Audio-Technica AT4040 Condenser Mic Review / Test
Vložit
- čas přidán 15. 08. 2024
- Today I review the Audio-Technica AT4040, a large diaphragm XLR condenser mic. This thing has a relatively neutral frequency response up through 2kHz where you start to see contouring leading to a boosted presence and air boost with a cut around 9kHz. Overall this thing has a pronounced proximity effect, but at a 3-6 inches you’ll find a smooth frequency response with nice boosted high frequencies without any stand out harsh frequencies except for the occasional sibilance.

here's a fun story: i was about to go buy a new mic because I thought my at4040 was broken. then i saw the part of the video where you spoke into the mic from all directions and realised that my mic was backwards. been that way for almost 2 years. amazing.
hahaha made my day, thanks dude
😂😂😂
LMAO xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
Quit lying lol
More common than you know.
"I'm becoming more of a thick boy because I like pizza so much"
LOL xD

Bruh... this is EXACTLY how all mic reviews should be done. Thank u bro.. coppn' a 4040 soon based on this review.
you won't be disappointed, man, it's a really nice microphone, balanced tone, and a really nice noise floor, you have to really crank the gain to get any sort of hiss, you can get loud clear vocals or recordings without the hiss of cheaper mics
Have you got it yet just got mine... now need a apollo twin 2 dou :(
your review simply useful and educate,I dont even want to buy mic or interface right now,but here I am,Thanks man
This was second mic 🎤 purchase after making my debut in voiceover work and graduating from an entry level MXL2001. Never regretted making the investment, it has served me well over the years. The elastic bands on my shockmount need replacing now and the grill is slightly weathered, but the sound is still as rich and true as the day it was purchased! All hail the AT4040.....$300 well spent! 🏆
bro the little songs you do in these reviews are funny as hell
Appreciate ya.
I use the AT 4040 and it is an excellent mic. I have had the Rode NT-K from back in 2000 that cost around $1000.00 but the AT 4040 seems a much better mic to work with for me.
It's nice and robust sounding yet smooth, love it.
The microphone has a phenomenal tone to it at the expense of a very forgiving polar pattern and high sensitivity. Not suitable for gamers and let's players imo unless they have extensive acoustic treatment in their rooms.
As always, great review Bandrew!
Kyil I know plenty of Twitch streamers/gamers that use the AT4040, and all sound great... Including myself. ;)
Bliss I have an AT2020 atm that I use to stream but it’s dying on me. Would you recommend the AT4040?
CommanderPandaArmy Absolutely if you can afford it! If you're in the US check out the website zzounds.com. They offer no credit check interest free payments.
CommanderPandaArmy Unless you have a lot of money to spare don't you think it's a bit of an overkill to have a studio standard microphone for streaming?
I'm no professional, but don't you think the Rode nt1/nt1a will suit you just fine?
Kyil Kyil I’m Canadian so the difference in price from the NT1 and the AT4040 is less than $100. So what I’m trying to figure out is if it’s worth it to spend the extra bit of cash on the AT4040 or if it would be more worth it to go with NT1 or even the AT2035. I’ve seen a lot of streamers using the AT4040 but they don’t review their gear so idk how they feel about it. And as far as it being overkill goes, I’ve seen a tone of streamers use the Shure SM7B which is significantly more expensive than the AT4040. So I don’t personally think the AT4040 is overkill but I’m trying to get a better understanding and find out from people that have used it.
Woah...that's a lot of information in your close. Great review as always! Thanks!
2:50 the camera shake while banging on those cherry mx blues really completed it
I just discovered your reviews as I look to upgrade my home studio mic. Extremely helpful and the format of your reviews are so good. You are one of my favorites now and I like pizza too much too.
omg you actually took my pop filter request!
In Texas, we call it a _Coke_ filter
Even though we're actually using it to filter Dr. Pepper
Great review as always! Would love to see a comparison of this vs Rode NT-1 though.
I second this!!!!
I think the at4040 is just a lot better in general
Owned one for 8yrs its brilliant and punches way above its weight
@fu J rode sounds ass bro🤣
This is the best mic for your voice out of everything you tested in my opinion
Same!
Would love to see a comparison with the AT2035 and see just how much better or not the AT4040 is and whether the difference in price is actually gd value to consider upgrading :)
300 dollars and no stickers!!!
I am definitely not buying that
hahaha!!!
😂😂😂😂😂 wtf
Love your reviews! May just be me, but I find it easier to identify the characteristics of a mic when compared to another mic throughout the video.
