Heart on sleeve music always go down well with me, especially the patriotic variety! I have a very good musical memory and possess perfect pitch.

The first man to publish it, Henry Carey in 1744 (roughly the same times "Rule Britannia" was written), was English; there is a French claim without evidence that they wrote it in the 1680s and there is a counterclaim that it dates from the early 1600s amongst the works of the English composer, John Bull. Beethoven quoted it much, much later in his "Wellington's Victory" (to represent the British victory over the French), was commissioned to write a set of keyboard variations on the tune in the early 19th century and numerous European states later adopted this anthem including the German Empire, Switzerland and Liechtenstein but its origin is definitely not german, so far as anyone knows.
