    I've made several videos on the GH series... including its autofocus, and you summed it up perfectly. The AF is simply not repeatable, and whilst I wouldn't say I wasted my time (any time we learn something is time well spent) I think the time spent has not produced any satisfactory conclusion.
    I still use my GH5 with Olympus Pro lenses and manually focus everything hand held. IMO, if the shooting senario makes manual focusing impossible... get another camera.

    My Panasonic kit commenced with GH1(2008) Satisfactory GH5 AF is possible by setting AE/AF Lock to M (after enabling button settings in menu). Track a moving target by lightly pressing AF/AE lock button or touch button icon on monitor, lower righ corner. As the target advances or retreats from the camera refresh AF/ AE button along the way. The techniqueis is fine with GH5 mounted to Weebill Lab gimbal.

    Nice to hear you again (miss the podcast!).
    I’ve loved using my gh5, but just got an Olympus OMD E-M5 Mark iii to try as it supposedly has great phase detect AF.
    For the stuff I do I prefer the smaller/lighter body (end up carrying it around more), the crazy good IBIS (almost no need for a gimbal), and the Olympus out of camera colours (I’m not so good with the grading).
    I’m giving up the better video codecs, 4K/50 FPS, better slow-mo and other pro features. But then again I am only a hobbyist and small letter ‘p’ pro.

    Thanks Paul, you actually saved me a lot of time. I ruled out any form of autofocus for my particular needs on the GH5 as soon as I did my preliminary test before ever using it properly. A few firmware updates came and I did not even bother checking to see if it had gotten any better. However, since 2.6 arrived, so many CZcamsrs have been praising the improvements, so my curiosity was awakened enough that I was considering once again doing the exhaustive tests that you showed in this video. You confirmed with what I saw that the GH5 shall remain and always be the small manual focussing camera that I bought it for. I see no point in autofocus if it is not reasonably reliable, smooth and above all accurate, so until Panasonic have such a system they will have to keep having the best video specific features of all DSLRs to stay competitive. Can I dream global shutter, raw and linear manual focussing is the GH6? 😉🙏🏾

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  Před 4 lety

      Me too.... I was really hoping this update would bring some changes... and the autofocus has improved massively from when the camera originally launched. Seems we're getting to the limits of what you can do with a contrast based system. When you think about it.... a compressed raw should require lower onboard processing than HEVC. We can dream!

  • @carlculpepperimages
    @carlculpepperimages Před 4 lety +1

    Well, it might have been a waste of time, but I enjoyed it anyway! I think we GH5 users have some kind of camera-related self-abuse issue when it comes to auto focus. I did a lot of tests of v2.6, myself, and I arrived at a similar conclusion for the custom settings: -2 or -3 for speed, +1 for sensitivity. But, like you, I found the results to be somewhat different every time, and therefore not useful for professional situations. Thanks for sharing, even if it was inconclusive... I always enjoy your content.

    Regards from Stockholm!
    Enjoyed your video. I rented a GH5 last Summer and mostly used manual focus. I've been using a Canon HF-10 since 2011. I thought it was pretty good - until I saw what a GH5 can do. So, I tried one out for a week.
    Since I'd never worked with a system camera before, I wasn't sure I could handle it. But, it worked out pretty well.
    I did try autofocus and yes it is inconsistent. But only a few manual shots didn't turn out well. So, I went with manual and an 8-18mm Leica.
    I've seen responses across the board about how good or bad 2.6 is.
    But, the autofocus requires so much attention that one may as well use manual focus.
    Might just have been beginners luck, but using manual wasn't as difficult as I thought it was going to be.
    All the best from the hinterland!!

      Hello from Bournemouth... and thank you for the kind comment. I totally agree, I don't think I've used the auto-focus for any video work with the GH5... it's just not reliable. Getting manual focus right can be very satisfying once you get used to a lens... do it enough and it almost falls into focus without you thinking about it!!! None of this stops me loving the GH5... it's a classic camera for video.

    @alantuttphotography Před 4 lety +1

    Highly useful video. Thanks for posting. Did you ever try setting sensitivity low and speed high? I saw the opposite a few times. As I understand it, a low sensitivity should minimize the hunting with small changes in focus, yet a high speed will keep the fast change to something new when it's a definite change.

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  Před 4 lety

      I spent hours trying everything I could... it would have made a very long and boring video if I hadn't cut most of it !!! On my camera it felt like the speed was literally how fast the focus moved... so you could slow the pulsing down to almost nothing with a slow speed. The sensitivity looked like it changed how often (per second?) it checked the focus, set that to locked-on and it wouldn't pulse so often. The end result was you can get rid of the pulsing but then it doesn't track the focus! The biggest problem was you'd find a compromise between the two... think you'd nailed it... and then find it wouldn't repeat. It performed different every time!

I used a bigger zone than what I would normally do. I also used HD. In 4K the auto focus was unusable in this situation. Almost everyone is live streaming in HD instead of 4K. I've had a GH5 since it was first released and have always thought the autofocus is WAY behind Sony and like you mentioned you might find the best setting for certain situation but then when you're in that situation again sometime the best setting isn't good. This proves the GH5's autofocus has no consistency so the same settings don't work exactly the same in the same situations multiple times. It's probably the worst autofocus i've ever experienced, my last camera was a Pentax K70 which absolutely annhilated the GH5 for autofocus and also image quality including lack of noise too.

