a true hybrid system would be awesome, but I don't think it will ever happen. Honestly, I expected Nikon was doing something like that instead of the Z line. This Z6 is okish, but no way appealing enough, not even for a Nikon fan like me. I have noticed during this video a couple of situations where continuous video AF was still not robust enough on the Z6, and there is still no tracking eye AF in video, a year after Z6 is out. I don't know, I am not convinced at all, Nikon still has a long road to walk to catch up Sony in some areas. Sony recent cameras all have unlimited video recording: A7RIV, A9II, A6600, A6400, all of them can be powered via USB while recording video, too. XQD cards are expensive and esoteric, I don't think it was a smart move to go XQD. Recent SD card technology is excellent and inexpensive vs XQD. Even Panasonic changed its mind and released the S1H with double SD card slots. The recent Z50 came out with an UHS-II SD card slot, this is the proper way.
Very valid points. The Lack of autofocus in video mode is bad. I guess I just been so used to shooting manual focus for most of my professional career that any autofocus just seemed good. the lack of USB charging is also something that I really wish that they would have solved.
Creative Nords ;
May I suggest stretching out your Z’s? Zzzz... It sounds like, to my ears, you are saying “C” instead of “Z”. Good video otherwise!
All constructive feedback is greatly appreciated. It's hard to get my English where I want it. when literally the only time I speak it is when I do this videos once a month. I guess I will have to start making more videos 😊
