I like the way you guys do this show in that you see all the little goofy stuff that happens when working on an old car project (like the exhaust pipes getting in the way). Compared to the speed channel-like shows that always show a hospital clean shop with old parts that always come apart easily and everything is always perfect, the way you do it is definitely a breath of fresh air. Working these projects is always challenging, dirty, but always a lot of fun, thanks again.

I opened a large pair of pliers to turn the funky fastner. Good job. I had a 1972 Mach 1 that was the same color. 300hp from the factory. But at 5400 rpm. I have a 70 mach 1 now.
The use of the brass hammer is a good thing because it does not creat spark, which is good thing on fuel system work.The fact that it causes less damage is only secondary.Good call either way!

Nice work!! More than likely your gas gauge will still not read correctly even after the new tank and sending unit. I had to tweak the float on my '71 Mach to get the gauge to read correctly. The best way to do it is to put exactly 5 gallons in first. If it reads 1/4 tank, you're all good! If not, jack up the car on the driver's side as high as you dare. You have to get it up on the 2 passenger side wheels. Pull the sending unit, tweak, reinstall, and check it again. Repeat as many times as necessary. The gas will not spill out of the tank when you have the car jacked up. Also, gluing the sending unit o-ring in with a little gel super is a big help. Look forward to the next video!!!!
That was what our "out of tank experiment" was for, we could have done a better job explaining the why of what we were doing. But you are right, After my experience with putting a sender in a Fairlane then having to drian the tank because it just wasn't reading right, I always check.
I know this was done three years ago. At the time, they did not re-manufacture the fuel vapor unit. However, they do now, should you ever need to replace yours! 😀

This video helped me out quite a bit. I have a '73 LTD that i am dropping the tank out of, and couldn't figure out how the filler neck was attached. I appreciate showing the technique for installing the rubber, and how to get the filler neck mounted.

Great show. do you have anything showing the installation of a new fuel vapor line on a 71-73 Mustang?
I have never had an after market sending unit read correctly. I use a technoversions meter match to calibrate the gauge.
1. Can you put an LED bore scope in a gas tank safely? I need to know, because I have to inspect a tank, but thought if there were any sparks, that I'd go *BOOM* and die all over the place.
2. Have you guys checked the resistance on these new senders?? The numbers are ALL OVER THE MAP! These units are all made in China now and the resistance is NOT synced up with the factory gauge. It might help a lot of people to do an episode on installing a fuel gauge interface, like the Classic Instruments SN34 Module. I used this to sync up the gauge with the aftermarket sending unit. It works well.
Any time you are dealing with fuel you risk harm. I will say that I won't recommemd doing something if it makes you nervous. Also, it can be really tough to see/orient your scope in the tank. Things to NOT do...open flame OR Cigarettes.
Tanks a lot for the video.. by the way the hard fuel line to the front may be clogged too.. replace it.. or at least disconnect both ends... extend the hard line with some fuel hose.. use a speedometer cable core like a plumbing snake.. using thick palm leather gloves and a variable speed power drill.. wedge it in as far as you can get it.. holding the cable straight.. you can use the variable speed drill. to turn the speedometer cable so the twist in the cable windings pulls the cable in.. this will go around bends really easy.. replacement of the fuel line is a better idea..
We blew air down the line from the tank to the pump. Plenty of air. We have stainless lines in the car so I feel pretty good about that. But the speedo cable trick sounds interesting.
E85 is a great to use to clean out the old tank if it's not rusty. I'm not saying run it in your car, but pump the old fuel out, fill the tank with e85, let it sit a day or two and pump the e85 out. I was shocked at just how clean the tank was afterwards. We have a used oil/fuel/antifreeze dump stations so disposing of it wasn't bad either.
Interesting. Our big problem is we don't have the dump stations here. I like the idea though.
I would have changed the tank anyway....most of the time the cars people get to restore the gas tank is done anyway!

Does this mustang had a return gazoline line?And witch EFI system i have to choose?

The '71-'73 Mustangs have a vapor return line (shown in the video) This ca be used as a return. You would have to put in an external pump. I like the look of the Holley Sniper system for EFI.

I’ve had 3 sending units in mine since 65 and your sending unit looked a heck of a lot better then mine.
I put the sending unit in there in 2000. It was new. So it blew me away that it looked that bad. BUT now that I think about it, that was nearly 20 years ago. Time flies...
I have the same MustangMach1, the problem is, try putting gas in, it takes about half a gallon , and then gas comes out like its full, what do you think is the problem? Appreciate your help. Thanks
You probably have a venting issue, you may want to pull the tank and check the vent on the top of the tank which is supposed to let the air out as gas is going in. A lot of times the filter in those gets plugged up and it doesn't vent like it should.
Why is is their rust lines above the taillight is that a common place to check for if purchasing one?
I had the car Chemically dipped...won't do that ever again. The taillights rust on these but more from around the lights. Trunk floors and rear pans are a problem too since the '71-'73s like to leak at the back windows.
How do I paint the exterior of a new tank? Mine is galvanised and has a coat of oil on it.
Clean the tank with dawn and water, then hit it with a wax and grease remover then prime and paint.
Most videos now tell you what tools you need to use. I see a phillips head screwdriver and socket size would be nice so I'm not climbing out from under the car 10x to get the right size.

I can’t seem to get my fuel gauge to I’ve had it repaired. They say it supposed to be working but I’ve replaced the sending unit and it still not working. Is there a fuse for it.
No. But check your grounds. If it is an early Ford, the cluster/gauge has to be grounded.

It does suck a bit but really, it isn't that bad. Just jack the back of the car up safely and it will be pretty easy.

@ 4:13 - That Vapor return line fitting you can buy. I'm doing the gas tank on my 73 mach 1. CjPonyParts carries that fitting. The brand name on it is ACP, and it runs $70.
For installation, on my car the rubber hose on that vapor return fitting was only about 2ft long. You can disconnect and reconnect it right in front of the gas tank. So on my car, I don't need to do any song and dance with the gas tank partially dropped and trying to disconnect that hose from on top of the tank. I just disconnect it from the other end, drop the tank, and then the hose and vapor line fitting come right out with it.
