There’ll be some even worse depreciatiors in the future, once you get these luxury cars with complicated hybrid power trains that need £20k+ new batteries etc.

Finally someone has included options in a depreciation analysis. I’ve always thought the reported resale values were overstated as they simply ignore the swag of options the purchaser also forked out for 👍

You never get back as much for the options as you do for the base car. Options are a money pit as they are rarely desired by the buyer who comes along. Yes, nappa leather is nice but 14 grand!! When I see a car I do not think, I must pay 5 grand more because the last owner had nappa, I just think, 'one point more than the one next to it that has buffalo skin". it may sway me to buy it but not pay more for it.

Agreed. Once a model is perceived as being out of date, which can happen inside a year, the price for which it can be obtained on the used market is astonishingly low. If you are buying German you get fantastic engineering. But there is a big caveat: high operating costs and low post-warranty reliability mean that the second owner also ends up spending far more than they intended. Forget about third-party warranties: only the manufacturer’s extended warranty is acknowledged by the service departments who have the resources in staff and parts access to look after these cars.

A bit suprised on your views on the Panamera Turbo S. I bought a 2 year old Turbo Sport Turismo earlier this year and it had barely dropped 20% of its new price including options, had miles on it too. It was likely overpriced due to the strange market but it seems (and still seems) to be holding its value fairly well. There is almost zero supply of used Turbo S, I think I've seen one on Auto trader in the last 12 months. It makes sense for the Panamera to tank in value (the old ones certainly did) but I'm not seeing it, where do you see it?

Mr. Sausage, I was thinking the same. Here in the Boston-Metro Region, the Panamera and Cayennes hold their value well. My sis who lives in Ft. Myers, it realistically seems a compatible model (mileage and opts included) will have a lot price $3k less.

  • @mrkiplingreallywasanexceed8311

It is an overlooked and underrated subject - but a vital one. You early on summarised the point I think all but perfectly when the fuel consumption, service & insurance costs, road tax etc etc were mentioned on the one side - and depreciation on the other; with the latter veritably dwarfing the sum of all the other items - especially as the first few years are unlikely to see any major expenses incurred with normal servicing - plus of course they will be under warranty.
As a former Audi Finance manager, it will come as no surprise to you that my stock in trade was the PCP*. Clearly, the GMFV* was a "gamble" by VWFS* - if the actual book value was lower than the GMFV, the network would naturally take the car back as promised and subject to mileage and condition, the customer would pay nothing further. This was, understandably, a vanishingly rare occurrence, however - and for obvious reasons. VWFS certainly didn't want to find itself owning a lot of cars, much less a lot of cars "upside down" in value. In short, therefore, in the overwhelming majority of cases, the part exchange value would transpire to be above the outstanding GMFV amount, with any equity going to the customer which they would often use as the deposit for the next one - or at least part thereof.
The overall point I wanted to make was this - already by 2013 when I left, something like 75% possibly 80% of new Audis were financed on Solutions (I think I recall correctly that being the VWFS brand name for the PCP). Assuming even a small annual proportional increase since then (which will partly depend on how attractive the terms are - in my day, with the base rate at 0%, VWFS could afford to offer very low APRs and it wasn't unusual to find out that once you'd factored in the "negative cost" of the deposit contribution which was often part of the deal, it could work out that over the whole period of the loan, Audi Finance had ended up paying you to borrow the money!! I digress) - it wouldn't surprise me to learn that 9 out of every 10 new cars, if not 93 out of 100, are now financed using a PCP - in other words, depreciation (aka residual value) performance was integral to the discussion even during my time back when. Because of the fact that PCPs drive loyalty - repeat business - it's highly unlikely VAG is alone in promoting them. It's a dead cert all the other marques do the same. Therefore dull or otherwise, consideration - indeed quite detailed discussion - about depreciation is very likely to be part and parcel of the buying/financing conversation - it certainly should be.
Nice one gents - as you said, for many it's neither an obvious nor fascinating topic but I greatly enjoyed it!
    *PCP - Personal Contract Purchase
*GMFV - Guaranteed Minimum Future Value (aka balloon payment)
*VWFS - Volkswagen Financial Services (which was the "go-to" Finance company for Audi, VW, Skoda, Lamborghini - etc etc all the VAG brands)

All you'd need to do is get on those wait lists ahead of time and you're quids in!

Here in Sweden, older SUVs have lost a lot of value, such as Porsche Cayane, BMW X5 and X5, various Mercedes SUVs. So in order to get more money for these, they are converted into A-tractors that 16-year-olds can drive, although then they have set the maximum speed to 18.6 miles/h.
Here is some information about what this is:
In 1963, the Swedish Transport Safety Agency introduced the option to convert and register a car or truck to an A-tractor as an alternative to an EPA-tractor. When, in the mid-1970s, the Swedish Transport Safety Agency was going to abolish the possibility of newly registering an EPA tractor, and that existing ones would be allowed to remain for a three-year period before they had to be scrapped, there were protests that forced the agency to rethink. New registration of EPA tractors was banned on 31 March 1975 but instead the A tractor regulations took over completely, and an annual inspection was introduced for the remaining EPA tractors. The abbreviation "A" stands for tractor class A (road tractor (now class I)), (class B is agricultural tractor (now class II)), which can now be driven from the age of 15 (with AM driving license).
The principle difference between the EPA tractor and the A tractor is that the A tractor must be designed for a maximum speed of 30 km/h +/- 10%, while the EPA tractor would be designed with a certain gear ratio (10:1). The car must be rebuilt so that it is obvious that it is no longer intended for passenger or goods transport. However, a seat for one or two passengers next to the driver may be provided. The car's original interior and bodywork must be retained, but must be shortened where applicable so that the space behind the front seats cannot accommodate passengers or goods. This type of vehicle is still popularly called an EPA tractor.
In August 1978 a voluntary Slow Moving Vehicle (LGF) warning plate was introduced for A tractors, but from 1 January 1982 it is a requirement to have such a plate on the rear of the vehicle.

Yes, the Swedes do it. In which other European country can you see 16 year olds driving luxury cars legally? Certainly low speed but still luxurious.
It can be pointed out that you don't see any Volvo XC 90 or XC60 as A-tractors and this is because these have a higher value used.

Good idea for a comparison. But for your first example, the G-Wagen, to appreciate in value over its first year invalidates any relationship between residual pricing and build quality, engineering, or luxury. The G-Wagen’s design goes back 43 years and it’s not even built in a Mercedes plant. As you point out, the #1 metric for retained value is demand. The G-Wagen is inferior in every way to a Japanese SUV but is a signifier of wealth, and this attribute alone causes the G-Wagen to be strongly desired among the newly rich.

Just before Christmas I decided to change my very low mileage immaculate Miini JCW 2019 model with all the toys, took it to Mini/BMW and they offered me £19.5k on a close to £40k car, took the Mini to Motorpoint looking at a very similar car that was at a very competitive price and spec so I traded it with them and got £23k for the Mini cash deal, that's £3.5k difference so this example must affect any depreciation % figures given on line?

Bought my lexus suv less than 2 years old. Depreciation in those 2 years was a frightening £28,000!!! Since then I have had it 6 years and it has lost a more modest £10k in that time. That in my book makes it a cheap car over that period especially given its reliability and running costs. It’s possibly the least expensive luxury suv if bought a few years old and it’ll stay reliable unlike a merc, bmw or anything with “…rover” in the title!
