- In this 93rd installment, Jimmy takes a trip down the boardwalk, as he reviews and demonstrates the Monoprice Indio Boardwalk guitar from the good folks at Monoprice! The Boardwalk is Monoprice’s 335 version, and is one of their “HIGHEND” guitars. At $249 regular price, this is one of their most “expensive” inexpensive guitars! Jimmy compares this a bit with both one of his Firefly 338’s and with his “Billy Bob” too…So with this, Jimmy’s collection of Monoprice guitars should be complete….😎

The pups are a bit “hot” for a semi-hollow in my opinion, but backing them off a bit and lowering should do the trick for your style I would think. Appreciate your stopping in to the channel and hope to see you around more! Again, congrats and enjoy! 👍

They're releasing a new 66 DLX Plus, also, in a new burst color. I have the gold top already and it's phenomenal so I plan on buying the newest burst, as well. Can't wait until they get some in stock! I was planning on buying the Boardwalk in classic red but they out that new 66 DLX Plus on their website last week so that changed plans up lol.
What color is that one? The natural maple? It looks a bit different on the website. I was considering the charcoal & red but the new 66 DLX Plus changed that. They are D'addario strings. My 66 DLX also came with a bone nut. Frets were leveled and rounded ends. I couldn't believe how well it was set up when I got it. It was better than most Gibsons 🤣. Funny that a company selling $250 guitars can set them up but Gibson, who sells $5k guitars, can't. Every $250 guitar is set up by a professional luthier in the US. THAT'S why they have D'addario strings. My 66 DLX still has scratchy pots after a year. It never went away even with deoxit and contact cleaner. They'll stay scratchy. I also replaced my bridge with an SD 59 model. And replaced the switch with Switchcraft and the jack with a PureTone Jack.
I believe their guitars are all made by Yeou Chern Enterprises and/or World Sound Music, according to the import customs paperwork I found in my searching last week. That one appears to be from World Sound Music according to the Serial number format of WSMxxxxxx.xxxx. I emailed World Sound and asked them if that was their serial number and they confirmed that it IS their serial number so it was made by WSM, who I'm almost certain is a part of Yeou Chern Enterprises. Actually, they'd have to be considering the customs paperwork states the guitars are from YC.

I have a number of LP’s already, and to be honest one of my least favorite style guitars (except for a nice JR with a single P90) so I decided to not get one….at least for now!! 😎

I think the BURST is best looking guitars out of the 3 colors. I'm probably being choosy but I want a guitar that turns my top color wise when I buy one. I don't care for the quilted scheme on their Idle Wood acoustic guitar.

I agree with you your Billy-Bob does have stronger resonance, when buying a semi acoustic I went for one with good electronics and pickups I like as they are a pain to swap out, I chose the Epiphone Casino in natural finish, I went to the guitar store for some new patch cables and leads and tried out a Dot and a Casino and came home with the Casino and got a discount on it also, it was a used model but was and is in mint condition, there was a brand new one but it had some issues with the binding in the cut-away so I got an excellent guitar for very little money.

Nice 5 ply binding! The only 335 I have that has 5 ply is the Epiphone Sheraton Pro II. It is a very nice guitar and so is your guitar Jimmy. It sounds great and seems like a quality instrument. 👌

The Boardwalk is the nicest looking of the three 335 style guitars there. I like the slimmer f-holes. It did have a nice unplugged resonance, I was quite surprised when you started strumming it. :)

Hey Jimmy! Good to see you back, here on a Friday night, and with another cool axe. I dig this Monoprice Guitar. Seems like those guys are putting out some pretty cool guitars these days. And I gotta tell you... I LOVE semi-hollow body guitars. Love the vibe and the range of sounds you can get with most of them. Still really loving that Green Grote Semi you've got there too.

Nice assessment so far Jimmy. Interested in hearing your thoughts after you set it up to your playing preferences. I have both the boardwalk and the firefly 338. IMO the boardwalk is an overall higher quality guitar with a better feel and better (non-microphonic) pickups. Looking forward to a shootout video between them!

Thanks man..I was not going to do any “outro” as the frets were pretty gritty, and the guitar would play SO MUCH BETTER with a setup, but decided to do it anyway. Having just got it, it was tough for me to find a tone quickly with humbuckers, as you know, I prefer P90’s and other single coils, so I was trying to tame them a bit, but still having a bit of snot to them…it was ok I guess….not nearly my favorite outro, but thanks anyway! 😎
Once it’s setup, I am sure playability will go from good to “wow” and hopefully that will also come through in my playing and sound once I am a bit more use to it.

My Retro T looked great until I checked the bottom and saw it had been obviously dropped before shipping - no holes in the box. They get it back on Tue. just checked and it's OOS. So I don't know if they held one for my return or not, I hope so. As you said at the beginning - If it's on sale, buy it - they sell out quick every time!

