CLIPPING PARROT WINGS | WING CLIPPING IS WRONG | SHELBY THE MACAW

  • Hey Flockers,
thanks for joining us on another video, this one is fun and chaotic with a very serious message - why wing clipping is dangerous. Wing clipping a parrot, or any other bird is no longer considered a viable method of bird keeping and is frowned upon by most people. This outdated method of ensuring your bird's "safety" is no longer acceptable and I want to help spread the word that clipping a parrot's wings is dangerous, and put's your parrot's life at risk. Wing clipping a parrot to stop it from flying into windows, clipping a parrot's wings to stop it from escaping, and cutting a parrot's flight feathers off to encourage it to bond to you are NOT good enough excuses to clip wings, and there is no way of convincing me otherwise. Under rare circumstances it may be essential to clip a parrot's wings in order to prevent injury, such as when a bird is completely blind.

I appreciate you educating viewers with videos like this one. We need to spread the word about wing clipping and help how people view pet birds. My husband and I had been looking to add another macaw to our family and we decided to take a look at the rescues first. I was so excited to go into the building and look and all the potential macaws that I could have taken home and given the ability to fly. However, when I asked for more information the adoption lady said that in order to adopt out a bird you have to sign a contract saying that you will come in every six months to get their wings clipped. It made me so mad. She acknowledges that "ya I know it's healthier for them to fly but it's just dangerous. So no we don't do that here" She proceeded to call the free fliers in my area stupid because their macaw had experienced two crow chases and flown off (came back later of course).
It breaks my heart that this place is one of the only adoption/rescues for macaws in the state and the birds trapped there will never experience flight. If anything ever happened to me and I had to give up Fumbles I would hate for her to go there, it would be torture for a bird who spent their whole life flying to never flying again. I want to help teach everyone about the proper care for these birds so we can get rid of rescue clipping rules like that one. Anyways, I hope you don't mind my rant I just wanted to make the point that we need people like you in this world. Thanks again!
Ps. My husband and I had a very long conversation and have decided to get a local baby greenwing this winter season rather than adopting. Sometimes it's best to give a baby bird a good life from the beginning so it never has to go through the things that the adoption birds do.

I got a Indian ringneck yesterday and the people I got him from said that to be able to tame him to clip his wings. I instantly stopped them and said it’s not fair on the bird as they are made to fly and cutting their feathers stops the bird having the freedom after a while they did agree with me but I’m glad I stopped the bird from getting its wings clipped and having a unfriendly home 😊

I just had a fight with people in the comments on one of the most famous wing clipping videos here on CZcams. I was so angry….thank you for this video. I have seven cockatiels, none of them clipped, we have the environment safe for them. There is no need for wing clipping at all. If you don’t know how to handle a bird - don’t get a bird, buy a hamster instead.

My bird is fully flighted.... She did spend a night in a tree a few months ago and I was told I should clip her and I responded saying that had she been clipped she probably would have been eaten by a predator. I credit my recall training and bond with her as the reason I was able to recover her in 18 hours. I absolutely believe my way is the best way..... For me and my flock. I have had birds for many years and now have only one. I have learned and grown and stopped feeding processed foods years ago but didn't expect everyone to be in the same place as me. The avian community can be judgmental and I won't be bullied into clipping but can't judge someone else for not being able to escape their fear or who lack the information. Encouraging is different from judgment. I encourage everyone to do the very best for their flock and learn facts and not just opinions. Telling people that they are wrong or abusive won't change minds. Providing sound information on the benefits of being flighted and the myths surrounding clipping (like they are more tame clipped 🙄) is a positive way to discourage the practice. I apologize if I sound critical. This is, of course, only my opinion

I was clipping my cockatiel and conures wings and feeding an all seed diet for the first 2 years till I rescued a clipped rainbow lorikeet he was only 2 years old and was being fed seed and had been clipped at only 2 even when his wings grew back he couldn’t fly he got out of breath so easily i thought if this is the damaged caused at only 2 I can’t imagine how bad he’ll be if he continues like this so I researched diet and let all my birds grow out their wings and started feeding them properly I now have 8 flighted parrots my only acceptation is my male IRN he is disabled and has never flown in the time I’ve had him

    Absoluletly agree
Birds with clipped wings are more likely to get agressive and anxious cause they lack "Flee" response to situations they arent common with
    Thanks for video 🦅💕

We have a local family that has a pair of free flying birds. They fly around the middle school and everyone loves seeing them. Last year someone actually got ahold of them, stole them, butchered their wings and tried to sell them at the waterfront. Their poor wings were so damaged. Thank god they were recognized and were reported and brought home.

There are technically exceptions such as blindness, untreatable siezures, and similar medical reasons that fully prevent safe flight.

Oh god, the thumbnail made me CRINGE. Poor clipped wings. Seeing Shelby fly is so joyful. I can't imagine that being taken from her. So great to see you guys and your birbs. 🥰

It’s very sad isn’t it. The majority of birds have had their wings clipped for the completely wrong reasons, it’s so rarely required. X

The #1 and only reason why birds shouldn’t be clipped is because they are birds and birds need to fly. For anyone who thinks it’s okay to clip their wings, imagine yourself being able to do one thing others can and the one person you’re supposed to trust betray you and takes away that gift others can’t have, the ability to be a skilled flyer. Not only will you lack confidence within yourself but can’t trust your handler anymore. If you can’t handle an animal that can fly, don’t get a bird. Stop the excuses!

Can I also add that, keeping a birds leg band is ALSO dangerous. Please remove them as well. Those bands serve no purpose other than, the date, place, and who the breeder was.
