- We have upgraded our kayak sail forestay and downhaul systems. Even though our competition is far behind us, we still strive to advance and make our rigs even better. Our new forestay and downhual system makes our rigs easier to rig, more solid, more efficient and easier to handle.
Here are the specific advantages of this upgrade.
1. The forestay line is shorter whith makes for less stretch and a more solid rig. This is great for big wind conditions.
2 The downhaul force can be adjusted indpendently of the forestay.
3 The downhaul pulls the sail aft to spread the sail out a bit more for a better airfoil shape and effectively increasing the area of the sail.
4 The boom and sail are better integrated which gives the sail a much greater tendency to be properly aligned to the wind for maxiumum propulsion. This will automatically address some sail trim issues.
5 It is easier to release the sail for even faster sail changes. You can change from one size sail to another very quickly.
6 The sail is easier to manage when the sail and rig are off the kayak.

I just replied to the email you sent to us earlier today. Its basically the same rigging job as it is on a kayak except you need to use a cross member, seat, or small deck available on a canoe to rig the mast base on. You can also install your own cross member, or you can buy a cross member from Falcon Sails.

Nice upgrade, thanks. I’m still deciding if I should buy the 1 sq meter or the I.4 m sail for my SE inflatable Kayak 420 explorer. You did suggest going with the 1.4 but I will be using this kayak mostly in Sardinia Italy Mediterranean coastline. This area has good 10 to 18 regularly, I could get overpowered. What size sail are using in this video? Thanks and any advice will be greatly appreciated.
This is an easy choice. The 1.4 is the way to go. You want to find the sail that will hit the sweet spot most often. Each size sails has its pros and cons.
On a larger more stable kayak the 1.4 is going to be your favorite sail. If you owned all 3 sizes of sails, you would choose the 1.4 more than the other sails combined. You can lower the sail in seconds if you need to an depower by letting the sheet line out, releasing the boom vang, and out haul. And last but lot lest, if you have a 1.4 square meter sail, you can order a 1.1 or a 1.0 sail only and get it at half price with our current special. That means if you buy a 1.4 square meter sail with a complete rigging kit, you can have $80 off the price on a 1.0 or a 1.1 sail only. The 1.0 square meter sail only options start at $140, so you can add it to the 1.4 complete rigging kit for just $60. It is kind of a no brainer.

Hello, I have a question, why are the shrouds so high? above the boom and not below the boom like other competitive systems, this way they do not cross the boom for the aft winds.

You can put the standing line anchor points up high, or down low.
The problem with putting them down so low is, it creates a lot of highly levered force action on all the hardware. Your gets smashed with a lot of down force, your mast base gets torqued with a lot of lateral force, the standing lines get pulled on hard. So you stress all hardware including you mast and the mast will have a decent chance of bending or breaking.
Without a deep knowledge of kayak sailing you would think, letting your sail weathervane is a good idea, but it is actually a very poor idea for proper and safe depowering.

It is a long winded answer but in the end, it will help you see how higher standing line anchor points is a good thing.

In the end there is no doubt, you want to have the standing lines up higher.
Low standing line anchor points to make the boom go forward sounds good in theory until you are stuck with all the problems this creates.
So that is why Falcon Sails standing line anchor points are a bit higher than they are on some of the not so well thought out home made rigs.

We are getting ready to post a install video for one of my personal favorite new demo kayaks. It is a Valley Canoe Products Etain 17.5
Can the whole system be easily removed? How long would that take? Or can it only just be folded down? Also, my kayak (wilderness tsunami 140) already has a rudder. Would that help at all? Or is it better to steer with weight shift and the paddles?
You can drop a Falcon Sail in seconds. Just as fast as it was raised in this video.
And yes you can remove a Falcon Sail from your kayak and roll it up for long term storage, in about 1 minute at the take out, or any time you want to remove it from your kayak.
All you have to do is unclip a few things, and take lines out of cleats, and loosen 1 finger tight screw on the mast base.
Your Tsunami 140, is an ideal kayak for kayak sailing. All kayaks are great for kayak sailing, but the Tsunami 140 is great.

Rudders are not required, but are handy to have. A lot of people sail kayaks without rudders, but as you get into longer boats they are more and more handy to have.
Rudders make the learning curve to a little smoother.

The sail material creases. Is that permanent or does it uncrease.
A good crisp sail material like what we use will crease for sure.
These creases will loosen up with time. Once a sail is nicely broken in, it will be softer, but still really low stretch and strong.
Our Dacron cloth is German made. It is really nice stuff.
I often carry my kayak in a j-rack on top for short distances up to 70 mph. So I assume I would have to remove all rigging so it wouldn’t flap in the wind or come off. What is the set up and tear down time for such an outing? Thanks
It takes just a minute to put the sail on at the launch site, and less than than to remove it. Here is a not so well done video that shows how it is done.

I have started to not take my sail off. If it is a shorter drive I secure it as best I can and just go home with it like that. Though you have to make sure nothing is flapping around if you will be going a long ways at a high speed.
In any case it does not take long to rig the sail at the launch site and derigging it at the take out is even faster.
