I’m Fern! A 20-something gal living on beautiful Vancouver Island, Canada with my partner and two dogs. I like to create content on social media part time and also work as a Registered Nurse. Finally someone who just uses regular tap water on their plants! So many ppl on youtube make a big fuss about using rainwater or getting filtered water and letting it sit for a few days... like that's just so inconvenient lmao. Loved this video, it helped me a lot:)
I use tap water too, but I boil it first 😷 it's a lot of extra work, but it's worth it, and my plants ☘️ love it ❤😊

My heart dropped watching you water marantas with tap water..... them I remembered..... You are in Canada. No clue what the water is like there. Chemical free it would seem . Gorgeous prayer plants!
I don't have a faucet or shower with a hose either. I don't even have a bathtub (....I can't wait to renovate).
But I have on occasion ran my outside hose I'm through the window above my sink. Just make sure you have a nozzle you can control the water with.
My neighbor thought I was nuts, but I had to leave on a holiday and it sped things up.

Do you do anything to prevent pests on your houseplants other than finding them?? I know some people use mosquito bits but I’m not sure if there’s something you recommend

I believe I do the same thing, but I use different fertilizer.😊 I am going to be ordering the orchid mist fertilizer spray for my hoyas, I’m also going to try it on my vanilla orchid.🥰

Thank you for the lovely video :) when you were speaking of the string of hearts and how it's very vocal when it needs water, mine has wrinkly leaves on the top but the rest of the leaves look healthy. Am I under watering it? I usually give it water once a week when the leaves look extra wrinkly.
I go by the "mature" leaves on the top. If they are hard the plant shouldn't need water.

Hi Fern, I recently bought a little wild looking Rhaphidophora Tetrasperma. His newer leaves are smaller (he wasn't getting enough light is my guess). I was wondering if you think I should leave him to grow, or cut and propagate the newer leaves? Thanks! Sending smiles, Jordan.
Give him a stake/pole to climb up and he will produce bigger leaves :)

It’s funny. I did the same thing with watering videos... I have too many to update so ended up doing updates while watering. Water costs so I drain the water into a tub and use it again...besides the fact that it might spread something. Anyway, about the faucet... we were living in apartment with no fancy faucet so I can totally understand. I was using a plastic/rubber product for kids which you can lead the water to different direction so kids can reach out...
Great idea to reuse the water. Also would save on fertilizer/nutrients. And yes haha I quickly realized it was not going to be possible to show more than one room lol.

where did you get the sweater?
it may be a little harder for your kitchen sink but even if your renting exchanging faucets heads is common and pretty easy. the shower is usually a screw-on even.
I've definitely thought about it, especially for the shower..
Switching the shower to a removable sprayer was super easy. Didn't even need tools. Bough a cheap $25-30 on Amazon and installed it in minutes. Game changer! Ya sink.... not so easy

How often do you fertilize? Maybe you could do a video about that? 💚
I fertilize lightly with every water in the growing season, or in the winter if my plants are actively growing :) basically if you see new growth it is safe to do so!

I’m leaving for a couple “trips” soon, meaning I’ll have to leave my plants to fend for themselves for a couple days. Not sure how it’ll go.
I hope they'll be okay!! Last time I went on vacation I asked my grandmas to water my plants and they overwatered one and it almost died but thankfully it's putting out lots of new growth! Maybe you can do a DIY self watering system for your plants??
I just got back from a week long vacation and all my plants were perfectly fine when I checked on them so if you’re only going to be gone for a couple days they should be okay!

Nope
One of my snake plants has a wrinkled leaf from when it got thirsty a (long) while back, but since then the wrinkle has never fixed itself lol maybe they stay like that? It's still firm and healthy!

No! I've only ever used tap water :)
How do you clean your terracotta pots? Only with water? My pots look awful.. i wonder if they quality is bad or maybe i have awful water...
I usually scrub them with some dish soap :) or soak them in very diluted bleach if there was a pest.
I’ve noticed my whale fin is also wrinkly even if it’s just been watered! I wasn’t sure if that was normal or not
How often do you water it? You’re probably watering too much they only need to be watered every month or month and a half
Issybellala i water it every time I remember.. so around 4-5 weeks 🤔 they’ve shot up pups too! But some are a little wrinkly so I thought that’s how they were supposed to be. Maybe I am watering too often ☹️ thank you for the advice!
Mirella Orozco oh wow, you should definitely start watering a little more 😂I think you’re under watering. Snake plants like succulents wrinkle when they need water.
I water mine about once a month and mine is always wrinkly too, but it's never soft. The wrinkles feel like the growth, so I figure it's ok

what soil do you use for your moisture loving plants , the soil i am using inset the best for moisture loving plants and it seems like whatever your using is great
also where do you get most of your plants, mostly your pitcher plant i think that pitcher plants are such cool plants but i dont know where to get one at
I will either just use regular potting mix and add a small amount of perlite (enough so that is still drains but not too quickly!) OR if I want to get fancy I will mix coco coir, perlite, orchid bark, and charcoal. I don't want it to be super dense, I'd rather have to water it more often than have water sitting for too long.
I tend to find a lot of them on Facebook or from plant friends. I like to buy from North Shore Tropicals and Crystal Star Nursery too though :) and local shops in my area!

If you buy new plants, do you look up if they are toxic for dogs or not? I'm gonna be living with someone that has a cat and I don't know if I should throw all my toxic plants away or not.
I don't because I know my dogs have never messed with my plants. I know cats can be a lot trickier though haha.

Why do you choose not to bottom water?
I do sometimes bottom water :) just depends on the plant. I find it’s trickier to bottom water in terracotta, just doesn’t work as well for me.
whenever people balance stuff on tht little intersection between the two sinks i get so bloody nervous it’s gonna fall off 🤡🤡🤡

Regular bugs (like spiders n stuff from outside) - no. Houseplant pest bugs - yes. Pests are usually tiny enough that you don’t know they’re there unless you are looking though.
