- In this video we look at the Lag for break in Pool. Lagging for the break is a way of deciding which player breaks first using skill rather than the toss of a coin. The aim of the lag is to play a ball up and down the table with the ball the ends up nearest the cushion being the winner.
The shots are carried out on a 7ft Supreme Winner UK 8 ball table

Nice simple video, and I respect the effort that must have gone in to getting the virtual fist-bump right!
The only thing that wasn't covered here was the object ball finishing in the jaws of the corner pocket, which also isn't allowed and is a loss by default.
Thanks. Yes you're absolutely right, forgot that one.
Cheers man. You are the best!
In snooker me and my mate always played closest to the balk line after a bounce instead and not the cushion. TBH when deciding to break at pool (in the pub!) I can only ever think of having to flip a coin. I always cringe when the opponent bounces the coin off the table! 😂
😂 Or catches it and slams it down on the cloth 🤦♂️
I'm loving the self fist bump!
Cool thanks
If I’m playing a “best of 3” game I usually throw the lag so my opponent breaks in the first game. I’d prefer to have the second break because if I win the first game I’m in control to potentially win the match in the second game. If I lose the first game, I’m in control of the second to potentially win that. Either way, the second game is more important than the first.
Interesting and I get the logic. Although if you lose the 2nd they’re in control of the decider! Lots of ways to look at it.
I imagine a virtual ball on the baulk cushion and try and land on that. Gives you something to 'aim' for.
Hi, i asked you maybe about a year ago about your new cloth which i believe is a hainsworth precision.. im sure your well used to it now and i’m getting my table reclothed soon and was wondering how it compares to the hainsworth match???
It’s a great cloth and very happy with it. It’s finer than match and therefore a lot quicker but I prefer that. With it being fine it can mark easily if you’re not careful with it but mine has held up really well.
Very good the idea of the two players act by yourself. You forgot to said you can't touch the jaw of the pocket.
Thanks, yep I forgot to mention that one.
nearest to which cushion?
My first thought was, "Wow, he's got a twin!" Perhaps a different set of rules, but I'm sure I've seen advice to allow the other player to strike his ball first.
😂 Rules might vary a little from competition to competition. It doesn’t have to be exactly simultaneous as that would be impossible anyway. You can certainly let your opponent strike the ball first but usually you are required to hit your ball before theirs has hit the cushion
I think if the 2 balls hit each other, then it's a re-do.
In my local blackball league we just toss a coin, it's in the rules of the league.
Yes so do we for league games. In singles tournaments when it might be best of 3 or 5 we use the lag as having the extra break can be an advantage.
