Video Notes:
-Two of my miters have a slight gap on the lid. This was most likely due to too much glue in the joint and nowhere for the glue to go when I clamped the box together. Assuming the inside corners contacted first when the box was clamped.
-I should have used darker spline material as a black line would probably have been more visible in the end. In that case I would have used walnut for the interior liner.

I like the subtly (sp?) of the complimentary woods.
Why did you want your Splines to be soooo thin? A thin table saw blade would’ve been too thick? Nonetheless, the box turned out great. Thanks for sharing.
I watched another video where a craftsman showed how to get rid of the miter gaps by burnishing the edges and then sanding.
Without a doubt one of the best woodworking youtube contributors. This could easily be on TV
Thank you!
As if TV were the Holy Grail
But I agree, this box is gorgeous and the dedication to making it is inspiring for all of us.
I cast this (and other high quality workmanship videos) on my TV on Saturday mornings when i can (got a 6 month old lol) The future is now old man! (Malcom in the Middle reference)
The race car and train sound effects were hilarious. Great video. 👌🏻
You're about the only channel I don't watch at 2x the normal speed. That was a very enjoyable 20 minute watch. What a beautiful box.
My boss had a floor installed, of replaned century old oak barn wood. I collected some scraps to make a box for his birthday next month so I’m watching vids to learn how to do it. This is the best one so far, in doing everything I planned to do with my wood. Thanks so much; the lining was something I had not thought of. I was going to router the box and lid to fit the lid. This is a much smarter idea.
Who else loved the choo-choo moment ?
i called my wife to come and watch that moment, she was laughing too! (also "check all the boxes" was very funny)
+1 #CornyDad4Life!
My 4 year old stopped playing in the next room and made me go back and play it again. He approved.
Impressive. I really enjoyed the way the lid slowly settled down into place towards the end of the video. Shows how precise the fit was! That was cool.
They just keep getting better. Love the sound effects, too.
This is great. Love how subtle the splines are.
Boy, you have come a LONG way from your first box! This little box is exquisite, showcasing all your hard won experience. Thanks so much for sharing!
You are a great demonstrator. Thank you so much for the time you put into these videos!
Beautiful work, Jay. I really appreciate all the hand tool work you’re incorporating these days. The slip fit of the lid at the end really makes that attention to detail pay off!
Great delicate work Jay!Inspirational enough small token piece but a load of material and skill details involved plus record paper thin spline
All the best of health and happiness
Jay
I like the thin splines, and matching the grain is always a nice touch!
One of my favorite projects you've done Jay. Loved the moment when you put the lid on after installing the liners and it slowly, gently slid down on its own, the air pressure slowing the lid's descent because of the near perfect fit. Videography was top notch as well as always.
First a shop apron and now a long sleeve shirt. Who are you and what have you done with Jay Bates?! Just kidding. Your woodworking skills are improving and you always explain what you're doing really well. And very nice project. Loved watching this.
hahahhahaha
Loud n crystal clear...you're the best mike..
Great video series. I've been a wood worker for 4 decades and always learn something new watching you work.
So delicate, so cute ! Thanks for this charming job, Jay.
Great build! I love the use of the thin splines they are a very nice touch.
This is spectacular Jay. Amazing work. Those tiny splines make a huge difference and were definitely the right decision!
Thank you
Incredible attention to detail, you sir have my utmost respect!
Your small, fine woodworking projects are by far my favorite of any on CZcams. Your box making is approaching Marty Bracker tier!
Fantastic ! Love the detail of the "micro splines" . and your technique was educational . The flawless result speaks volumes . thanks for taking the time to explain yourself in great detail as you went along. I know I learned a lot .
That is an absolutely beautiful box. You make it look so easy. I would love to be able to make something this nice for my wife. I love the attention to detail you put into it, making sure the pattern of the grain flowed around the entire box. Keep up the excellent work!
Very cool build. Expertly executed box, and what a result!
Very nice build. Your skill set has improved vastly in a short amount of time. Keep up the nice work.
Your woodworking discipline is mesmerizing to watch!! As per usual a beautifully instructed video. You are by far my favorite woodworker on CZcams!
Keep up the awesome work Jay!
Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it :)
Those are some of the most satisfactory freehand straight lines I have seen in 40 years. Against the grain too. Niiiiiceee.
Had some good laughs. Unbelievable, how much work is in a so little box. And nice!
Very nice little project. Love the technique for continuous grain around the box
Beautiful work. Thanks for all the little tips, I especially liked the one about not cutting all the way through when opening the box, and finishing with a hand saw, I ran into this today and I wish I had seen your video before.
Love seeing you do this small stuff. More up to my speed
Great to see how much your work has improved over the years. It's always been good but I see you moving into much deeper craftsmanship now, and it's inspiring me to make my own journey. Great stuff mate!
I have been working wood for over 50 years and stumbled onto you video. and i just learned things from you. I will try that lining the inside of the box and fit the top as you did.Loved the splines I would never have though of making them that way.You just got another follower.
Thank you for sharing your skills as I continue to learn from you over the years. Your videos are entertaining and instructional. I look forward to watching more.
Looks great! Box making can be so intricate.
Wow thinnest splines I've seen. Beautiful piece and love your videos as always!
Hi Jay, I have no adequate words to say what I was thinking watching this vid except “this was a display of some kind of brilliance!” Those splines were a work of art and when you started them I thought you may have to retreat and rethink them. Amazing.
This video is fantastic. Fine woodworking lesson and a great sense of humor. Can’t wait for your second paid lesson series, Jay. Cheers.
