I'm Pete, I play guitar! Having fun with metal guitar doing everything from modern metal, extended range 7 strings and 8 strings to thrash metal on a good old 6 string. Riffs in the styles of other bands, shredding and lots of fun with metal music!

These Metalcore riffs could also work very well in Thrash Metal
I've always said the same thing, the heavier Metalcore riffs are very similar to Thrash. A lot of Modern Thrash bands blend genres, they tend to draw from Death Metal, Black Metal, Metalcore, Hardcore/Punk, and even some Doom Metal. There's some incredible newer Thrash Metal bands out there!!
my thoughts exactly! very solid examples
@@bighomiestevethemetalhead That's because thrash and thrash adjacent bands once helped culminate in those styles. There's a reason you see "thrash Till Death!" assholes, because the genre really was that great at one point
@@cherryfroggo ummm, what's wrong with saying "Thrash 'Till Death"? There are a lot of diehard Thrash Metal fans out there and I'm one of them, I listen to multiple other genres as well, everyone has their preferences. What's the problem?
@@bighomiestevethemetalhead I also tacked on the word "assholes" to specifically describe the ones that are gatekeepy jerks. The ones who think all metal after thrash isn't metal. Asshole elitists are a biproduct of any genre
I have always enjoyed both, but thrash is how I got into metal and will always hold a dear place in my heart. Great riffing!
Me too, and thanks! :)
I could say the same.
Same here !
It's quite the opposite for me although I started with Metallica and Megadeth but what really got me into Metal was stuff like Parkway Drive,As I Lay Dying and Killswith to name a few
Yup, me too!
I have a thing for both. On one hand, the beautifully rhythmic chugging of Thrash Metal, on the other the melodic intensity of Metalcore! If I had to choose, though, I'd probably stick to Thrash for the sheer aggressiveness.
Amazing stuff, Pete!
Haha, thanks! Yeah, I think I’d go with Thrash but Metalcore is really cool too. It also has a lot of Thrash influences so that helps :)
if you love both, there's always thrash-fluenced metalcore in AILD, Phinehas, BFMV and Trivium which is thrash with metalcore elements IMO
I never get tired of the 2000s melodic core riffs
The best metalcore sound period
@@playdiscgolf1546 true.
Modern stuff doesn’t sound the same.
@@SlyHikari03tbh the modern stuff isn't even metalcore.
@@abc4781 fair
the riffs blend so well into each other, great job as always \m/
Thanks! :)
At the end of the day they're both fusion genres between metal and punk, the stylistic musings are similar by design.
Yep, there’s definitely a lot of similarities between the two styles :)
@@peteplaysmusic Trivium has entered the chat.
Thrash definitely is nearer and dearer to my heart than most other metal styles. A lot of my early guitar journey featured a LOT of stuff from Metallica's first 4 albums.
Me too! :)
@@peteplaysmusic not half obvious
0:01 Battery
0:18 Angel Of Death
2:30 Blackened
2:54 Dyers Eve
yeah i thought it sounded a little like snatches of metallica's kill em all and justice for all albums

Thrash Metal or Metalcore, who wins? :)
Thrash rules!
Metalcore forever
Thrash is what I got into metal with as a teenager. Metallica, megadeth, slayer, etc... But as metalcore came about and bands like Killswitch, as I lay dying, machinehead, etc started coming out I kinda fell in love with that genre too. To me metalcore is kinda what thrash directly evolved into as younger artists hit the scene. At least from most of the varieties of metal we have, metalcore draws soooo many parallels with thrash you can't ignore it. Your video reeeeeally illustrate the key differences AND the many similarities those 2 genres really have. Also, fkn awesome riffing man!
Machine Head is groove metal.
Machine head is Groove metal and even thrash metal...
I think it’s cause thrash and metalcore both have heavy roots in punk music
Thrash riff 3 just has to be the best for blending both Blackened and Dyers Eve esque riffs
Haha, thanks! :)
Second was caught in a mosh + mad house and First one had angel of death breakdown
Turns out...the combination of the two is better than just one by itself!!! Well done, Pete who plays music!
When I write songs, I never wonder what style it is! You can mix them all or just stay with one. Who gives a shit. People will like it or not. The end product is what counts. You are demonstrating it very well in this video.
That's what I love with metal in general, you can pretty much blend every music style whilst still sounding great.
Cheers from France! 🍻
I honestly think both are good and dont care that much for the versus part, but hearing two styles flowing into each other so nicely in a song is really cool, great video pete!
Thanks! :)
agreed 100%
Thrash, melodic death metal and metalcore riffs are my favourite. Mix them all in one amazing style 🤤🤘🏻
Haha! It shall be call ‘Melodethrashcore’ Metal :)
@@peteplaysmusic yes please!
Funny you say that, Trivium is exactly that, their name even means "the place where three roads meet" referring to that specific three-way fusion
Isn't that just Skeletonwitch
@@outofboundsbro yes you nailed it!
That metalcore harmony riff at the ending was best. You are sick riffing machine Pete!
I loved both! Your riffs are absolutely monstrous man!!
Cool riffs, dude!!!! I've really enjoyed so much. Great HB guitar sound!!!! KEEP ON DOING IT!!!
Beautiful quality as always! Thank you for another one 💜🤘🏻
Thanks for watching! :)
Played together like that it’s metal perfection. Wicked sick shredding man!! Beautiful.
This video is gonna get a spot on my playlist with how well the different sections feed into each other 😄 Not to mention how hard it rocks. Truly great musicianship here.
BOTH!! Awesome playing as always Pete. Keep crushing \m/ \m/
Thanks for watching! :)
It’s so weird. I’ve been a ‘core kid’ for the last 15 years and never even gave thrash a second listen, but recently thrash has just scratched an itch that I never knew I had. Guess a lot changes when you turn 30. 😅 Great vid, and great riffage!
Haha, that's interesting. I kinda feel I'm going in the opposite direction. I always loved Thrash but grew up around the Core stuff too and I like it but, I just like Thrash more I guess. I think more interesting stuff is happening with Metalcore in recent years though :)
Music attracts moods and gets attracted as well.
If only you're not a one trick pony, you like music of different bands and genres, naturally.
@@peteplaysmusic True true! Metalcore is getting so ‘proggy’ now though - definitely loads of blurred lines in the heavier genres at the moment. In my mind it seems like thrash is making a bit of a comeback in the underground, but that could also just be because I’ve had Sylosis on repeat for the last few weeks. The irony is obviously that the metal guys and the core guys have always had beef, but there are so many similarities between thrash and metalcore playing styles. 😂
@@jkobain Definitely true!
Same same.
Been digging your thrash riffs, man
Thanks! Pleased you like it, love me some Thrash :)
That was some really great playing man. Killer
Thanks so much! Love me some all down picking Thrash and Metalcore :)
@@peteplaysmusic same here man.
He's so talented, I wish he had a band, the album would smash. His riffs are amazing. From the EMG 85/81 comparison to this ti many others
Haha, thanks! I don’t have a band or a proper album but I do release a lot the songs from my videos and put the on Spotify etc. Link is in the description if you’re interested in checking them out :)
That absolutley brun my brain of, that was INSANE! instant abo
I do love me a good ol bit of thrash, awesome as always pete 🤘🏼😈🤘🏼
Haha, thanks! Love me some Thrash too :)
Thrash metal was my introduction to metal, and now I also enjoy metalcore.
Both have different qualities and I like them both.
Great riffing Pete!
Thanks! :)
Having them mashed together is.. PERFECT
THRASH CORE
Kinda like bullet for my valentine. Scream Aim and Fire has so much Thrash in it
Thrashcore is already a thing in hardcore punk which is where the word thrash was originally used but they later called it core to differentiate from thrash metal that became a thing in the 80's.
Metalcore itself was influenced by thrash metal and crossover thrash of you check out 90's metalcore.
Melodic metalcore also has thrash influences. Bullet For My Valentine, Trivium, God Forbid, Shadows Fall just to name a few.
@@SorceressWitch you're the historian of metal!! You rock!

