Thanks for this! There is so much not shown here. We did talk about how we eat a lot of plant based meals, but we just didn’t show it. We also do enjoy some sweets, but they are not eaten in excess by any means. We’ve found a very healthy balance, but truly… we shouldn’t have to defend ourselves either way! 🤣

Oh I do enjoy the German supermarkets. We shopped Aldi last night in Victoria,Texas and it felt a lot like I was back in Germany. 😂. Managed to grab some Knoppers and Milka candy. It will be interesting when y'all shop for groceries in Japan. Google translate will be your friend for sure! I will miss the German adventures, but can't wait to see what lies ahead.

Have you tried Baumkuchen? Because you may see that in Japan, it's called Baumu and has a lot of varieties there. It was brought to Japan by german POWs.
It is called Baumkuhen in Japanese. As バウムクーヘン [baumukuuhen in Katakana].

Hi! I just found your CZcams yesterday and love what I've seen so far! I read through your "about" info and thought maybe Tanner is working for the US government in some capacity but I couldn't see anything about it? Is he working for a US contractor? I'm just curious...
My husband is retired US Army and we lived in Vilseck for seven years so watching your Graf videos made me so homesick for Germany! I worked on a US Army contract for Northrop Grumman in Graf while we lived there but we left when my husband retired in 2001 so it's been quite a while since we've been there. I'm going to watch more of your videos so I can revisit parts of Germany we miss so much!
If you like Pommesgewürz. There is a YT Channel called Pommesmän and he has published his special recepy for that. It is the owner of a catering service centered around Pommes and Currywurst. If you run out in Japan you might make it yourself.
Do you know the old name for Feldsalat? If I tell it you will remember the fairytale in which the pregnant mum had stolen the Feldsalat of the neighbours garden because she was hungry for this item and for punishment her born daughter have to live in a tower. There her hair grow since a prince came and ask her to let her long long hair down. 😂😂😂 Yes, Rapunzel. The girl is named after the Feldsalat which is called Rapunzeln (Plural).
Marzipan is the best. Also like the gingerbread cookies, we call them paper cookies because of the white layer on the bottom.

Japan will definitely be a big change! Sorry to see you guys go, but you're young and adventurous, so wishing you the best on that! Regarding your food choices, I was a little suprised at how much sugar you still consume (Chocolate, Nutella, chocolate milk, chocolate müsli).
I thought so too. Everyone should know how unhealthy some of these foods purchased here are. The big players in the food industry (!) are of course happy about it and don't care at all because it's legal and profitable.
In America, a lot more sugar is added to otherwise comparable foods. We are increasingly and rightly denouncing unhealthy food. Some things are actually forbidden. Unhealthy sounds almost trivializing, many things literally make you addicted and sick!
@@wallerwolf6930 Also watch out for anything "enriched". That's the really unhealthy stuff. Especially rice, noodles, flour and bread!
@@peterpain6625 This is also correct and unfortunately the case ;-)), especially because such products are very tasty. In moderation it is not a problem because certain carbohydrates, for example, do not cause blood sugar levels to rise too quickly and do not drop again so drastically.

Risa is a Registered Dietitian actually too so she makes sure we are having variety, pairing our carbs with protein/fat, getting adequate fiber & also meeting vitamin/mineral needs!
So when exactly are you're going to leave Germany? Will you be back in the States before you go to Japan? Sorry, if I've missed those details... I have loved your journey in Germany and throughout Europe... Especially - and that has nothing to do with Germany itself, I guess- was you, giving birth to your beautiful 2nd child and wonderful 2nd daughter! I felt like, I was there with you and Tanner! As I have never given birth, it touched me so much.

I wish I could stress how much money the Americans would save, hundreds of dollars a month, and the food is soooo much better for you!!😋 everything, well not sweets & chips😊. Hope you have a nice experience in Japan! We have been following the channel since you arrived. We are retired Americans & are staying! (Edeka is more experience though 🤨)
Oh yes so so much cheaper! We’ve loved the stores! We could have done a tour of Aldi cause we do shop there too, but we’ve found a few more favorites in Edeka! So fun to hear you guys are retired and loving live in Europe! 👏

Yen rates are really good to shop there when you are paying with dollar. Definitely different type of food but you can find really good stuff. Definitely better quality then American products. Best of luck.

