skip and loafer is a seinen manga series, that was animated in 2023, and it's made of a wonderful cast of students that are so precious and relatable. i specifically love and adore shima sousuke and have always wanted to make a commentary on him.

Yes. His people pleasing comes at a detriment to his relationship with Mitsumi.
At the time, he only viewed Mitsumi as a friend, liking her in that way, but when she confessed her romantic feelings for him and asked to date, he easily said ‘yes’ to her without a second thought, mostly thinking “since we’re such good friends, this could work out”. It doesn’t… Shima is not on the same wavelength as Mitsumi while they’re dating and continues to treat her as ‘just a friend’ instead of his ‘girlfriend’. He ends up (unintentionally) hurting her feelings on a few occasions, allowing his people pleasing to put his own girlfriend on the backburner, to the point of Mitsumi having to confront him about this and realize he didn’t love her (romantically). She broke up with him and happily agreed to going back to being ‘just friends’ (she still likes him as a friend and doesn’t want their brief dating to ruin that), with Shima being relieved and content with this outcome.
Now the roles have kinda reversed. Shima is becoming more aware of his people pleasing and learning to be more selfish (having self care and prioritizing his feelings). He’s is also slowly viewing Mitsumi is a different light and coming to the realization that he is attracted to her as more than a friend. It’s just a little awkward now cause of their breakup and Mitsumi having moving on from her romance with him (she is perfectly content just being friends and shows no signs of interest). It’s now up to Shima to fully come to the conclusion that he’s fallen for Mitsumi and confess to HER this time!
If they end dating again, who knows?
in one of the later chapters during the summer arc, we also find out that shima has a completely different view towards his relationships with people, warped from just how bad his people pleasing is! i could be wrong since it's been a while, but i believe it was something along the lines of how he views being friends with someone as something harder and difficult to achieve, compared to a romantic relationship. but since he's so used to always being as polite as possible when someone tries to make advances towards him, the realization of just how much mitsumi means to him comes to him so much slower, and he needs the help of others to finally put the pieces together-- that no, the person that you hold to the highest regard is usually the person you choose to date, not the person you choose to stay friends with. or at least, that's my rough interpretation of it. i loveloveloveee the animanga so much though so i'm sososo glad that people are talking about it more! the way that relationships with other people-- be it platonic or romantic or familal-- is sooo beautiful and well done!
do you know where the manga is up to now around?? I’d love to give it a read but waiting monthly for it is too agonising 😭😭
@@sumivrse The manga is currently on a two month hiatus but will be back in June. The author's town was hit by an earthquake so she is supporting the relief effort.
The anime adapted up to volume 4 (chapter 24?), and there are 60 chapters currently. I do think now is the best time to read, since Shima is currently realizing his feelings for Mitsumi.

thank you! yes it's easy to see only the good sides of a character, but i love exploring complexities of a character and skip and loafer is the perfect series to dig into for those kind of traits ☺️ all the credit to the mangaka cuz she writes so well

Good topic to discuss, more people need to address this. The reasons for people pleasing vary greatly, I know this well.

I’m glad someone appreciates the character writing in skip to loafers. There needs to have more deep dives about the anime, It’s so underrated.
Never watched this anime but I really liked this analysis. Especially since I'm struggling with people pleasing, and Ive definitely had the sentiment of "why talk about it,no one's gonna care" so this was a great video
i de----finitely recommend you read the manga, if that's your predicament! when i picked it up i was also in a really rough spot, but-- as cheesy as it is-- i really do think that watching the characters interact and grow and deal with their problems made my own problems a lot easier to digest and confront!!! either way, it's also just really enjoyable and a good read, so i highly recommend it!
I like mitsumi, but as much as she is a go getter her flaw is also that she is a go getter, it makes for an interesting character

I see the dichotomy of the characters. In reality, I’m more like Shima. I don’t have set goals, I try to please people in any way, and even not really having friends of the opposite gender who didn’t expect romance. That I aspire or admire Mitsumi’s personality. I used to be like Mitsumi, that I want to be a person with a passionate attitude and a truly kind demeanor. Maybe Mitsumi also has faults, but I want to be her SO BADLY. Awesome video! 🤍
This video got recommended to me for a reason. I’d been journaling on my phone about my own people pleasing, and only begun recognizing it a few years ago. How I became a people pleaser is pretty similar to how Shima did, and your explanation of the problems that can arise from people pleasing helped me to connect more dots. Very validating! ❤️
This is such a great analysis! I've never heard of Skip and Loafer before, but I love the character designs and especially relate to Shima as a fellow people pleaser. It's something I want to improve on too. I especially like your point about how parents grow up too-- I feel like that fact is easy to overlook, and it's interesting to consider! Finally I really loved your music choices :3 especially fire emblem was so nostalgic!

Shima looks like the perfect shojo guy but he is f*cked. Has a insecure/troubled past where he was ignored by his parents. Being kind is just a front, he doesnt really has a sense of self. Reminded me of Arima from Karekano

This is a wonderful analysis of one of my fave rare simple anime of PA works
For a little more hope than 'he has to live with it for ever'- if you look at as an attachment wound it can be healed with conscious effort and supportive relationships. It's not a permanent personality trait, it's a block, a deep pattern that was once protective and now isn't. You may need to do some deep work, to help break the old pattern and find safety within yourself, but it's possible. Often it isn't seen as urgent to break the habit till bigger life problems arising from that old pattern force a change. but if you notice it you can start to choose other ways of being...
And, anime families never seem to talk enough! let alone reconcile. But the writers do understand blocks as a thing to work through with healing connection and self compassion. Must help to have Buddhism and zen as part of the culture

Both are phenomenal! The anime stops at ch. 22 so if you want to save time you can watch the anime and start reading from there ☺️ but definitely continue the manga - all the characters have carefully handled arcs like shima does.

Yup it does! Basically the series acted as a mirror to show my own "ugly" traits which is people pleasing. Hopefully that makes sense.

It’s classified as seinen because it was published in a seinen magazine, but tbh I personally consider it shoujo 😅

@@sunamiiii Just my opinion : manga magazines are still having separated demographics like shoujo, shounen, Josei, seinen. But slowly, mangakas are pushing boundaries and readers aren't limited by target demographics of mangas anymore.
The anime works of Studio Ghibli, Mamoru Hosoda, and Makoto Shinkai are probably hard to say if they're shoujo, Shonen, josei, or seinen. The Garden of Words is even seinen.
In the end, we readers aren't bound by anything. If we enjoy, we just enjoy, no matter what others say.