Great review. I wish I could talk as fast as this guy and still sound coherent.
I bought the MPM-1000u after your review (absolutely amazing mic) and stayed subbed because I just kinda like learning and hearing you.
Can you do a AT4040 vs the Neumann TLM 102?
let me break it down to you as i own both get the tlm 102 but if your budget won't allow it at4040 is a great microphone but not as rich as tlm 102 but still fantastic microphone
@@slickhatter9812 I would not agree here...Have the tlm102 and the tlm103 and must say the at4040 sounds much better and clearer than the tlm102 and almost identical to the tlm103. this mike is a bargan and in a blind test u will not be able to hear a difference between this and the tlm103.
@@faithhopelove6945 on my monitors i can hear a difference however your mileage may vary; same argument could be made between tlm103 and U87ai i could hear a difference regardless all are great microphones hopefully it will suit the application or the talent i sound a lot better on u87 and 102 than 103 and mkh416 so i would say whoever is testing microphone better understand your voice and the frequency response of the microphone and pick accordingly: My signal chain is U87->v402 preamp -> apollo twin x->kh80 monitors and i can hear a difference but i would pick 4040 without hesitation if i don’t have other options as i said it is a great microphone however 4040 vs 103 they share the same 5k pump hence the clarity and harshness but 103 low end is way better than 4040 but I’m sorry they don’t sound the same at all 103 is better and more body and the 102 share the same body but not clarity of the 103. In a blind test I wouldn’t be able to tell you which microphone is which but i would for sure know which is better so put them side by side on good monitors and listen to them again critically.
That seems like a pretty nice microphone. It's nice and clear without being too sibilant, and it's made in Japan which is good.
Exactly. I've owed a few and that's how I would describe it.
I own one myself, and I absolutely love it!!
I'm thinking about possibly upgrading to the 4047, but I can't find a good review for that microphone for some reason. Can you possibly do a review/test for the 4047 please? :)
I already have this mic, but I thought I’d watch your review anyway, for the entertainment. Great review as always! And I agree with your observations!
Is it better than the at2035?
@@liljgifted Can’t say since I don’t have the 2035, but I’ve been very happy with my 4040!
Dope I bought the AT2035 because of you. The wait for it to get here has been gruesome.
which one is better? at4040 or Rode NT2a?
Great review! Thorough, technical, practical and pizza! Thank you!
AT4040 or Blue BabyBottle SL
Hi. Would you mind to make a versus review of at4040 and similar mics in that price category?
I'd love to see a comparison with the NT-1 RODE :)
At4040 is much Better
I just bought it in Japan:) Thanks for the review!
Fantastic mic. I recorded my harmony course with this mic for the vocals, and the Shure SM81 for the guitar. (I actually used the AT4040 on the guitar for some of the lessons)

You are the nicest guy in the world of CZcamsrs. Honestly...
I really think that there should be a re review video for this microphone as this microphone is such a versatile microphone and when thrown in with some other microphones in that price range is a great option for voiceovers and vocals, don’t think this guy is for usual podcasters except when they are freaks, lol but yeah its absolutely workable
Hats off for your dedication!
I have owned 3 of these never had any trouble with any of them. I also owned a few 4047s. Actually I've never had any problems with any Audio Technica mic.
Easy to assemble, good strong materials, feels good, looks good.
I really enjoy your work, have a great day
Im wondering if i should buy a used one for $200aud. Guy has had it for 10 years, should i do it?
Which one which you pick between the AT4040 and Rode NT1 for voice over? Please don't give any details out. Thank you very much for a great video!
I love watching these microphone reviews of you even at2020 I can't afford hahaha.
you are making some really useful vids, thanks man
i don't know why but but the microphone that I like the most as I heared throughout your videos is the Samson C01u
maybe is because i only heared them with my HyperX Cloud 2 , but damn i like how it punch without a pop filter x'D, its wierd.
Never have I ever heard acoustic guitar sound this nice in your videos.
Can't wait for daily mic uploads
for us, most accurate to original music, entry level mics are,
at 4040, mk4, at 2035, p420, and also re320,
and R1 MKII Ribbon,,,,we record live, small group, small orchestra, etc
classic, choir, jazz, swing, blues, vocals, balads,etc..,,,
we use mics of all types to record direct to, and mixdown
within tascam dp 24sd, etc...
as insurance against 48v, better to get Triton Audio
Phantom Block
in musica, always,,
Review its big sister, the multi-pattern (i.e., cardioid, figure-of-eight, omni) AT4050. I think you'll like it.