"there´s one chocolate milk which is better" you probably mean Chocomel, gotta look in the dry section for that one since it doesn´t have to be refrigerated. And did you know that Döner actually is a Dürüm just in a different type of flat bread and Dürum not just the burrito style flat bread itself?
Oh we have tried the chocomel one! Don’t hate us, but we don’t love it as much! I would have thought so because it’s really rich, but maybe a bit too rich for us?? We really enjoy it mixed with a little bit of milk. Still really tasty though! 😋

Hi Noa, Willa, Risa and Tanner. Well, it seems to me like a regular shopping and if you wouldnt have tried out products from the mentioned supermarket you wouldnt have found your favourites. Dont go for products just because they are couple cents cheaper in the other supermarket. You did very well. I remember your first shopping in a small supermarket always with the question in mind: what is this and this and will it taste. It seems you developed to a professional grocerie shopper and I understand filling with just one hand free for filling the bag its not that fast doing 😀 Well, first of course, securing Noa. We live in Switzerland, but drive often to the nearest Edeka in Germany. Groceries are about 40% cheaper and almost none of the German brands are available in Switzerland. What about all the awesome German beers and canned soups?

Such a big price difference!! That’s fun you get the best of both worlds with access to different brands! As for German beers, we don’t drink alcohol. As for the canned soups… now we are intrigued! We make our soup from scratch at home but sounds like there are some good brands to try?
As your groceries didn’t include many particularly „German“ items (I think Feldsalat was pretty much the most German item) I think you’ll do just fine in Japan.
Especially if you’ll be living close to where US forces are stationed you might find supermarkets that carry groceries tailored to US tastes, just like the supermarkets around Grafenwoehr are.
Also I assume that you’ll find lots of fresh produce in Japan.
And, who knows, which new and delicious foods you might discover in Japan.
Yeah we dont eat a lot of German foods at home to be honest! We are excited to find out about the produce in Japan & we will definitely share about the new foods! 😋

japan will be quite a change for you. coming from the alps region you will be disappointed by the dairy, cheese and chocolate selections in markets in japan.
do not forget Edeka is most expensive one

I believe that Tanner said five years total is maximum permissable for overseas contracts.
That’s true! But that five year limit can be reset after two years in the US… so… expect to see us moving somewhere else again if I’m still working with the US govt!
Did you know that there are government regulations for baking Laugenstangen and pretzels? It involves a special dough, and that's why the government mandates wearing safety goggles and protective clothing during production. The production area must also be well-ventilated.

The dough is just a yeast dough. No special safety needed for that.
But before baking you dunk the pretzels or rolls in soda lye and you need protection at this production step.
Lye can be more dangerous than acid.
I‘m very curious, how japanese supermarkets will compare in selection and quality. Also, did you ever make use of on-base shopping or is your contract not allowing for that?
That would also have interested me; to see to what extent local supplies were available and prices, however I can imagine that videoing would probably not be allowed.
Yes we are interested to find out and will take you along the ride! We’ve heard produce is not as fresh which surprises us!

Hello, nice to see that you have found suitable foods for you in Germany and are actually paying attention to good, “healthier” products! So lots of fruit and vegetables, although frozen ones are sometimes even the better choice.
Personally, I stay away from so many products containing sugar and would advise you to reduce your consumption a little. The food industry (especially the few big ones, like Nestle, for example) sees things differently and aggressively advertises their products, especially those for children, who become addicted at an early age, similar to what fast food chains do.
The problem of obesity is most widespread in the world in the USA and Germany is also trending more and more in this direction.
So please be careful when choosing foods, the main cause of later illnesses.
I wish you a nice stay in Japan and a varied (healthy ;-)) cuisine.
Most things, even processed foods, are healthier by default in Germany or Europe in general. There are many additives that aren't allowed over here. In the USA reading the ingredients on things from the supermarket look more like an advanced chemistry set rather than food to me. Especially everything "enriched" is kinda vile ;)

Nutella sure is a staple, probably the quickest breakfast before school and time is definitely of the essence in the morning.

Be prepared to pay a lot more for veggies and fruits in japan. As a general rule expect at least double the price of the product in the U.S. (if you are lucky).

Eeek that is a major cost difference! 😳 We have heard the produce doesn’t last as long either! I guess we will find out.
We are fortunate to not have to worry about buying groceries, but it’s definitely not true that we don’t care about the cost of things. We are conscious of the cost of things & our spending!

It depends on the Brand you can get Butter from 1,5€ to 4€. If its is organic or in sale etc.
And got the one with 34.999% water in it rather than a quality product probably.
We’ve found butter on sale too. When we do we try to stock up and freeze it. There just wasn’t a deal happening when we recorded.

Different variants with different levels of fat. They even got vegetarian alternatives.
In our Edeka we have found it near the quark and yogurt section. For example we bought the Schlagsahne (brand Weihenstephan - in dark blue bottles) the last time we shopped at Edeka.

germany is a better place for families. There is virtually all-round care here. The Japanese are prejudiced against western-looking people. If I didn't have children, I would leave for Japan immediately. Germany is extremely regulated in all areas. The authorities, letters, the housing market and currently the politics, there is nothing positive to say. The only good thing is the social benefits if you ever need them. As a high performer, you only get dragged down here
