Abandoned Newcastle General Hospital

- After sneaking past security we find whats left of Newcastle General Hospital. Building started in 1868 and was opened in 1870 as the infirmary for Newcastle union workhouse. In 1921 the administration was seperated from the workhouse and renamed The Wingrove Hospital. In 1948 it was changed again to Newcastle General Hospital and became part of the NHS. Across the road is Angel Heights, this was the nurses quarters and it was linked by an underground tunnel, which still survives but is bricked off. When the Newcastle NHS foundation trust reorganised, most of the acute services were moved to the RVI and Freeman Hospitals between 2008 and 2010. Within a few years the whole hospital was closed down and has lay derelict ever since. It has now been bought by Newcastle university and they have plans to turn it into a campus for ageing and vitality.
I was a patient on the neuroscience ward in 2006 post surgery on my spine. I have thought about then place often so I would like to thank you for the trip to a moment in my past.
Nobother I enjoyed my trip around the place
I was born here. Sad to see it in this state, but thank you for posting.
I used to work in Neurosciences in the 1990's. Fascinating yet sad to see it again. Thanks chaps 👍
My Mam worked on Neurology early 1990s. Ward 32.
I had a colonoscopy at the General back in the sixties when the procedure was in its infancy.my father had a number of surgical interventions, sadly he also passed while a patient. My mother also passed in the General after suffering a heart attack. It always seemed to be a good hospital in my experience.
It was a great hospita, also I am very sorry for your loss
Wish my mam was still around to see this. She was a night "sister" on geriatrics there for something like 25 years.
I lived on Wingrove Gardens and my Gran was on Wingrove Road off Nuns Moore. The Hospital was right next door. Weird seeing it abandoned.
DR. Dobrowsky was my consultant 😊 He was lovely
I was on that first ward after an rta, also my daughter was born there at the maternity ward, think the building is still there. My dog loves the grounds even today...
Will all be demolished in a few years and become an aged living place
Had my head repaired after falling off a swing in 1953, i was in for 11 long days, just after the nationisation of NHS! The nurses were really bitchy, and didnt like treating a peasant like me from working classes. BOTH my parents worked, which was teally odd in those days!
Ha! That ward you're in at 1:30 was used in an episode of Vera I watched recently. I couldn't figure out where the hell they were because it seemed so high up.
Haha I didn't know
I am surprised it's not rat infested it's also sad to see what has become of the hospital
Will be gone in a few weeks, already started to bring machines onto site
Great Hospital. Born there as was my sister. My son and Daughter. Sad the people of the West end have to travel to city centre or to Heaton for freeman Hospital. It is a great disgrace that buildings are allowed to get in this state.
Yes but the university have big plans to turn the whole site into an aged living campus
@@geordieurbex2200 That is already there. Last I heard they were after the site for nothing to build a Mosque. That is why it is still not developed. Still something will have being agreed and it will just appear.

I was born here in 1982 and my younger brother in 1986
Will all be gone soon
Imagine recognising your name from above a bed and you were one of the last in there.
Shame to see it like this
Owned by Newcastle University now and they plan to make it into an elderly living place
I worked on that ward , ward 30 neurology 😢
My Mam did early 1990s
I had major surgery there when I was 6 months old.
Thought that building had been demolished but if it is still there why is it in that state when we are told we need more hospitals and peoples names still seen is that right
Just waiting to be demolished nd turned into an ageing nd vitality place by the university
I thought Tesco's had bought the land and wanted to build but for some reason whether it be local objections or contaminated land they couldnt.
Supposedly there are underground tunnels to the old nurses home accross the road. Whether that's true or not or just what kids used to tell each other I'm not sure.
@MD Newcastle University have bought the land, there making it into an ageing and vitality campus, if you look at my video of angel heights I find the tunnel between that goes under the west road, but its bricked up
@@geordieurbex2200 i wonder if Tesco's looked at it and due to the hospital the land was contaminated so never bothered. Was not long after it closed that was doing the rounds.
Like Burger King wanted the old police station but too many objections about a Burger King drive through being there.
Please please please do you mind telling me the location for this? I went the other day and it was blocked off I just couldn’t find the entrance near the RVI?
It's the Newcastle General not the RVI. On the western side of the city. Maybe that's why you couldn't get in?
@@chondrompala6533 sorry no that’s where I went. Not RVI. I went to Brighton grove on west road couldn’t get in loads off like temp building etc
@@h7udn316 dood it's not abandoned they probably got let in by someone for a walk around
Yeh man the security just let us in to walk around the wards full of asbestos
@@geordieurbex2200 what it’s that easy they didn’t stop you ? Which road did you go in via please ?
Is this the one on the west road? I was born there!
Yes
Hey, I'm doing a paranormal investigation this Friday. How do you get into here. All the best, Jordan.
There's security, so unless they let you, I can't imagine you getting in
Ahh, thanks for that.
I was born there 😊
Is this in Australia or England
England haha
Don't let this lad kid you mate. It's in Australia, keep searching I'm sure you'll find it. Good luck!
I was born there and my first child born there too
Thats England look at the clouds
"Should have shut the gate" shouldn't be in there in the first place ffs. It's ok u can waste valuable NHS time if u have an accident
Great videos but might want to blur your faces…?
Why? It's just civil trespass, not a criminal offence
@@geordieurbex2200 Fair enough! I thought it was an offense.
Na only if you break in or go equipped
