  • Prior to the New Testament days of Jesus, the Temple of God had been destroyed during the invasion of Jerusalem by the Babylonians. We know this because God told the prophet Jeremiah that it would come to pass as divine judgment on His people. In light of that, how should we interpret the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in 70 A.D.? Was that an act of divine judgment? Was there a prophet to foretell that event? In this message entitled “The Destruction of Jerusalem,” Dr. Sproul introduces us to one of the best attested historical events in ancient history as it relates to redemptive history.
This is the 7th in a series of messages by Dr. Sproul on the last days. See other videos in the series: • The Last Days Accordin...

And the reason we don’t have a biblical account of the destruction of Jerusalem and its temple is because the Bible was written before it’s destruction (pre 70 AD).

      Really?
We don't have record of how did Apostle Peter die in the Bible. What's the reason for that?
There are many many prophecies that foretold stuff and we can only see the record of their fulfilment in the history. Not in the Bible. Your reasoning is flawed.

@@luboshcamber1992 When Peter reached old age, Jesus said, he would stretch out his hands and be led to where he did not want to go (v. 18). The phrase “stretch out your hands” was a common way of alluding to crucifixion in the ancient world, so we see here a prediction that Peter would eventually be martyred by means of crucifixion. Later tradition holds that Peter was crucified upside down during the reign of Nero sometime in the early to mid-60s AD. And though we don’t have a biblical account of Peter’s death, my point to my previous comment was the dating of the book of Revelation.

Not necessarily. When it was destroyed most people in Jerusalem were all killed with the exception of those that ran away to the mountains especially those who had converted to christianity. Christian were also more focused of spreading the gospel to other parts of the world as they knew the temples destruction was something that had been predicted by jesus christ.

And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

did also. "these are the days of vengeance that all things that were written

So what I am getting for studying the book of revelation is that from a historical standpoint there are many things described in this book, which was not in the Bible at first, had already happened throughout the first century. The events line up with the prophets in the OT. What I also come to understand is the “thousand year reign” is the word thousand can mean an infinite amount of time or a long time. I do not think thousand was literal here I think it might have been mistranslated into a specific measurement of time. Which could be wrong. In my mind I am going to assume the prophesy of revelation is mostly complete and we exist in the “church age” or the “thousand year reign” for long period or era of time. So our prophesy may be revelation 20+.

I would like to add the following from book VI and chapter 5 of the Josephus account which Sproul may have been remiss to omit:
"Thus there was a star, resembling a sword, which stood over the city: and a comet, that continued a whole year. (15) Thus also before the Jews rebellion, and before those commotions which preceded the war, when the people were come in great crowds to the feast of unleavened bread, on the eighth day of the month Xanthicus, [Nisan,] (16) and at the ninth hour of the night, so great a light shone round the altar, and the holy house, that it appeared to be bright day time. Which light lasted for half an hour. This light seemed to be a good sign to the unskilful: but was so interpreted by the sacred scribes, as to portend those events that followed immediately upon it."
    and also this:
"But what is still more terrible; there was one Jesus, the son of Ananus, a plebeian, and an husbandman, who, four years before the war began; and at a time when the city was in very great peace and prosperity; came to that feast whereon it is our custom for every one to make tabernacles to God in the temple, (17) began on a sudden to cry aloud, “A voice from the east; a voice from the west; a voice from the four winds; a voice against Jerusalem, and the holy house; a voice against the bridegrooms, and the brides; and a voice against this whole people.” This was his cry, as he went about by day and by night, in all the lanes of the city. However certain of the most eminent among the populace had great indignation at this dire cry of his; and took up the man, and gave him a great number of severe stripes. Yet did not he either say any thing for himself, or any thing peculiar to those that chastised him: but still went on with the same words which he cried before. Hereupon our rulers, supposing, as the case proved to be, that this was a sort of divine fury in the man; brought him to the Roman procurator. Where he was whipped till his bones were laid bare. Yet he did not make any supplication for himself, nor shed any tears: but turning his voice to the most lamentable tone possible, at every stroke of the whip his answer was, “Woe, woe to Jerusalem.”"

