  • In this 47th installment, Jimmy takes a look at the Monoprice Indio Cali Classic guitar from the folks at Monoprice. This is the “least expensive” guitar Jimmy has ever reviewed on the channel.
    Designed as a “Strat Style” guitar, the Monoprice Indio Classic comes in different colors, and is available on Monoprice.com.

    As owner of Monprice strat AND telecaster. I cherish them both for their quality. It's mid June 2021, I've had both for years. They both needed attention as you outlined, touch ups that a sincere guitar enthusiast can perform by self. No need for paid luthier. These are very good value worth more than their price.

      @@JimmyStewart1 Yep, I ordered 2 and both arrived great, and then also tried a few Players series from Fender extensively after. I found sharp tuning issues, misaligned tuners, etc. that should be addressed in a near $800 guitar (after tax). I still am interested in Fender but not sure if it's worth paying the premium for as a non-gigging person...

    I was so happy with the Indio OS 30 that I went and bought the Cali Classic. I am still amazed at the value considering my second guitar was a Fender Squire Bullet that I bought used in 1986 for $150 and it was not nearly as nice as the Cali Classic. It totally sounds like a strat to me, which is not really my preferred guitar, but for $89 including a bag it's an amazing bargain. Now I can achieve Hendrix type tones that I just cannot achieve through my tele. Thanks again for the review!!!!! Rock on, Jimmy!!!!

    Hi Jimmy. Nice sounding 'strat'. All positions sound on the button. Basswood is an excellent wood. Lots of high end guitars use it. Leo said in an interview that if basswood had been easily available he would have used it for strats and teles. I would install a mini toggle in one tone control hole, to get the all important bridge/neck sound of a tele. I've done that for several of my strats. I prefer flipping a toggle as I play instead of a push/pull knob. Also allows one tone pot for all pickups. I have a Glarry strat that had one HBer at the bridge. Added a P90 at the neck (11.00 usd). Great sounding and playing. Same hook on the headstock. Guitar was 69.usd too. Different labor rates, super volume production very little advertising, and a host of other advantages allow these prices. Nearly all importers like Monoprice, order the next batch of runs, sometimes with minor changes, and presto, on the way! These factories have modern equipment and know this industry as well as anyone. I know you understand all this better than I do, just stating for new players that may not know.Thanks for this demo! Have a great turkey day!

It feels like a regular full sized Fender Stratocaster. The tuners are quality and the bridge looks like a Wilkinson 6 screw vintage tremolo with modern block saddles. The fit and finish are excellent and what really blew my mind was how the Sunburst actually had a fade to it and the Gig Bag is an excellent quality. Yes, it was setup on arrival. The trem was just a bit “tight”, so after the demo, I adjusted it just slightly to my preference. I always change out strings as well, but I try to demo a new guitar “right out of the box” but the fret ends prevented me from doing that on this one. Neck, intonation everything else was fine. Pretty amazing considering the price. What I really like is the neck, and the pups have got a very good “Strat” tone to them. Body finish was flawless and a pretty decent gig bag included!

    I have two of those, but older models. Both were under $80 and I think the first one was maybe $70 or so. That one was white, like yours, but it had a rosewood board. It came perfectly set up with spot-on intonation. The second, bought last year, was the blue burst model with a maple board. However, that one came horribly set up. The earlier model had a much cheaper and thinner gig bag then the second one. I agree for the money they are good guitars and I would order more from Monoprice but I don't see anything I really want. Btw. the tuners on both guitars are among the best of my cheaper guitars. Or, I have the gauge and it's a 12-inch radius best I can determine, definitely not a 9.5-incher.

      Hey, thanks for stopping in Louis. Seems the price fluctuates a bit on these, much like their amps. Catch them at the right time. Of course, price tends to go up over time too. I thought about the blue burst, but my “real” Strat is blue so....I really like the white/white with maple board! Yes, tuners are holding well, just a few loose posts on arrival. The gig bag is quite nice now. I could tell by the “feel” that the neck is not a 9.5 radius and it felt like a 12...thanks for the confirmation!

      @JimmyStewart1  Před rokem

      Hi Angel…thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, I still have the Cali Classic and still believe it’s one of the best “budget” Strats for the price out there. Mine came with some pretty serious fret sprout, but that was easily remedied and the guitar plays great. I have done NO MODS to it…just a setup to my preferences. The pickups are good…you get some nice Stratty quack…pots and tuners work well. The beauty with the Monoprice is you can mod it to your heart’s content if you wish, but out of the box it does a decent job. They are also routed with a “swimming pool” route, so just about any combination of pickups can be installed without a lot of routing work needed. I have not had it out on stage with a wall of Marshall’s, but in the studio it handles gain with no issues. Hope that helps….🎸👍

      @@JimmyStewart1 well, you got lucky. It looks like they made one and you bought it -- I can't find one anywhere on the internet. For the price, I'm looking at that P90 "j-master" offset from monoprice. As much as I liked the Cali, I have a Jackson and can't really justify another "Strat," what I have been missing is 60s jangle. I figure if I spend some stimulus money on another guitar, it will give UPS something to do.