@@JimmyStewart1 Vw guitar is straight as an arrow. I changed the strings and polished the frets. Plays amazingly good. Got it with original box and all the original accessories, complete with seatbelt guitar strap from 2006. It still looks new and had plastic on the guards! It was promoted by John Mayer and Slash. Ok..yeah, now I got it! They use to give them out when you bought a new car! I actually played one. They had a little amp thing built into the car as I recall that you could use, right? They were showing them at the dealer when my wife bought her new Mazda Speed 3 (it was a Mazda/VW dealership) in 06…

Thanks so much Danny…appreciate it. When I first started the channel, I would skip the “unboxing” mostly because it I though it took to much time from the review/demo of the guitar. The more I thought about it, the more I thought that it should be included for a number of reasons, including those you mention. I think it important to see how manufacturers package their instruments, and I also find it fun with a chance to inject a bit of humor when I can….😎
The Monoprice LP copy (the 66) is the one model I don’t have….hmmm

My wife already thinks my hobby is to expensive lol. Your right though I'm loving my P-90 and want one with the Jazzmaster😁

I was a bit taken back when opening up this guitar…it’s drop dead beautiful. Once I get it setup, it’s going to play beautifully as well, though right out of the box it was pretty darn good. You should have your wife subscribe to the channel, so she can see and curse me daily. 😆

To answer your question, yes the Boardwalk is holding up like the day I bought it and is a great value at the current sale price! I am almost tempted to grab another, but I really don’t need another 335 style guitar 🤣
Billy Bob was louder than the other two. You can change the volume wiring two independent. I would have found it extremely disappointing to have for parts grinding out-of-the-box like that even at $250 or especially at $250 when cheaper guitars don't do that. I like the colour very much and the pickups in it sound really good. I think it could be made a good guitar

That's odd. My 66 DLX Plus Goldtop came with alnico 5s. Wonder why they didn't put them in that, also? Were you playing through the Stage Right 15w that's sitting there? What's the neck like on that? My 66 is FAT! Over 0.950" at 1st fret and over 1.14" at the 12th! I absolutely love it! I don't have exact specs because it had strings on it and I was using a vernier caliper and couldn't get it all the way on so I took measurements that are almost full thickness. Likely another couple thou thick at the most.
Thanks for watching and commenting JC..the neck is pretty flat…not fat…very 335ish. They state on the Monoprice web site that they used “proprietary ceramic humbuckers” on this model, so not as hot as what came on your DLX 66. I agree with the decision, as I would prefer a bit more lower output. Yes, this was done using the Monoprice 15w amp, and the Vintage 30 Celestion extension cab sitting to the right of it.
I cant be tempted by your sorcery, I just my last guitar on Wednesday (after my last, last guitar, last time you reviewed the OS20), a Grote Jazz (red) single P90. But it sure is pretty. Was that a hint of "The Needle and the Damage Done "

Received a new Black Charcoal Boardwalk 2/7/2022. Altho I am eventually happy with the guitar, it took much experience and work to make it playable. First, the top has no flame, just grey on black. It was not set-up or even playable at all out of the box. Fret work completely unfinished, with sprout along the entire neck, rough unpolished fret wire, rough and scratchy fingerboard. All of this was fixable however, but the idea that it was professionally set-up by a Luthier as advertized is simply not true. The tuners were awful; Immediately replaced with Grover rotomatics which I happen to have a spare set. Otherwise an upgrade purchase would be necessary. The tailpiece and bridge are cheap but work fine. A few small imperfections found nothing outrageous.
Having said all this, after caring for the frets, neck, tuners and set-up, the guitar plays beautifully, and the instrument is gorgeous. I would buy it again, but buyer beware - if I didn't have the experience to make the adjustments described I wouldn't have a playable guitar. Paid $249 with shipping So Califonia to New York City in eight days. Good Luck if you buy one just be prepared to possibly make adjustments and definitely upgrade the tuners.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting AJ…yeah, it seems to me that although they say these are “professionally setup” prior to shipment, I also think this is a bit “hit or miss”. Mine was setup pretty well, and didn’t need a lot of work, but others have had issues similar to what you state. As far as the “flame” it is pretty subtle, but it is there on mine. Others who have bought the “charcoal” finish say the same as you…I think the finish looks great, but very little flaming comes through in that finish it appears. Glad to hear you were able to get it sorted out!

I have a number of 335 style guitars, and a Gibson 335 S in the past. Fit and finish is quite good, especially for the $$…
Do you run a dehumidifier for all that gear?.
Hi Dean…Yes, I run a large room dehumidifier in the summer months, and a humidifier in the heating season. Try to keep as close to 45-55% humidity as possible.
8.5 or 9 lbs?!? Jesus. My Indio 66 DLX Plus is only 7.7 lbs. That's insane for a semi-hollow body to weigh more. My pots are still scratchy after a year. Deoxit didn't fix anything. Neither did electrical contact cleaner. It's likely they won't clean up even after a year like mine.

It’s considerably heavier than my FF 338 or my Grote 335 copies.
The pots actually cleaned themselves up after a bit of use. Didn’t have to shoot them with anything actually. Thought I was going to have to, but they cleaned up in a couple days with use.

In my “shootout” with this guitar, along with the Grote and the Firefly, I did weigh them all, and low and behold, the Monoprice came in at 8lbs, 5 ounces….

Hi Linda…thanks for watching and commenting! Are you looking at electric or acoustic, acoustic/electric? Full hollow body or semi-hollow? Short scale limits the selection even more. Let me know with more specifics and I can give you a better idea of what is out there that may fit your needs! 👍

Yes, normally because you don’t have a wooden center bock coming down the body. I would think that a Thinline style Tele would be a good option for you. They are lightweight, smaller bodies (though they are not 24” short scale, but standard Fender 25.5” scale). Thinner necks then that of a Jazz style guitar normally. I have done a lot of reviews here on the channel on Thinline Tele’s. IYV on Amazon has a couple of good models. I believe Grote also has a Thinline Tele style on Amazon as well. I don’t have a Grote Thinline, but I own their Jazz box, SG, and 335 style semi-hollow and all have been good. As far as body size, of the 335 styles I have, the Boardwalk is the smallest, but it’s also the heavier of the 3….