Christians shouldn't see non-Christian Jews as sort of allies of Christians. If we want to know what God thinks about non-Christian Judaism, we only have to look at what He did through the Romans in 70 AD.
Rejecting Jesus as Messiah is one of the worst sins that a person can commit. We should love all Jews, but we need to understand clearly that non-believing Jews are against Jesus.
In Luke 11:23 the Lord says: “Anyone who is not with me is against me, and anyone who does not gather with me scatters.” This includes non-Christian Jews.

@@Toneytc I agree with you that we shouldn't think that Jews today are due punishment for what their ancestors did 2000 years ago.
However, we need to understand clearly that according to the Bible one of the worst sins that a person can commit is to reject Jesus. And given that Jesus is first of all the Jewish Messiah and Saviour, and given that a large majority of Jews today reject him, non-Christian Jews today are in grave sin and are enemies of God.
We also need to be careful not to confuse criticising Jews for their sins with antisemitism. Antisemitism is an attitude of hatred or condescension towards Jews, which Christians should wholeheartedly reject. But criticising someone with a view to their repentance is an attitude of love.

@Samaria • 36 years ago There are actually many evangelicals who are highly critical of many policies of the state of Israel.
Very cautiously, I do think Zionism itself is biblical. In Luke 21:24 Jesus says that 'Jerusalem will be trampled by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.'
This seems to suggest that it is the will of God for the Jews to regain control of Jerusalem, and I think this verse was probably fulfilled in 1967 in the Six Day War.
However, many Christians confuse the principle of Zionism with support for policies of the Israeli government, and that is a huge mistake.

Many do not understand that the last days have come and gone. Scripture (KJV) teaches three timelines: the time past, the last days, and the latter times (end times). On the latter timeline lies a 7-year period called the latter days. Scripture informs us that the latter timeline begins when the church collectively comes to the full (a mindset) to believe another gospel, and deceives many to think they are something they are not, rapture ready. Just to let you know the last days came to an end on Sept. 29, 2008 Elul 29; that at sunset of Elul 29, the latter timeline began (Sept. 30 Tishri 1). Fourteen years from the beginning of the latter timeline, the latter days began at sunset of Sept. 25/26, 2022 Tishri 1 and ends at sunset of Sept. 09, 2029 Elul 29. Rapture comes after the first of two tribulations (tribulation and great tribulation), which comes after the Latter Rain (second outpouring of the Holy Spirit). After the tribulation of those days (both tribulations of the latter days) then comes His wrath, which is reserved for the ungodly and the disobedient children. God is Three Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and these Three are one, amen.

Daniel describes times of Gentiles in statue of Nebuchadnezzar, it’s not Jerusalem, that rock not hewn by hands of men, that destroys before Kingdom, but the last Gentile empire. So to claim all had been fulfilled in 70 AD, doesn’t make sense.
My subjective opinion, this is what happens when you ignore Tanakh and only use New Testament for interpretation.
Short summary of several verses, that the Lord uses in the Gospels and ignore volumes of the chapters that the same Jesus spoke through Patriarchs, Moses, Prophets and Psalms on this topic, is more than inadequate.
All GOD’s prophets always spoke of near limited fulfillment of certain event, but projecting the prophecy to the greater and distant future fulfillment.
This was a way prophets fulfill the Torah requirement, to distinguish between true and false prophets.
Thus first century was a lesser fulfillment of the greater future fulfilment of the 70th week of Daniel, to end the times of Gentiles and finish promised redemption of Daniels people, Israel.
Church age is not a Gentile age, it’s a mystery age of Jews and Gentiles in a new Body of the Messiah and is no way, shape and form connected to any generation of prophecy, including earthly ministry of the LORD Yeshua the Messiah. There is no church replacing Israel, but some Gentiles are grafted in to the promises made to the fathers.
PS. Romans did not invade Palestine, but invaded by then reunited kingdom of Israel, which took place during Assyrian and Babylonian invasions. Palestine did not exist until Romans attached this name out of spite to the land of Israel in 135 AD. It was, is and always be the Land God gave Israel, even when we rebel against Him.