Thank u so much for your informative and valuable videos, i have only one confusing question, i own at4040 connected to focusrite 2i2 1gen and my room is well treated, when singing the low and the low mid are so much high to the point its difficult to correct it without loosing so much quality, i tried everything standing 6 8 10" even 1 feet from the mic it still picks the low and the mid low at a very high level, what can i do?
the more mic reviews i watch from you the more they are all pointing to a shure sm7b for my application...that makes me a sad boi because, im a broke boi. All jokes aside is there anything you recommend from the sm7b and cheaper that delivers that broadcast like sound because right now i record and stream gameplay in a small room and all i hear is chair squeaking and computer fans...all from an at2020 @ 75% gain from a behring xenyx 502...im also going to be picking up a dbx 286s as well
You are so awesome!! Love your reviews! They are so informative and fun! I would love to see a review on the Shure Beta 58A soon!
It is on the voting poll already. Give it a vote.
Podcastage oh thanks makn
Would love to hear your review of the Audio Tecnica BP40. I loved Travis's review and would love to see how it does in your test scenarios! Love this video as allways and nice to know the three main guys ( You @Podcastage, Travis @Podcastmic and Mike @booth junkie) I go to for my audiophile fix are friends/colleagues! Keep up the good work! Also quick note I'm living my At2035 that I got for Christmas as an upgrade to my nw700.
That is a HUGE upgrade from the NW700! Hope you're enjoying it so far. And I have had the BP40 on my list for months, just haven't purchased it yet. One day I will for sure.
If you like this mic trio, you should check Lo Knows. He's amazing and more versatile than these three.
I would love a dynamic, I do have a heap karaoke one and a zoom zeta 580 I am going to attempt to do a comparison vid at some point
As an ode to you guys I'm justbtryimg to figure out whether to just record my audio with audacity or get OBS to record to separate tracks and mix it that way. Would love a proper dynamic mic at so.e point although not sure it would suit my streams as I move about to much and you know what dynamics are like as you move away. Mind you I'd have to win the loto right now to justify spending £400 on a mic😂.
It really was really good on the acoustic guitar and seems like a pretty good overall package. What is the pizza topping that you are addicted to?
Man I just discovered the thin crust Spinach / Onion / Feta cheese, and my god is it great...and I don't feel like a complete monster after eating it.
Yeah that sound like ninja turtle crack, I'd be down for one for sure. I have one like it at my local but with lamb as well......
*To die for*
Damn it. It's morning and now I want pizza again!
Podcastage Hey not my fault, I told the guy....
How long till the Pizza shop opens?
+Humbug Show Re Addictive Pizza- *CzDannyBoy Pizza's are laced with Cocaine!!*
Police-Sgt Luger -- *They are? Well, No wonder I couldn't eat just one!!*
Really nice video. I wasn't shopping for a mic, just clicked the video.
I now want this mic!
THICC
please do an at2035 vs at4040 , because i found out they are quite similar in terms of specs
"I'm becoming more of a thicc boi because I love eating pizza so much"
Honestly same here
had to leave a like for this "I am becoming more of a thic boy, because I love pizza so much" 3:20
Good review! Would you rather this mic than the se 2200 ? For music home studio general purpose
Thanks for another great video! Would you ever consider reviewing binaural/ stereo microphones? Is it cheating if you review 2 mic's even if they're the same?
I love this mic! To get rid of the boominess, do a narrow cut at 160Hz.
Great suggestion. Thank you very much for the comment. Have a wonderful day.
It does a lot of help. I had a plan to buy a nice mic.
How about the AT BP40 Mic. Has a nice look to it and I think it is new to the rest of the mics that are out. Good job on the mic reviews.
Hello!, do you think this microphone could reccord a bass amp? Thanks, and greatings!
Really great video, thanks man !
I juste wondered if there is any cable in the box or if we have to buy it seperately from the mic
What mic do you prefer or like better because of the sound, the at4040 or the nt1? Good vid btw.
TASCAM US-800 Review? I saw a video of you doing audio interfaces, and I saw this one at relatively cheap. I really don't know how old it is, but I've seen other reviews and liked it.
