  • What is the DEFINITION of RENDER? What does RENDER MEAN? What even is RENDERING? DID YOU KNOW, that using RENDERING you could Export Video in Adobe Premiere Pro FASTER (up to 25x or more) ?! SO, if you want to export 4k videos faster - you should learn how to RENDER and use RENDER PREVIEWS!
In this Tutorial, we discuss HOW to Render Video in Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2020, what RENDER and RENDERING is / means, and WHY it is SO important to your entire Editing Process.
As well as the knowledge we gain about Rendering, we will also know How to EXPORT 4K / UHD / 1080p Videos 25x while still maintaining the highest possible quality video!
The definition of "rendering" usually refers to the actions of converting and compressing our video footage, photos and other assets - into a single compressed video file appearance. We render so that we can see our video edit including colour grading, transitions and other video effects before we hit export.
Essentially, the meaning and purpose of Rendering is to enable us to see what our Video will look like with our added effects and changes, without exporting. Sometimes it just makes video editing easier, other times it is necessary to render just in order to see the playback of your Drone 4K footage or 6K Footage alone.

    -------
    ---- WHEN TO RENDER:
Notice that there are a few differently coloured lines above your footage.
Green, Yellow and Red or BLANK
These are relatively straightforward - Green means that your footage has rendered preview files associated with the assets below. If you change ANYTHING underneath the green bar whether it be on the clip or even bringing text in, it will shift to being Yellow or RED.
The Yellow bar is a reminder that there are no render files for this section, so Premiere will do it’s best to playback the clip in real-time, it is possible that it can playback fine in Real-Time *ADD INFOBOX* without being rendered.
However, if it is RED, that means that you have applied something intensive to the footage. It is a warning that Premiere probably won;t be able to play that back in Real-Time.
Before you spend the time render and create previews - you should know what you are creating in order to save computer space and preserve your video quality.
    ---- RENDER PREVIEW SETTINGS
I typically prefer using Quicktime for my projects because it is a way higher quality. If you are not looking for details or are limited by file storage or computing power, you can just keep I-Frame. HOWEVER, we are going to use Quicktime for the Render files because with it, I am going to change your life and the way you export videos.
My new favourite process here is Using the AppleProRes 422 Proxy. It is the smallest file (double check with DNxHR) and still holds a TON of the resolution. So let’s select that and then check our frame size. So in order to export 25x faster, your previews HAVE to match your intended output. So for this we will RENDER AT MAX and set our sequence width and height to match our desired output, in this case, 4K (3840 x 2160).
We will hit ok and it will delete all of our already rendered files.
    ---- DIFFERENT WAYS TO RENDER
    -- RENDER Effects (only) --
Go up to SEQUENCE → Render Effects in to out
Or with default keyboard shortcuts, you can just hit Enter
This method will only render the effects that you have applied to your footage, essentially the RED scenes.
    - RENDER In and Out-
If you only want to render a section - like a few clips, you can set an in and an out point, then go back up to SEQUENCE → RENDER IN TO OUT
If you didn’t set an in to out, it will render the entire timeline
This WILL render both your Red and Yellow, and create previews for your whole timeline!
    -- RENDER Selection --
If you just have a single clip or file that is Red or is troublesome and needs render files, you can highlight it then go back up to SEQUENCE → RENDER SELECTION
REMEMBER TO DELETE YOUR VIDEO PREVIEWS AFTER YOU ARE DONE WITH YOUR PROJECT!

IF YOUR COLOURS LOOK WASHED OUT WHEN EXPORTING:

Thanks a lot for the video. Def helps. I chose 422 HQ for preview renders and exported with the same. The resulting file is huge 91GB for 14m. Can you share your process to go from QuickTime previews to H264 and still get the fast export times? I realize I can do my final export as H264, but when using the QuickTime previews that final render will be much longer. Maybe I need to select a preview file that is compatible with H264? Thanks a lot. Great channel.

Amazing video mate! I did as you said in the Sequence settings and when I go to export, I don't have those Quicktime - Uncompressed settings. If I was to choose h.264, which is what I normally choose, would that affect my rendering time? I use Prem Pro to render and export my gameplay videos that I've recorded, and the bars are always yellow. I also normally export them in HDR.

I have a 24in M1 2021 machine that I've been working with for about 5 months now and it's been able to export videos quite quickly. But recently I've been putting out longer videos for an ad agency's radio show for CZcams and the first time it took about 2 hours to export the 1 hour 15 minute video. The second time it took about 10 hours. Today it's taking about 24 hours. Now, I haven't changed the format in which I shoot, nor have any of the mogrts changed. I've also emptied the cache AND even rendered the effects before exporting the video. I am so confused as to why this is happening. Do you have any insight?

This was such an informative video. Thank you so much!! So my question is what setting can I render my video so that I can export my video at h.264? Because I can’t do it at QuickTime because that’s .mov

    • @ColinDougan
      @ColinDougan  Před 3 lety

Hey hey! First of all - thank you for your kind words!
What I typically do is; Render in Quicktime and Export (using previews) the massive File FIRST, then I bring it into Premiere, into it's own sequence and RE-EXPORT it to an H.264 to keep it compressed (still really high quality but also .mp4) because it is still faster than trying to export to entire original sequence!
If you want to make sure that you're exporting your H.264 files properly, I would highly recommend checking out the longer EXPORT video on my channel, as it goes over a few key mistakes I've been making over the last few years!
(P.s. - Sorry for the delay on this repsonse!)

