This first video of 2018 features a full Wolf Moon rising on January 1 and Amtrak's few remaining P40DC's; the 800 series. These locomotives were captured coming through Bernalillo, NM and starts with 821 and the Veteran's Heritage Unit 42.
Next is AMTK 48 and 818. This was the first time I've seen 818.
Next, 821 returns leading AMTK 119.
We've had a dry spell with no Heritage Units recently but 822 returned at the end of December 2017. I captured this at the Bernalillo 550 RailRunner station where I happened to meet Chris who was on an 822 chase up to La Junta. Check out his videos at / @cameramanrailfan
A few days later 822 returned being led by AMTK 186.
As you've noticed in my videos, trespassers are a common sight in Bernalillo. The tracks run through the middle of town and there are no convenient ways to get from one side to the other except to cross the right of way. After a couple fatalities, trains run through here at restricted speed. The engineers are great about blowing the horns through town and most people quickly get off the tracks. Unfortunately there are a few that play chicken with the train and the crew has no choice but to go into emergency braking. After that happens, the equipment has to be checked out before the train can proceed. The end of this video has the audio for an incident that happened on January 4, 2018. This crew also had a close call with another trespasser shortly before arriving in Bernalillo. The background video was shot along the Rio Grande river, about a mile west of the railroad tracks.

Great shot as always Tom! I've always enjoyed the shots of scenery, wildlife or anything of interest you've employed in you video's.
It's too bad that there are so many trespassers, there should be a move a foot to address this issue; that might include new infrastructure.

Thanks Larry. I'm glad you like the background scenery that I include! I agree that the trespasser issue needs to be dealt with. Probably fencing along the right of way and a pedestrian bridge at the middle of town would probably solve most of it.

Bernalillo should do what DC did for the section of the CSX Met Sub adjacent to Rhode Island Ave metro station and build a pedestrian bridge over the tracks.

It bothers me to see kids my age walking along the right of way, especially taking pictures. We all love a good trackside picture, but I feel like it is a dumb idea to go on the tracks and take pictures like that. If you are going to, I think it's their responsibilty to know the schedule and have someone on the lookout for an unexpected freight.

    • @YardLimit

The kids in this video weren't taking pictures, they were just going from one side of town to the other, but your point is well taken.

Since this video was made, there is now a dedicated pedestrian crossing at this spot. It's also messed up some of the approaches for shooting video so I don't hang out here much, but I think it's working. Trains now move through here at 75 mph instead of 40.

it is hard to tell the difference of a p40 from a p42 but back when the p40 was introduced to amtrak, it had a single windshield and strobe lights above the windshields. they also had a cab on the rear end too. amtrak removed those features and split the windshield into two windows once they restored the p40s.

Aside from the numbering, I can't tell any difference.

I’m pretty sure the P40 dose not have a back door,
      But the P42 dose.

    • @FFred-us9tw
      @FFred-us9tw Před 3 lety

The P40 had the same windshield as the P42s do. It was never a single windshield. The rear “cab” wasn’t a cab. Just an extra window and what’s known as a “Hostlers station”. It was to facilitate easier backup moves. But they were removed as were the terribly ineffective strobe lights.

Why doesn't the railroad put in a few footbridges or foot crossing across the right of way? It would likely reduce the amount of trespassing.

    • @YardLimit