You should upload the audio from these videos to soundcloud so we can hear them in higher quality
Soundcloud actually lowered their bitrate to 64 Kbps Opus From 128 kbps mp3
The real test is in how well this mic will hold up in the harsh conditions if used in a special forest. Can it handle the low frequencies of say a body falling from the trees? Can this mic handle the highs of highs, the sudden screams that no man should hear that comes from the loneliness of all places? Is this mic strong enough when attach to an XLR cable to hold the same weight as the person who wants to use it to create their final audio sound? I'm glad you do the distance tests. This really help to know how far to place the mic away from the chair before it taken away. I mean before people had to just guess. I am worried about how the audio will echo in these special woods. Maybe you could give tips on that. A lav mic would be hard to setup in this scenario you know.
Just use a shotgun mic. Because then you can protect yourself with it.
Podcastage My comment was not as witty as normal because I had just woken up. You would also have to be up to date on your current events to fully understand it. I know my comments on other channels to this event has "killed"... get it?....oops too soon. I'd do better next time. I'll keep my wittyness to the same level as your podcast. No wait...I'd be asleep then. Just kidding. I should start sending in questions to your podcast but you seen pretty booked with that one. If this had been Yahoo messenger you'd be hit with a virtual snowball to the face right about now.
Nice mic, but it picked up more keyboard clicking than both the 2020 and 2035.
Good review. Thanks.
Is there any real reason to get AT4040 if you already own an AT2020?
can you please review the mics with the windscreen on? I hear that mics sound a bit different with them on
I think I might like the sound of the NT1 more, I dont know xc
If you get one you should review the AT4050.
really
You're the man Bandrew. 👍
Should i buy at2035 or at4040 ?
I’ve researched both and I’d prefer the higher quality of the 4040.
@@astralaudio101 I mean we gotta trust u ur pfp is the rode mic
How could You compare this to RODE NT1? I'm going to buy myself some treat and I ended up here with this two. I would like to record both vocals and some.. well djembe for example because why not! seems like AT4040 have flatter eq, but is this worth alone to select this one? Thanks in regards! Good video as always!
I like the UFO poster. Audio Technica AT4040. I like the look.
thanks man! I've been using a AT2020 for a short while and I'm not wildly happy with it, this 4040 sounds very appealing..... I have a question; also for anyone with an answer... I am using a Kaotic eyeball to help out with wondering noises (along with sound reflection wall tiles ect), when microphones get into the high quality prices, would my kaotic eyeball still be a necessary piece of equipment?, by that I mean, is there any reason to suspect I might lose sound quality in some area?.... anyone think the kaotic eyeball is a terrible idea in general? lol peace!
Nice video man very helpful!
I wonder what level do you use on windows? That thing messes my sound up if I have it high, mic starts to pick every little sound there is my room.
Patriota aqui? :v
employ a noise gate
Not sure if anyone gives a shit but if you are bored like me during the covid times you can watch pretty much all of the new series on InstaFlixxer. Have been binge watching with my brother for the last few months xD
@Jagger Nolan Definitely, have been watching on InstaFlixxer for years myself :D
Did u use the -10 Db on the back? and what does that does I’ve never used it
great reviews Thanks
would you say the Neumann TLM 102 is better for vocals.
One of the best mics you've reviewed so far. Too bad I'm broke.
Wow it sounds so good
Sounds amazing.
I was thinking about getting one of these (used though) but I opted for the 3U Audio Black CM1 instead because I know U87 style mics work well on my voice. I do think the AT4040 sounds nice, but I think it picks up sibilance a bit too much (like you said). You could really hear those breaths you took clearly and it picks up that hissing s sound pretty clearly. Obviously these aren't a big issue because you can edit out breaths and use a de-esser. Other than that problem it's a very nice microphone.
riend I want to start my home studio to make trap and things for the study that microphone recommend me?
Good Review. Looking for a new mic. Im considering this one.
You are the best! Good luck 😉
dude, i insist youl should review audio monitors too, at least the cheapest ones (behringer ms40, mackie cr4, presonous 4.5) is an essential item of a home studio.
Thanx for your rewiews, always funny and accurate..
it's really a good sounding mic
I’m upgrading from using a shure sm58 to record vocals thanks!
Nice review
can’t decide between this one and the aston origin
Can we hear an AT2035 compared to the AT4040? I want to hear what the difference between the entry level to the mid tier level is.
Somehow the price of this mic is much higher in EU than in USA compared to Rode. 400€ for a 4040 vs 260€ for a rode NT1, 180€ a Rode NT1-A.
bouta cop ! thanks
Thanks for the review, bye!
Bandrew, could you do a review of Sennheiser MK4 and compare it to AT4040 please? :) thank you!
Lovely man.. thank you