Yes but this wasn’t it. The fall of Jerusalem was Gods punishment on His people for rejecting their Messiah. Deuteronomy 18: 18I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. 19And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him.
Luke 19: 41Now as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, 42saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you and close you in on every side, 44and level you, and your children within you, to the ground; and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
Because you did not know the time of your visitation!
Why would God punish any other generation than the one guilty of murdering the messiah? Most of Revelation has to be about the fall of Jerusalem because it had no have been written before ad 70 because it’s not mentioned in the Bible. And a key to understanding when Revelation was written in Revelation 1:1, these things which must shortly take place. Look up the Greek word for shortly. Shortly is the perfect English equivalent. Then use a Strong’s concordance and look up every instance where “shortly” is mentioned. “ I plan on coming to you shortly. Send Timothy to me shortly. It’s certainly not 2000 years and Paul has to mean before he dies

Israel has made and is still making some bad choices concerning Father God and His Son Jesus and that is not going to work out too well for them. In the last few years leading up to Jesus' return, 2/3 of them will be killed according to their prophet Zechariah but those that are left will see Jesus standing on the Mount of Olives and the scars in His hands and sides will prove they had been wrong. MacArthur has it right (as usual). Daniel's 70th Week is yet unfulfilled. That 7 years begins with a peace treaty allowing the Jews to rebuild the temple one last time (before the Millennial Kingdom). The events of 70 AD hardly fulfilled the prophecy of The Revelation, which was written about 20 years later.

This to me is somewhat rediculous. Jesus was prophecying the same as the OT prophets and spoke of short term and long term fulfillments. Did the tribes see him and mourn? Nonsense, if they had, there would be an account besides Josephus..
I would also add that shouldn't we see this account littered throughout the first centuries church writings? Why did they hold to a future coming of Jesus?

@@ManuGeorge777 Kinda sounds like you want to prove peter and paul are preaching the same gospel. I’ll go first with a sliver of proof and you can debunk all the evil. Look at what Jesus gave Paul 1 Cor 3:10According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. 11For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
We already know theres a foundation of Jesus Christ according to prophecy and his covenant with Israel. Jesus is already crucified and in heaven. The 12 are still teaching their kingdom of heaven gospel and now Jesus has Paul tell us theres another foundation and Paul laid it. Paul tells us what this foundation is in Rom 16:25-26. 25Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, 26But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:
Jesus has Paul tell us this is Pauls gospel and its the preaching of Jesus Christ according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret since the world began. This eliminates any possibility of a legitimate claim Paul is teaching the same gospel as Peters. Whoever claims this is a liar.
Here’s the bottom line. This gospel Paul is given is 1 Cor 15:1-4 we are saved if we believe Jesus died for all our sins was buried and rose again the third day unless we believed in vain. Believing you aren’t sealed and having to endure to the end is a clear sign you have believed in vain.

4Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, 5you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture,
      “Behold, I lay in Zion
      A chief cornerstone, elect, precious,
And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame.”
7Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who [b]are disobedient,

      Has become the chief cornerstone,”

1For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for you Gentiles- 2if indeed you have heard of the [a]dispensation of the grace of God which was given to me for you, 3how that by revelation He made known to me the mystery (as I have briefly written already, 4by which, when you read, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ), 5which in other ages was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets: 6that the Gentiles should be fellow heirs, of the same body, and partakers of His promise in Christ through the gospel, 7of which I became a minister according to the gift of the grace of God given to me by the effective working of His power.
      - "as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to His holy apostles and prophets"
      - "His holy apostles..."
      - Who are His apostles?
      - This "mystery" was not limited to Paul. The emphasis on who they were sent to, though Peter also preached to Gentiles and Paul preached to Jews.
      - For you to say that Peter and Paul did not preach the same gospel is concerning, because it seems as if you do not understand the gospel if you cannot hear how much in agreement they truly are.
      1 Corinthians 1:10-13
10Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all [d]speak the same thing, and that there be no [e]divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. 11For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are [f]contentions among you. 12Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” 13Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?
      - This discourse on sectarianism is continued in 1 Corinthians 3, where Paul calls those engaging in that behavior carnal, and then says: "no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ." Amen. Peter preached Christ crucified and resurrected, how one can read through Acts or Peter's epistles and miss that is astounding.
