How Don Vito Corleone CRUSHED his Biggest Enemy? | Law 3: Conceal Your Intentions...

  • How did "The Godfather" Vito Corleone, surrender to his enemy, yet manage to not ONLY survive but come out on top as the one Victorious? What was the Secret that allowed Don Vito to outplay his most powerful enemy?
In the Godfather, Don Vito Corleone climbed his way to the top of the criminal underworld, But it came with a hefty price, being at the top made him a target, so He had some extremely powerful enemies. It was only a matter of time until they would try to dethrone him, and crush his empire once and for all. And sure enough that's exactly what happened.
While Don Vito was still recovering, the heir to the Corleone empire was taken out, his enemies were closing in. The end was very near, everything he built, all the years of sacrifice and hard work was about to come crashing down. Drastic measures had to be taken and fast.
The don knew this very well, but put his emotions aside and looked at his position strategically, and so utilized Law 3 of the 48 laws of power.
The law states: “Keep people off-balance and in the dark by never revealing the purpose behind your actions. If they have no clue what you are up to, they cannot prepare a defense. Guide them far enough down the wrong path, envelop them in enough smoke, and by the time they realize your intentions, it will be too late.”
Look, it's no secret that the top players of the game of power abide by a set of very different rules. Whether it's in the world of the “Godfather'' or in real life, the rules of the game are the same. So the better you understand the game, the better chance you have to win.
This is one of the most important laws of power, So listen closely as this is something you definitely need to know....

I viewed pitching baseball somewhat like this. You don't reveal your pitching strategy to your opponents. If you pitch to opponents in pre-season games, don't reveal what you've got. Don't show your best pitches until the last inning or two, or even until the championship game. Make sure you've got the umpire figured out so he doesn't ruin you. Walk your strongest opponent, but make it look like just bad luck! Don't show opponents your pick-off move, send them fake ones at first! And so on! Hell, even fool your own coaches so they don't try to force their idea of a strategy on you.

Don Vito was the best. He literally stopped and made the selfless decision to END the war right after learning of his eldest son and male heir's assassination. He knew that more bloodshed would benefit no one and that even upon finding out Barzini and the others backed the heroin trade, his personal need for revenge was a selfish need.
Vito knew he always did his best and he also does put his real family ahead of his mob family (even when the 2 clashed). Vito died content, retired, safe and optimistic for the future of the Corleones, while sharing a happy silly moment with his beloved grandson.

Barzini broke this rule and revealed his intentions with a single word... "Must."
At the meeting he should have said, "Vito, why don't you share your connections?" and waited for a response. Instead he said "Don Vito MUST share his connections!"
Saying "he MUST" means there was already discussions about this. It was decided. Vito now knew who set him up and why. Not being willing to negotiate is a potential death sentence in that life. (see Moe Green. Michael didn't ever want to buy him out. He just wanted to make a weak looking offer so that when he wouldn't negotiate, he had a reason to kill him and seize it anyway)

Also when Barzini's men started to take over Tessio's territory step by step, Michael ordered not to retaliate. A perfect smoke screen was created and even Barzini, the smartest of the snakes, failed to see through it.

They thought Michael was a ‘Good kid’ and wasn’t experienced enough to challenge the other four families.
The way they saw it Michael wasn’t bought up in the life. He was bought up protected from the life, a civilian and he killed Mclusky and Solozzo through the orders of Sonny. And as they was chipping away at the territories they was being ran out of NYC. They saw Vito dying as an opportunity to take advantaged if an un proven young Don and take the scraps of the Corleone family empire once Michael was lured to his death.
Obviously we know what happened after. I don’t even think Bartzini expected how cunning Michael really was through Vito’s planning.

Barzini was still playing by the rules he knew, that Michael was a civilian and neutral effectively. The corleones would want to protect him, and if he's neutral he's jot fair game. Barzini didn't expect them to flip the script and play by different rules as it puts Michael in danger. You can still see he's wary by how he has Michael frisked, but he still trusts his judgment of the situation and probably is a bit overconfident, the same quality causing him to reveal more of his hand than he should at the meeting with the other families.

The godfather perfectly demonstrates something that’s very important in gangster movies: Criminal Empires are built on a foundation of sand, and it’s constantly in danger of collapsing.
The reason characters like Vito Corleone are so smart and such good manipulators is because they are constantly working, learning, and patching, hoping their empire of sand holds together for one more day.
As well as the fact that very few gangsters die in their own beds, they either die in a jail cot or in a pool of their blood.
Tony Montana in Scarface is another very good example of this.

A true gangster know not to live in war all the time. Sometimes to move the way of a gangster look to the family and see what you can fix and uplift to make them stronger. If you can only do 1 or the other and or none of them both then see what you can fix within yourself. A true gangster makes sure his family is “alright” not “better”. Let his real family or gang family better themselves or destroy themselves without getting involved unless you have too. That is why the people in the mob or in the cartel ask in a round about way. “Are you sure you want to join”?

So many quotes to live by in this movie, a real lesson for young men especially. Never tell anyone outside the family what you're thinking again. A man that doesn't spend time with his family can never be a real man. It's not personal, it's strictly business.

I love The Godfather movies, I watched many many times and will watch them again and again many many times, I also have the novel : in hard copy and soft copy and read them both!!!! I love how everyone writes about the characters in those movies and then analyise the characters etc.... even up to now, after 50 years.... but no one up to now, ever stopped to think and state that these are just fictitious characters, it is the author who is the mastermind who created the characters and the events and the story line, it is Mario Puzo who is the genius and the mastermind!!!!

Bravo, Kurdish V1nce. You tube made me the same offer. I couldn't refuse. I didn't want to! These are great videos that unveil all the complexities and intrigues of the greatest novel and movie of all time. Vito Corleone suffered his misfortunes but learned from every one of them. By creating the meeting in effect he played the other Don's like a banjo. There is no greater power than perceived weakness. Barzini and Tattaglia flush with false pride that they had conquered the mighty Godfather, Vito Corleone. That is what he wanted them to feel! He uncovered the thoughts and motives of Tattaglia and Barzini. Smarter than all the other Don's, Vito and Michael outmaneuvered all the heads of the five families. Vito instructed Michael and Tom Hagen in every aspect of the conspiracy involving Barzini and Tattaglia. No aggressive acts by the Corleones. Slyly allowing them to whittle their empire into near non existence. Then annihilating their enemies in one crushing counter strike. Barzini and Tattaglis were mere sheep in a sea of hidden sharks. Great video.

He basically said his plan at the meeting, but with such ego no one saw it. He promised he was done with the war, but he wanted his son next to him and if anything happened to him I have a plan in place to take you out if I need to. He knew he would never get his full power back but he also knew when something did happen to him there would be a vacuum.

People Need to rewatch The godfather because Vito Lost and the movie never show his war victories in the first one. It was about Michael. Pay attention Vito started a war by sending Luca Brasi after saying no to the deal. (by doing so he is saying you are not my friend. In their world.) Sending Luca Brasi was an act of war which they know. Which is way he got hit up for saying "no, you're not my friend" and treating the man like a foe. If he would have said no and left it at that
Maybe they would have just tried to continue to convince him instead he sent his most loyal hitman that started it all. First luca,Vito, and Sonny after losing the war.(He Copped ✌)He called a truce for Michael. Putting Michael in charge, Leaving him a target by his enemies, closest friends, and shame of losing a war. Which lead to moe green disrespecting him. Which is why Michael had to kill everyone. The acts of his father almost lead to the destruction of the whole family.