      @@extrashot I'd sday it's not even close to being the perfct camera, for one thing the GH5 has a lot more noise/grain than Sony and other cameras. Hell Panasonic even use noise reduction at ISO100. Another thing is the analogue to digital converters in the camera for the microphone input are absolutely rubbish. I found this out when I tried connecting my dj mixer 's booth output to the GH5 mic input to record a dj mix. My dj mixer is a top quality Allen & Heath Xone PX5 which has absolutely excellent sound quality. But although the recorded video on the GH5 was excellent the sound from the mic input was crap. Even using the hot shoe mounted XLR connectors is rubbish too. My Samsung tablet recorded better audio via it's 4-pole jack socket than the GH5. Another thing is I used to have Pentax K70 which absolutely annhilated the GH5 for photo image quality. Less noise, better clarity and detail, much better dynamic range.

      It looks like the GH5 has already been dropping in price... certainly in the UK. There are some great deals to be had, some of which include lenses! (I've already seen some for less that £1,000). It's still an amazing camera for video... Might be worth seeing what happens at the beginning of next year? I've no clue about the GH6, or even if there will be one! I do wish you luck and enjoy making the videos! 👍

    That was great thanks. Wanted to ask. I have both Cameras but one is going back. Do you have the same philosophy when it comes to the S1H or is S1H a different enough animal to say no... it's better on the S1H. I've watched many of your video's and I'm a fan of you style.

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  Před 4 lety

      Thanks SUTV... I thought that AF on the S1H seemed better to me... although in theory, it can't be as it uses the same system. I've wondered if the larger sensor changes the contrast detection performance, or physically larger photo sites makes a difference?... maybe it was wishful thinking but I'm convinced it's noticeably better. We need to get both cameras together on a common test.... as long as the results are repeatable !!!
      Take care.

      @@extrashot Thanks for getting back to me. After the news of the Canon EOS R5 was announced I made a call to turn in my S1H and consider the R5 this summer. So I'm with the GH5 now and getting to know it. Did you know there is very little info about GH5 or I should say the "new" GH5 with 2.6 update. I've pounded the payment for days trying to find out many things including LUMINESCENCE LEVELS. All manuals and info docs are from years past. No where anywhere can I find out what is the proper levels for 2.6 version shooting in `10bit 4:22 Intra. This and many other things. Do you happen to know? Thank You.

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  Před 4 lety

      @@sutv6754 Have the luminance levels changed with firmware? I thought the choice of basic range was still the same.. ie 0-255, 16,235 or 16,255. Obviously, if you're shooting 10bit 4:2:2 V-Log-L then you can only use 0-255. If you're talking about the gamma range, then the problem is each picture profile is slightly different, (apart from 709 like, which is obviously standard gamma). VLOG-L gamma curve maps the following brightness levels to the following IRE levels:
      0% reflectance (black): 7.3 IRE

      18% reflectance (middle gray): 42 IRE
      90% reflectance (white): 61 IRE
      Absolute white: 80 IRE
      With V-Log-L nothing can go above 80IRE.... all your dynamic range is within that curve.

      @@extrashot Hmm For some reason I thought they had changed. Most tutorials out there are from 2017 or 18. When I watched them I was hearing Luminance level numbers that were not in my camera. But I could very well have just been confused. By the way, the one guy who is very popular Matt Haapoja says the V log on GH5 is worthless and just crap. He seems to think it's garbage. I very much want to get it but he seems to have a lot of experience. Has your V log experience been good with it? I returned my S1H and man oh man am I missing the dynamic range but I gonna make the best of it with the GH5 until I get another big boy this summer. Maybe the Canon. Going to try your auto focus settings now. Your the best. Thanks again. Tom

      @@sutv6754 Hi Tom, I've got the V-Log on the GH5, but I must admit, I've only really used it when the GH5 is a 'B' camera to something else. Even then, it's when somebody with more skills than me is going to match them in a grade! Obviously, it's only useful if you're shooting 10bit 4:2:2, but the flexibility in the edit can be a help if you have to match say a Sony or Canon camera. Personally, when shooting for myself, I prefer to use a custom profile that gets very close to what I need out of the camera. Again, with 10bit 4:2:2 I find that gives me plenty to play with in the edit for the normal tweaks. I'm not a major fan of LOG in general... I know it can provide a bit more DR and flexibility.... but I like the workflow of getting it close in camera with lights and exposure if possible... and I don't have the talent of a professional colourist... now RAW however.... that's a whole different thing !!!

      @@n9nrc810 Hi... I've just checked on my v2.6 and you're right... the peaking works fine on MF and AFS (it turns off while you press the button but comes back as soon as you release) but there's no peaking on AFF or constant AF. The option to turn it on during AFS is now in the peaking settings - maybe it was that they were referring to in the release notes? I'd never noticed that before... I suppose I'd never missed peaking when using autofocus? Still - everyday is a school day !!!

      That would be my guess too... it's a totally different market to the S1H... well until the S1 drops to about £2k... but then you've still got the cost of those L-Mount lenses!!!

    What kind of professional has a client over his/her shoulder? Cinematographer? Does he/she use autofocus in te first place? What kind of footage is it bad for? That would be informative. Wedding? Sports? Wildlife?

    • @extrashot
      @extrashot  Před 4 lety

      It depends on the client... and sometimes the Director is your client! I've worked with many producers who prefer to stand right behind you and watch from the camera's perspective... even after you go to the trouble of setting up a nice large monitor. It can be a pain... often because they are in the way. There was one famous TV director who used to like steering the camera with his hands on your shoulders... difficult. If the autofocus is unreliable... it's bad for everything, simply because you can't rely on it to work. You can't do a wedding if it's going to suddenly go off hunting at a key moment.
