  • Hyman Roth | The Secret Behind his Ruthless Rise & Fall...| The Godfather 2 Explained
In The Godfather 2, Michael Corleone has now taken total control over the criminal underworld, Bringing his and the families net worth close to a billion dollars. He is now undoubtedly the boss of All Bosses, making him one of the most powerful men in the country.
An opportunity would soon present itself, to rid Michael from his criminal past, but by a man, with a personal vendetta against Michael, who has dedicated the last couple of years, waiting for the perfect opportunity to crush him.Without a doubt, the most cunning and Machiavellian individual in the world of the Godfather, This was is of course Hyman Roth.
Hyman Roth was the most Machiavellian and cunning opponent any Corleone don had to face. His mastery of the game of power made him a deadly opponent, on par with the likes of don Vito Corleone.
What’s interesting, is that he was Mentored by the notorious Don Vito Corleone and caporegime Peter Clemenza. Hyman Roth, was a close and early member of the Corleone mafia empire. However he would later move away from the Corleone family, and build his own empire.
But soon, Roth’s biggest enemy would be the son of his former mentor.
Even though in the end Michael came out the winner, he was scarred for life.
What's most fascinating about this character, is that he was based on a real life notorious mobster and many of the events did indeed happen in real life.
In this video, we will analyse the meteoric rise of Hyman Roth, and the reason behind his vehement hate towards Michael, and finally how it all came crashing down

Though Roth's scheme was quite excellent, he erred in these two critical areas, this cost him victory and his life. An excellent video CM.

I thought Roth was a cut above Mike. He knew that Mike knew that he had attempted the assassination on his life, but Mike makes him think Frankie tried it, but Roth knew that Mike knew it was Roth. So Roth plays it well. He sets up a deliberately botched attempt on Frankie’s life and then Frankie thinks Mike double-crossed him. Then all of a sudden Roth falls ill as soon as Fredo arrives in Cuba and Mike wants to renege on the deal, so Roth fakes being ill and having to be on life-support and knows Mike’s bodyguard will try to kill him, so Fredo tells Roth and dispatches the soldiers to have the bodyguard killed. Then Roth sets up the committee hearings. He was a downright evil bastard!

You think Frank Pentangeli, senator Gerry, Roth and others would of disrespected Vito to his face they way they did Michael? Michael was feared but also despised. When despised people will throw everything away to take you down. Roth could of retired easily to live out the golden years but his hatred of Michael spurred him on.

There may be another component to Roth's motivation. Like Vito was an obstacle to the heroin trade, Roth may have seen Michael as an obstacle to the Cuba deal. Vito and Michael had the same weakness -- their psychological conflict about being gangsters. Vito didn't want to be a dirty drug dealer and Michael naively wanted to go legitimate. In the end, Michael backed out because he predicted Castro would win, but Michael may have decided that Cuba was too dirty for his dreams anyway. Like Barzini, Roth couldn't afford a 'boss of all bosses' who had any moral qualms.
Did Roth really not see Castro coming? it's not plausible that Roth hadn't hedged his bet against the Revolution. He had probably already made a contingency deal with Castro. But now the Cuba deal meant doing business with Communists. Michael's presidential dreams would not allow for that.
In the birthday cake scene, Roth feeds Michael some b.s about the rebels. It is not possible that Roth didn't investigate the Revolution and knew it had a chance. There was a chance the deal would go forward under the Communists, but he couldn't tell that to Michael. Right after, Roth pokes around Michael's presidential aspirations, either for himself or for his son.
Ironically, the next President would be the son of a bootlegging Nazi lover who Roth no doubt knew personally. Roth knew the higher you go, the dirtier it gets. But Michael took his naivete about 'legitimacy' to his grave. As ruthless as Michael was, Roth perceived a limit to how low Michael would go. Getting in bed with the CIA or with Castro? The CIA was 100 times dirtier than Solozzo -- and deeper into drugs! Roth had no choice but to take out the Corleone 'GoodyTwo-Shoes.'

Was this character choice in the novel, or was it added by FFC or a Lee Strasberg. After all, he founded the famous acting school back in 1931, that most of the really big stars came out of.

After Prohibition ended, you state in the video that Roth just left the Corleone organization and went on his own. Really? Why? How? Doing What? You jump from that, roughly 1933, to Moe Green and Las Vegas, circa 1947. That's a 14 year gap. It seems to me that 14 year gap IS the real rise of Roth, and you simply blow through it like it's meaningless. Maybe you should do a video about Roth, and what he was involved in, from the end of Prohibition until the start of Las Vegas, so we really get how he became so huge. You just tell us that he went from being a mechanic/driver for Vito, into a big player that was largely responsible for Vegas. Huh?

The point of Roth being more powerful than Micheal never seemed right to me since I knew he started as a lackey for his father, but I can see how he could outstrip him by continuing to grow his criminal empire while Micheal struggled to shut it down and become legit.

I think Roth was waiting for Michael to put in his side of the money 💵. Since Greene got killed his share had to be replaced. So Roth thought let Michael put in the share and the take him out. But that gave time for Michael to figure it out and make his counter move ♟️.

I have a question, how could Hymen Roth be the prodigy of Vito and still didn't make it to the godfather's funeral? I still don't understand how or why.

    • @cha5
      @cha5 Před rokem +3

Roth didn’t want to attract attention to himself so he sent Johnny Ola to the funeral in his place and Ola was just one of the many mourners there?
Or maybe Roth was convinced the family was on it’s last legs and he had heard about the way Michael had treated Moe Green and he thought that little punk would be dead by the end of the week at Barzini’s hands so why even bother going to NYC for the funeral of his father?
Or just maybe it’s the same reason we never saw Frankie at the funeral, there were after all several hundred mourners there and both Frankie and Roth could have just been lost in the crowd there.
