  • Decided to have a go at painting a Cooper SK2000 helmet. Because these helmets are made with HDPE plastic, there are some extra steps needed to give the best possible outcome. Follow along with me step by step as I give it a go and hope I can get this bucket to match a kit I plan on wearing very soon.
Thanks to my buddy Bona Hallikainen for the knowledge he shared with me (even though I didn't do everything the way he said to). Follow Bona on Instagram at: / bonahallikainencustoms

I had camera issues with this video which lead to almost unusable audio. Thank fully I was able to get it cleaned up by using Auphonic and put this video out. For my info on Auphonic, please visit my affiliate link at: auphonic.com/features?source=coopergoalie

I think it looks fantastic! Nobody expects an SK2000 to look new and from a distance, you cant see the blemeshes. I'd wear that helmet in a heartbeat!

Cool to see the process start to finish. I hope to see it one day, fully padded and finished!

That's a great look at the process. Bona is a legend. I understand that you are skeptical about the finish, I really like the end result.

Are you going to finish it and use it for a different kit? I like the color. It would be cool to see with padding, bumpers and a mask. This is an excellent how-to video Charles. Thanks for making it.

Yeah I’m going to complete the build on it and use at some point. It didn’t turn out ‘bad’ it just didn’t turn out how I thought the color would be.

Spraying the clear coat with an over the counter can product doesn’t seem to be the way to go - my own experience. Others say they take their helmets to autobody shops for the professional look. Do you agree?

Yes, typically you hear of people taking these to a buddy at a body shop or whatever, but I wanted to show that it CAN be done at home. The key to painting HDPE is the prep work (which I rushed thru and didn't fine tune enough for my liking). As for the products (adhesion promoter, paint, clear) as long as you stay within a brand lineup, they should work together very well. In the case of this project, it actually worked very nicely...I just should have used a helmet with less nicks and scratches (and done better at my prep abrasion) to meet my own expectations.

We’re our toughest critic - I think it looks great! How many coats of clear do you spray? Also, I apply vinyl lettering so I need a thick base of clear coat. I think I applied about 5-7 coats but could still feel the edges of the vinyl. My wife suggested “Modge Poge” it worked but was messy/streaky

@@oldguyinthenet-to7iv without rewatching it, i think I did 3 or 4 clear coats. No vinyl under my clear or yeah, i'd have to go thicker for sure.
