    • @huzudra

      I think it's a great idea, but 100% you need some shield around the blade so it or rocks don't go through you.

      Build a shield to keep debris from bonking you in the back of the head.
      Also some higher gears might make the blades go faster.
      More tire revolutions = more lawn mower blade madness.

    • @sachideshmane5088
      @sachideshmane5088 Před rokem +28

      Locking one axle would give you half the blade speed. Also, real brush hogs use pivoting blades on the ends of a spinning arm so things don't break when you hit a stump.

  • @jimgoodwin6440
    @jimgoodwin6440 Před rokem +333

    You may already know this but Bush Hog blades are mounted on the hub with a single bolt such that they swing freely. So if they hit something solid, they just bounce off and swing out of the way but the unit doesn't stop spinning. Then centrifugal force allows the blade to swing back out to resume cutting.

    • @ThunderHead289
      @ThunderHead289  Před rokem +114

      That was the part where I had said I already made a critical mistake and looking at a mower for 5 minutes before starting would have revealed that

      Really dangerous because the chains break and fly off. Bad day for you if it hits you.

    • @MaxGiganteum
      @MaxGiganteum Před rokem +9

      @@assassinlexx1993 You're correct, flail mowers use cables or chains with a piece of hardened steel attached to the end of them. The number varies depending on the size of the unit and available power to drive the mower. They're lethal on vegetation - especially vegetation you normally don't want to mess with such as wild blackberry patches or similar growths that are covered with thorns or spikes. They're also preferred for growth such as trimming back tree branches or brush that contains "heavy" brush or bushes that need to be completely wiped out. As for safety, all those units I've used or watched were contained in a steel shell (which effectively was a scattershield) or were all facing away from the driver when in operation. As long as you operate them as designed, they're safe.

I do advise some kinda of mesh metal shield that you mount behind the seat of the tractor. A few years ago using my 48 ford 2n and a finish mower i had the pto shaft fail and come apart and a better part of 15 lbs of steel hit me in the back of the head when it happened. Fortunately I was ok just a nice gash and a big knot on the back of my head. Now when I do anything with it i have a 2ftx2ft square mesh shield that I made out of a chunk of metal goat panel fence and on each side of it a section of chain link fence offset from the other side by half of the opening so that in the end the biggest opening is only about 1.5 in at most. Its kept a few various things from clubbing me and oh can still see through it

For perfect alignment to # 1 cylinder, you and tweak the oil pump drive rod the distributor goes into and get it to match up very very close , or perfect match up to # 1 if you get lucky.

    An open differential would probably be better when you go around corners at slower speeds the blade speed will actually speed up due to the nature of gear reduction in the spider gears

    A larger tire will make the blade turn slower so you will have to drive fast to get the blade speed you need

    The blades should create an upward draft so that grass is pulled into them, they should be slightly twisted at an angle like a fan's blades.

    Those type brush cutters used to be mounted higher with 2-4 scythe blades on them for mowing hay fields. Also, there was a chain driving the axle from the running tires on ones I've seen pictures of from the early 1900's into the 30's.

    I took an old riding mower and made blades for it out of car tire sidewalls. They were great for cutting into a thicket, that you didn’t know what was in there. They just beat it down and if you hit a stump or something, you don’t hurt anything.

  • @frasercrone3838

    As stated use the swing blade set up for grass. It is only the last few inches of any blade that actually cuts. I have seen one of these where a ride on mower cutter deck was mounted under it and it drove the deck. It had much bigger wheels and it worked really well.

    The best axle based mower I've seen had 2 blades with 4 arms each and they swiveled like brush hog blades,covering about 50 inches together, linked by 2 auto belts .There was a tray with concrete blocks for traction, and a scatter shield behind the tractor around the trailer tongue area

    Your angle iron "cutting blade" should be flipped upside down. Traditional mower blades have the trailing edge facing away from the ground and this helps create an updraft, pulling the grass up so the cutting edge shears the grass blades to a more uniform length. Fastening that flat steel stock with a sharp cutting edge will also help to cut cleaner.

They always laugh and talk trash to me and every body It’s because they are self centered only. That’s a great mower you gave come up with. Keep up good work bro.
