    ABOUT ME
I’m Fern! A 20-something gal living on beautiful Vancouver Island, Canada with my partner and two dogs. I like to create content on social media part time and also work as a Registered Nurse. I am interested in health and wellness - nutrition, holistic living, and exercise. I have been vegan for over 4 years and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. I have over 100 houseplants and love to share about them :) For those into astrology, I am a gemini sun, scorpio moon, & libra rising. I started out on social media with a focus on makeup/beauty/fashion and am not into it as much, but I do share on those topics from time to time. Thanks for stopping by!

Well, not quite but this is what mostly internet say about Spider Mites.
Spider mites thrive in warm, dry conditions and can become a major problem during the winter, when your dry house becomes the perfect breeding ground for them. If you see small bugs crawling around in your houseplant soil rather than on the leaves, then you might have fungus gnats instead of spider mites.
The most rapid growth of spider mites is in hot, dry environments. While they do thrive in humid conditions, they seem to have more egg fertility in dry conditions, and they are commonly known to be problematic in dusty environments as well

Great video and tips!! I bubble wrapped my Southeast-facing window in my room to block the cold in the Winter. And I noticed that like a sheer curtain, it allows in nice direct/indirect morning light onto my plants without it getting hot enough to burn the leaves.
OMYGOD and that explains why I've been fighting spider mites🤦‍♀️🕷️on my Red Maranta being that it's in my indoor greenhouse and it's constantly humid!! I moved it toy Southeast-facing window, using insecticidal soap and it's helped so far and I must it about 1-2 times a day and no spider mites!!🥰

This is awesome. I was saying "YES" out loud when you said that Ficus elastica 'Tineke' LOVE BRIGHT LIGHT AND WATER.
My Tineke was doing nothing when I had it far away from the East window. Then I moved it right next to the window, it gave me a few new leaves very fast. It looks much happier there.
    Thanks for the video.

I should have done this before I lost it last week! I just murdured my tineke. First it was few feet away from west facing window, then I moved it next to the west facing window. Got droopy, moved it back away again. Now it's dead! 😅 straight to the bin it went.

My house is definitely good in summer but horrible in winter in terms of lightning. During the summer all my windows get decent light (they’re all east-faced) but they’re small, so in tbe winter with less hours of light and lots of cloudy/rainy days I’ll surely need a grow light for all my plants. Pothos and spiderplant miraculously survived this winter but cacti were seriously damaged.

I love this idea for a video! It helps give us ideas if we are having a hard time finding that sweet spot for a plant. Off subject, I was thinking about the leaf trouble you were having with your philodendron melanochrysum. I was searching for videos about the benefits of calcium in plants because I saved some egg shells, smashed them up and put them in a jar with water to make a calcium drink for my plants. Anyway one benefit was leaf production! So maybe make a little batch and give it a try. Either way It couldn't hurt. xoxo👩‍🌾🤞💚

Oh man, I was so bummed that my only useable windows are east and west facing as a new plant enthusiast. I thought I was torturing my favorite plants by keeping them in the east-facing room (it MIGHT be slightly southeastern facing). My east-facing windows killed my palmas (burned). It interestingly has not burned my Monstera Deliciosa. Perhaps it wasn't a burn but it mimicked a burn. Your video made me feel so much better about my lighting situation, as you like both east and west-facing windows. Thanks so much!

I only have north facing window and many of my plants did super well with help of grow lights, and the plants had to be up to the window to do anything lol I would say plants that are labeled as “low light” is true...but in the end most if not all will thrive in bright indirect light. Many times I had ugly deform leaves pop up because of north facing light with no grow light 😔 and to my knowledge spider mites have better chance of appearing in dry atmosphere.

THANK YOU! this was mega helpful. ive had a hard time figuring out what kind of light situation i have in my flat, and this will definatly spare me from some trial and error. im still a bit in doubt about my livingroom tho its west facing and the whole back wall is one huge window, but its facing my balcony that has a roof, so it is kindof sheltered and i feel like i barely get any sun in the back of my livingroom so im scared to put too many plants in the "dark" corner, but i have a feeling i get more light in there than i originally thought.

I only have the two windows and don’t want to keep them outside and risk TOO much direct sunlight in such high temperatures. Any advice there would be appreciated 😅

Almost all of my cacti/succulents are right in a south facing window getting tons of sun, or on the deck in the sun. They love it and I haven't had any problems with burn. To be safe you could try them out in a shady spot just to acclimatize them!

How have you been treating your spider mites? I've had really good luck using Heart Shaped Leaves' method! It's tedious but so far it seems like you only have to do it once or twice.
I have basically all of my plants in my living room where I have a massive floor to ceiling east facing window. So far so good for most of them, even the bird of paradise!

Ah that's so awesome! I'm jealous of massive windows. And yes I have used the Heart Shaped Leaves method as well! I usually do some variation of that :)

HOW do you keep your dogs from knocking over all those pots on the floor? mine are so clumsy and rowdy theyre always slamming into walls and furniture trying to play and zoom around. they havent tried eating or digging any up yet i think theyd just bowl it over if it was on the floor or flimsy shelf even

I guess I am pretty lucky with my dogs because they have never bumped or damaged my plants. BUT when other peoples dogs come over it's a different story 😅