I have really enjoyed your videos and have learned a lot so thank you- that said I have not quite figured out the best way to deal with my projects as I don’t know what you shoot, or what your settings are. For instance if your are shooting 6K and record to ssd in pro res or something that would be quite different than me as I am filming on an A7SIII, in 4K at a frame rate of 23.976 for the most part to SD card which records to as an .mp4. With that said do I do previews in pro res 422 and have to same settings for export then if I need to compress for CZcams do it through media encoder? If no then what should I select for my preview files? Please help me here- I have been back and for lut trying to avoid 13 hour exports!

So you said to have your previews as prores proxy, lt, or regular but you said to export your finals as hq? wouldnt your previews have to be is hq as well for this to work. Also do you have to have max bit depth and render qual. on in the previews to be able to select those options on export or can you leave them off on the previews and check them on export. Thanks so much. Also can you use prores previews and render h264 exports faster than having h264 previews and export h264? essentially do you still get the speed boost if you are using higher end previews and exporting lower or does it have to be check for check the exact same preview settings as output. I know this is a lot but I think it will help to fill some of the more specific questions.

I've been meaning to make a followup video that answers this - Sponsors took a while haha.
      You can either:
      1. Bring the large Exported MOV file into a new sequence and export with your preferred settings (this will be faster than trying to just export the whole unrendered video as MP4)
      2. Use the Quicktime trick of Compressing your video. I think I put that in my Exporting Video though...
(I.e. open up your video in Quicktime Player, go to
File --> Export as --> (4K/1080/whatever you need and change the method to be H.264 - new update)

My only issue is that most of my video footage has the yellow bar above the clips. From what I understood before and what you explained in the video, is that while it's not fully rendered, Premiere can still play the clips without issues. However, in my case, as I watch more of the clip and start doing cuts and other edits, the footage becomes much more and at some points, extremely laggy. I don't understand how that can be the case when it's supposed to go over that with no issues.

When I'm cleaning up old 8mm/16mm movie films, I usually use the P2 DVCPRO50 NTSC, simply because it's the quickest render I've found with the number of clean-up effects I apply to them. • @ColinDougan
      @ColinDougan  Před 3 lety

Hey hey! So I think this is one of a few easy fixes:
      1. Remember that you must set In and Out points for the spots you want to Render and/or Export
      2. You must RE-Render after you make changes, as it is updating the contents. This is super important when Colouring footage or using Adjustment Layers - make sure to make accurate changes when using these because it will require a large Re-Rendering.
If all is green, Select your In and Out Point and you should be good to export!
      Remember to check:
      - Render Preview File Dimensions (make sure they match your desired output if 4k, 2k, etc..)
      - Check "Use Previews" box!

Great video! one question I have is, do you break your preferred export settings i.e VBR 2 and .mp4 to use this render method. In your export video, you don't use QuickTime or CBR but with the pre-render settings you will need to match the QuickTime settings in the final export and the least compressed setting. Do you have that right? I have hit a wall with a long export that I want to maximise quality while limiting any issues with youtube. Thanks in advance Colin 🤘

    • @ColinDougan

this method is something that I use when sending drafts to clients (anticipating revisions) because I don't want to have to wait through hours of exporting just because we slightly changed a logo size, or line of text - when I have my final, you have two options:
      1. Take this massive pre-render, drop it into premiere and do a final grading and export as H.264
      2. Export your main timeline, and ignore your drafts

Do you know if we should be doing this AND using proxies on the timeline, how do you know if you're pre rendering the proxies and not the full size export files or does Premiere know to render the original files instead of the proxies you're using to scrub through the timeline? :] If that makes sense aha -__-

    • @ColinDougan
      @ColinDougan  Před 3 lety

This is a great question! SO, THE AMAZING THING is that you can do/have both!
You'll need proxies for scrubbing and editing! Proxies are tiny files though in comparison to your footage and rendered edits.
Rendering is amazing if you're about to walk away from the computer, but I mainly only render a handful of times during my editing, usually close to the end. Proxies are always on for me.
I Render when I want to see my hours (or days) of editing and gauge what it TRULY looks like. You can render and it will do the Full Res footage automatically, so once you've Rendered - feel free to disable proxies!
      - You just reminded me to make a video on Proxies - so I'll start writing
      that tomorrow! Thank you :)

Whenever I go to render my fully edited sequence, it seems to give me an error. Most of the sequence will render to green, but every single one that has a transition is on red. I tried to do render effects into out, but it still doesn’t work. Then I even tried to delete the transitions and re-render it and it still did the same thing. It happens in adobe media encoder, and it stops about a quarter of the way exporting. So aggravating because I finish projects, and then just can’t export them

Just make sure that you have a lot of room on your hard drive because it will be a huuuuge file haha.

@@roygertel You CAN use the final MOV output as your final, but you CAN'T make H.264 Proxies, unfortunately. Another workaround is to use that QuickTime Compression trick - as it now supports a compression into H.264/MP4! :)
