  • In this Auron character analysis we take a look at one of the significant secondary characters of Final Fantasy X, who facilitates much of the events that transpire and fashioned after the hero's journey initiates Tidus's call to adventure. The combined features of Auron's design, demeanour and contributions to the story make him an enduring fan favourite in the Final Fantasy series and video game characters more broadly, in this episode we unpack precisely why.

As someone who turned 35 this year, I can appreciate Auron’s view more than I expected. The idea that the world is more than it seems, and to have that knowledge…yet still seek to change it for the better despite being burned in the past….is a powerful thing. It says a lot about him.

You make a great point here and I've also noticed how perceptions of FF characters can change as one matures and returns to the games. Auron had no personal stake in the future of Spira, he was dead already and had suffered enough, but the fact he selflessly pursued that for his friends progeny and the future of others is a testament to his character - everyone could benefit from being a little more Auron as they age. Nice observation :)

Funny story: I played Kingdom Hearts 2 before FFX (I got into Final Fantasy because of Kingdom Hearts), and his appearance in that game spoiled to me that he was dead! But I also love how in KH2 they gave Auron Tidus's line: “This is my story”. To me, it really shows that he wanted Tidus to be a continuation of him, but one that actually succeeded!

One thing I noticed after watching this was how detailed Aurons scheming was. He developed a three tiered system of confidence. In the inner circle was him, Jecht, and the fayth. In the second layer was Tidus, who receives insights on how to handle Yuna, but is never given the whole cake. In the third tier was Yuna, who never gets the real Auron, not really even when he dies.
What I think was interesting was how Auron never moves Tidus or Yuna from one tier of confidence to the next. Instead, he allows the fayth to induct Tidus into the first tier, and allows Tidus to induct Yuna into the second tier. A brilliant chess game throughout.
I think the scene when Yuna passes out after acquiring the aeon in Bevelle is the epitome of Auron's scheming, especially his three tiered level of confidence. He comes out of the shadows when he sees Tidus watching Yuna meditating, and first introduces the idea that the fayth have been dreaming for far to long and should be returned to rest.
This plants this idea in Tidus' mind and allows it a lot of time to grow until the Fayth directly pitch the idea to Tidus on Mount Gagazet.
Thinking about this, it must have been a clever scheme between Auron and the Bevelle fayth. The Bevelle fayth was in the chamber at the time, having just entered Yuna, and so he could have come out to Tidus and made the pitch then and there. It seems that he made the choice not to, in order to give Auron time to work on Tidus.
Auron's last movement in that scene was to withdraw when Yuna collapses in Tidus' arms, in order to enable Tidus' developing emotional attachment by granting intimacy to the moment.
It's really amazing how this guy schemes with every action, including leaving a room.

I just realized that one of the themes in FFX that often got overlooked is the relationships of daddies with their kids:
There's the obvious Tidus and Jecht relationship but there are also several more:
    - Yuna and Braska
    - Seymour and Jysscal
    - Rikku and Cid
    - Khimari as the temporary foster father to Yuna
    - and Auron as the foster dad to Yuna, Tidus, and Rikku

Just stumbled across this video. It's really well put together and your analysis is really great with your points put across in an eloquent and lucid fashion.
One of my favourite auron moments is when he gets asked by Tidus 'why him' - Auron gives the impression that he's been waiting for this moment to explain, though hes almost dismissive and says something like 'very well, I'll show you. My memories.'
We then see a younger Auron asked by Jecht to look after his son back in zanarkand. Auron is taken aback and at first questions how he would ever even find the zanarkand jecht is from. But then he realises the importance of what he is being asked of, and eventually gathers himself and says 'yes, I'll guard him with my life.'
When the memory ends and we come back to tidus and auron, auron simply says 'that is why' as he walks away. It's such a powerful moment and shows that his travelling across time, remaining in the world of the living; the essential reason for all this is the promise he made to a friend. He is truly a man of his word and 💯 an idealist as you say!
When he says those three simple words 'that is why' it's almost as if auron holds a bit of contempt for himself for being such an idealist and not really understanding the magnitude of the promise. But he has still kept his word. And that stands for something. Perhaps it stands for everything.
It's just such a wonderfully powerful moment in the game and shows the true side of auron's character, which as you say, up until that moment had not really been revealed.

I had a sudden realisation after watching this - doesn’t Kimahri know that Auron is unsent? He never mentions anything even though he knew taking Yuna was ‘the wish of a dying man’ which adds a whole different layer to his character

    • @Panthera9
      @Panthera9 Před 2 lety +1

Yeah, if I remember right the phrasing is something like "the wish of a man who was facing death", so we naturally assume it means Braska and the Final Summoning. Such an excellent touch.

Tedus is the protagonist. The story follows the hero's journey, and in the hero's journey the hero is aided by a mentor, in star wars it's Obi wan Kanobe, in LotR it's Gandalf, in FFX it's Aaron.

  • @brandoncannon4093

I feel oddly drawn to Auron due to growing up without my father for most my life and knowing he has done bad and won't change but still having a step father and other mentor figures in my life to insure I will never be on the same path as him. Before you say anything it took a lot for me to accept my biological father after he literally made my heart stop and I had to be recussitated due to blood loss, my grandma begged me to forgive him and my older brother while I saw her in the hospital before she died so my hands are tied.

I read somewhere, years and years ago, that the arm in the sling was the mark of a ronin; a samurai without a master. Would certainly fit Auron. And apparently Banishing Blade is a nod to an old custom of spitting saki to "feed the spirit of the blade". No idea how authentic any of this is, but it sounded cool to me lol.

It's not necessarily something associated with ronins traditionally, but rather through media later.
So, perhaps it's perfect for both that traditional samurai look along with taking advantage of the relative pop culture ronin "look."
Much like spurs and chaps in Western movies as a signal for the pop culture cowboy.

Interesting video! For the age thing, I think the creators were playing us until we find out the truth. Though his game stats say 35, i think that means age at time of death. Whatever unsents do in terms of aging after that is up for debate, but I would call him closer to 45 if not 55 by the game timeline.

Brilliant points about the father son relationship between Auron and Tidus. I kind of missed the fact that Auron basically is Tidus's father, as Jecht is kind of a few degrees too distant to fully be.
On replaying the game, I love how the dialog accurately portrays Auron's state of mind as an embittered person who would have still been alive had he not been so naive. In the dialog where he vents his long shuttered frustrations on Yuna, Rikku has to chastise him for venting his personal issues on her.
These games had great psychological insights.
