    We flew to Washington to talk with a friend of ours about building while attending a BS & Beer event. Here's how it went! If you'd like to connect with Bryan or Tim, links are above. If you want to attend a BS & Beer event you can find it there as well. Tim talks on 24" or 16" OC framing, R-Sheathing from Huberwood, and how he was able to frame this house the way that he did.

    Have you ever done 24" OC as opposed to 16" OC? What are your thoughts on the R-Sheathing? Curious what you guys have to think about the things we went over.
    Unfortunately our time was short with Tim as we were there to shoot other things for outside of the channel. Still happy to have gotten to talk about the things we did!
    Who should I visit next?

      I used 24" when I enclosed my patio in So Cal. Just supporting a "lean too" with rolled roofing. After 20 years, no problems.

    I’ve been deep diving into construction from a very limited knowledge 2yrs ago. I’ve burned through all of FHB podcast, half of unbuildit, on CZcams following you, Timmy, the Coffman crew, Essential Craftsman, Steve Baczek, Joe Lstiburek, and I could go on. For all the audio I’ve gone through seeing the final product with finishes not just framing, mini/multi split head locations as well as interior/exterior details for zip R. This is the video that connected so many concepts for me. Thank you both Matt and Timmy.

    Easy to remember the name though..
    Genius!
    When he’s working on a deck he yells out to passers by and says
    hey…come up here and sit on my deck!
    Love your stuff buddy!
    Good to see your growing.
    You know the humor…..framer guy!

    If you frame interiors walls 24" OC, be sure to be diligent with installing blocking where it will be needed for cabinets, shelving, towel bars, grab rails, etc. As for the extra stud thickness for shear, perhaps using T-Studs with the wider flange on the outside would solve for shear requirements and then reduce any nailing accuracy problems with the thicker sheathing panel.

  • @patrickferrie5895
    @patrickferrie5895 Před měsícem

    so if you are framing 24" OC that means 5/8" drywall on the walls too, correct? Hear in the midwest back in the 80's we did a lot with sealing foundation plastic to wall plastic to ceiling plastic,the problem with that was too tight at the time.Air exchangers couldn't move enough air.We were also using 1" foam on a 2x6 exterior wall with the metal strap cross bracing.

  • @AVBros37
    @AVBros37 Před měsícem +1

    Glad to see you’re doing more stuff on CZcams again. My feelings on the R-sheathing are-meh. I’m not convinced that green waterproof layer on zip is gonna last anywhere near as long as tyvek style WRB. In SoCal we used to use a ton of osb and there is so little rain it didn’t really matter (except for the occasional sprinkler). Before that it was tar paper over real plywood.
    Up in the PNW I always go with tyvek and I agree with Tim rain screens aren’t necessary. If you really want breathability use tyvek stucco wrap.

    • @phamlam3720
      @phamlam3720 Před měsícem +2

      There have been many test done and ZIP has proven to be one of the most durable WRB.
      Tyvek cannot air seal as well and easily as ZIP.
      Some people don’t care about air sealing but anyone building a quality home wants an air tight house.

    • @AwesomeFramers
      @AwesomeFramers Před měsícem +1

      I understand your skepticism, we were all that skeptical of Tyvek in the 80's

    I've used a bunch of zip r the town I live in has made it code supposedly they say you can't get a proper r value in a 2x6 wall nonsense but I think it makes the walls less ridged I cut in diagonal braces in a few choice walls but I would rather put foam on the out side of sheathing or glue it to drywall but what do I know and it's not my call and unless you can find a longer router bit no more routing out opening I have to cut them with my skill saw routing was neater

    @Montezuma0 Před měsícem

    Lowering building costs doesn’t really affect how much the house will cost. The market determines the price of a house, especially in places like California. So if you make a house cheaper then the builder will just make more money.
    Customers pay for features like square footage and other amenities. They don’t care about stuff like foundation or framing costs.

    • @AwesomeFramers
      @AwesomeFramers Před měsícem

      Adding 20% in materials+ markup and profit+ taxes + interest rates on the mortgage, does indeed make a difference. As a builder our margins never go up, they only get squeezed

    • @Montezuma0
      @Montezuma0 Před měsícem

      @@AwesomeFramersMy point is that if a builder cuts costs here and there on things like framing or labor, the customer will pay the same amount for the house. The builder makes more profit.
