The broadcast sent America into a mass panic. Millions of shoppers swarmed into grocery stores to begin hoarding toilet paper. The Scott Paper Company insisted that the shortage was being artificially induced, and urged people to stop panic-buying the product. I recall back in the late 70s, the company I worked for put out an internal study predicting oil prices at over $200/barrel by 2000. This was a simple extrapolation of price trends over the last couple years. The C-Suite based their plans on it.
By the early 80s prices were dropping and the CEO was “featured” as one of the ten most overpaid of the year.
Lesson: be flexible.
Lots of people are going to have about 10 years of tp sitting in the garage/basement.

The panic buyers are clearing out these items so there ends up being a functional shortage for the rest of us. Haven't seen tp in my local store in more than 2 weeks
a) People are being told to stay home from work/school. b) People showing symptoms are told to shelter in place. You're not going anywhere, so you're going to the bathroom at home! You don't know how long this is going to last, so you buy ahead!
Not knowing what was happening about 3 weeks ago I went into a Walgreens looking for TP. There was maybe one pack left, I wasn’t too surprised cause this aisle has been slim before. But there’s no price, so I ask the manager who much the price for this no name brand pack of 6 or 8 was and he’s said $8.50. I said no thanks!!
Thank goodness I got a more reasonably priced pack or 12 at Target. It was the last pack! I’m set and, I haven’t seen a pack 🧻 since!! 🤣 Wish I had some stock in it tho!!

Just go to the store and you'll see there is a very real shortage of TP right now. If you need it, it doesn't matter that more will be coming next week or month.

Thanks for the comic relief. I remember this strange event. Oddly I don't know how wallstreet can be doing so bad when one can invest in paper companies, Lysol and such and I am inclined to think if one needs work the medical field is hiring.
Yep people are definitely just going to have the credentials get hired in the medical field. Its not the janitorial staff people are talking about when they say medical is hiring.

All that can be explained easily: toilet paper is a voluminous items with lwp tuen over therefore supermarkets have a low stock of it on a per unit basis. Small increase in global sell will lead to this item being out-of-stock first.
Just in time supply chains don't have the flexibility for people being told to stock up for a possible month's isolation. On the other hand, most people who shop at Costco have an over supply in normal times. *shrug*

MinorZero idk maybe it’s homebrewed diesel, which is relatively plausible. But engine oil still has an expiration date, like 5 years tops for an unopened can.
@@khakimzhanmiras Yeah I guess Diesel is very plausible, there are many valid alternatives you can make.Usually it is gasoline for fast cars though, from what I understand normal gasoline is good for about a year, not 30 because of the process

Our country's slept on the switch all these decades thinking epidemics can't happen in this Modern Age. Too many people are starving will eat any animal not knowing what disease they can get. And so many are traveling spreading who knows what? Our big cities are Petri dishes. The scenarios are still the same as it was during the Black Plague, the flu epidemic in 1918. Where trade ships & warships transmitting diseases from one port to another. This toilet paper scarcity scare reminded me of Johnny Carson spouting about it shortage that got people to panic. Glad Trump realize this is real and not fake news.. but his delay I'm not testing right away has escalated now.Why didn't our governors say Dam! we're going to test to know how many people caught this. These Dam companies are slowly but finally at full throttle making masks and ventilators.. I pray to God we're not too late

I'm NOT a 'hoarder', but it just so happened that my favourite store had a really good price on large packages of toilet paper a few months ago, and I bought as much of it as I could afford simply to get it at a really good price. THEN along comes Covid 19 and people start panic buying things like toilet paper, to the point that the shelves were emptied of TP and this lasted for several weeks. This makes me extra glad that I bought so much of it before people went into panic mode.

I was in those gas lines with my mom in Southern California back then they used to have odd and even license plate days. People were still in other people's license plates.

You know why what's happening now sucks? I have Crohn's disease and it's been impossible to get my preferred type of TP. When you go #3 sometimes 15-20 times in a day the more you are stressed, not having certain things can eventually lead to actual surgery. Or result in serious hemorrhoid damage if you HAVE to hit the ER b/c your hemorrhoid is clotted closed, so blood flows in but not out... yeah, an ER doc had a scalpel and used it to basically pull out the whole clot. Almost as painful as intestinal surgery... & more of a pain in the butt (laugh at the awesome pun, it IS funny) because that area has more sensitive nerves on the surface than deeper under the skin.
