    Not going to lie, now your bend is now in the area where your wheel was. You need to clamp a little further back than your mark. You don't want any bends from that axle head to that black line. This is a common mistake and will cause binding that will slow things down.
    Easier way is to drill a 3/32 hole into your wood there. place the axle in making sure that your mark is above the depth of the hole and lean on it with your hammer will accomplish the same thing without leaving any vise grip marks on your polished axle.

    Putting a little notch in with a drill and file helps out a bit. Solid advice though