Great workmanship, the added sound effects and animations add so much polish to a first rate video production - amazing!!
Thanks Jay. Gave me some good ideas to add to my Beads of Courage boxes in the coming weeks.
I remember not knowing how to set up a plane properly and I always used to set up the blade almost as aggressively as you had yours when making the splines. Thankfully I know better now.
Great work, Jay. As usual.
Thanks Jay! Very clean and meticulously presented.
You're skill has come a long way these past two years.
Thanks Shawn!
Love it, building a keepsake box this week and going to follow some of your tips!
Awesome instruction! I really like how the box turned out. I didn’t even know using a shaving for a spline was a thing?! Very cool.
I found I was holding my breath when you made some of the fine cuts Cheers D
Learned a lot! It was a pleasure watching you and your twin.
Bravo! This is your finest video. Both in terms of the project showing off your artistry and skill and the production values.
Very nicely done, Jay! Thanks for sharing. Love the shooting board design - looks like it works very well.
I think I enjoyed this more than any of your other videos. And I have watched most of them. Thanks Jay.
A really nice project, and a great finished box.
Great video Jay, I know it was a smaller project but the discussion through the process is great viewing. Thanks!
Very nice Jay thanks for showing the 45degree cut using the shooting board on the lining pieces.
I really like the piston fit lid. A smashing we box to be proud off. Bring on more young man.
I missed an E of the we, if you know what I mean.
Really nice work. I really appreciate how much detail you go into about everything you are doing when you are doing it. Makes it very easy to follow especially for a wanna be woodworker! Cheers
Excellent work all around, video, edit, and of course wood. Love the tiny splines!
Very nicely made. I like the use if handtools, it makes the finished piece a bit more special.
Exquisite video Jay! I appreciated the pace and explanation along the way. Beautiful box too!
I love this box, it's perfect for a gift
Stunning workmanship Jay 👍🏼😊
Brilliantly video loved the box, the splines are amazing.
La boîte est magnifique, c’est de l’excellent travail.
Très agréable à regarder
Love your teaching style Jay, beautiful work on that box as usual. Edit for car rev, and train were fun.
I like how precise you working 👍👍👌🏆🥇
Always try to get better :)
Hi Jay. So much to learn from this project. Thanks for sharing.
Jay,
That is one nice pencil box. The grain along with the contrast real make it special.
Thanks for making the video and sharing,
Jim
Jay that looks awesome 👏. You really made that grain really stand out.
GREAT Video/Project Jay. This easily could be a beginners diary on how to make a box (a really nice box). Not only is the box beautiful but taking the time to edit is also makes this a "Must Watch"
Nicely done! And, as the video goes, the sound effects were a fun touch.
Great video Jay. I haven't done this yet, but you're inspiring me to jump into the hand tool game.
Hey Jay cool chopstick trick when applying the finish , never thought of using them for spacers, THANX !!!!!
Beautiful box. Beautiful work.
Dude. Seriously great video. Very well done. Thank you for sharing this.
Nice. I learn so much from each of Jay’s videos.
A beautiful piece of wood becomes a work of art. Nicely done.
So beautiful!! Great work Jay! Love how much you’ve dived into the finer side of woodworking. ;)
Wow!!!! Loved every second of this video.
Yes mate, humour is creeping back in there. Nice work.
very fine work Jay. I enjoyed watching your techniques.
I've said it before, and I will say it again. You are the modern day Norm Abram. Love your work Jay.
Thank you for the kind words, Barry.
Nice work, I was like wow at the end. thumbs up to you
I have to say, you've come a long, long way in the past few years, and I applaud you. I first subscribed to you when you were still working out of the apartment - I think it was a blanket chest that you made. The video quality, voice quality, and the narration is just simply amazing. You deserve way more subscribers.
Nicely done, Jay. Very nice. I really enjoyed watching this video. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
Reminds me of my education :) Best regards MrHandwerk, great project! :)
You always take the most mundane task with the simplest items (a box) and make it interesting. You are a master of explaining the thought process of what, how, and why. Great work man! I always enjoy the "ding" on Sunday morning and a new Jay Bates video.
Thank you very much for the feedback. I appreciate it.
Nicely done, as usual. Great video. Thanks Jay
Great work. Your video skills are as good as your woodworking and teaching skills.
Jay, I enjoyed this video. The hand tool techniques were most helpful. Nice touch and a nice project.
This is just gorgeous, gorgeous work, Jay! Beautifully shot and a beautiful end product. Makes me want to get in the shop, which is always a good sign!
Those splines!! Nice work, sir!
It is good to see a scraper used to finish the surfaces, not sandpaper. It really does provide a much deeper and more textured finish to the wood.
Beautiful box and great explanation with the 4 sided great matching! Also sound effects were dope.
Great job man!
Beautiful job on the box Jay. Several years ago I purchased a White Limba board, 2" thick, 9" wide and 8' long to make guitar bodies from. It was just rough sawn, straight from the mill. I was pleasantly surprised once i ran it through the planer ..entire length was nicely flamed from one side to the other. Sometimes ya get lucky
Beautiful work Jay!
Beautiful work.... I'm so please, if even for a brief moment, you were able to experience the splendor of being a left-hander!!! LOL... Thanks for sharing.... Jack
It’s a really lovely piece.
Commendable skills, as usual. Lil bit of a show off with that plane. Effortless use of it to smooth the top edge. While I was in awe of that, I was like...he's totally showing off! LOL! Great work, Jay!
Jay, love it ! Always enjoy watching your videos😊