@@peteplaysmusic maybe some nu-metal riffs at some point?
Nice references in the riffs Pete… 🤘🏽

I love that he’s using Harley Benton guitars, it’s awesome! I need to get myself some
Like last weeks video, I think the two actually work well together. It would be interesting to see more songs that use different styles to create movement and dynamics.

@@peteplaysmusic, putting me on the spot.... Um, Gothenburg, thrash, djent, and a sprinkle of grunge (Smashing Pumpkins fuzz style). Wait, now I've put you on the spot...

DAMN Pete, this video is FIREEEEE
Haha, thanks! :)
excellent sound, to listen to on the trip
Loved the AJFA riffs pal 👊🏻👊🏻
Man! It's so hard for me to choose what is better. Both have had such an impact on my life.
Great riffs man, just wish there were 1 or 2 more recent styles of metalcore riffs in there
I’ve always been a core-kid so I’m almost “disappointed” that there wasn’t a breakdown riff in here but those chugs in the second riff were still epic
core is so cringe
@@2nd100k the fuck, did you just say that AILD, Trivium, Meshuggah are cringe ?

@Spiritual Abortion That is definitely a modern metalcore breakdown!! Old-school metalcore didn’t have those paused 0’s all over.
It Is fucking great Pete, Thanks buddy It fits a lot 🙏💪🔥🤘
You are truly an inspiration for me to keep plugging away and getting better at guitar. Unfortunately I am fairly new at recording and getting my stuff to actually sound good has been rough lol. I would love for you to hear some of the stuff I've done and get your opinion and possible advice.
That's awesome! My advice is to just keep going, learning and improving as you go so each recording gets better and better! I recommend checking out some of Glenn Frickers recording/mixing tutorials or if have more time check out some of the recording/mixing masterclasses on Creative Live. Thanks! :)
Sometimes when I write music I find myself mixing these two styles. Fast tempo and phrygian scale of thrash metal, and melodic riffs of metalcore.
Metalcore definitely borrows a lot from Thrash so I often end up blending the two styles as well haha :)
Metalcore Riff No1 personal favorite.
Great job!
Thanks! :)
I alway liked the idea of merging the two sub-genre’s, for they both have a unique style that would sound amazing blended together
2:29 actually thought for a second thats was blackened second solo-riff (fast part), but its just similar and urs go different later. Interesting concept!
\m/ Hell yeah! Awesome playing Pete! I was head bangin' the whole 4 minutes If I really have to pick a winner: Thrash by a narrow margin \m/
You play so damn well!! I play since 2 years and I love it!! Of course I must get better ;-) For me Thrash wins \m/
Awesome! :)
It sounds like Thrash all the way to 1:50, when the second Metalcore riff starts. This is obviously not meant as hate, in contrast you made the first three riffs flow perfectly into each other. But I am not sure how well the first Metalcore riff actually represents Metalcore, if at all
You have the best riffs Pete. 👍👍
Haha, thanks so much! Lots of downpicking in these :)
Hahaha. The classic "don't like the placement of the volume knob....REMOVE!" .Amazing playing pete
Fuck yeah, i clicked so fast just to hear your riffs 🤘
Haha thanks! :)
Nice breakdown on part 2 of metalcore
Thanks! :)
2:29 that sounds like blackened riff that is played with solo
That last Metalcore riff is SO AMAZING!!! ❤ 🤘
The thrash riffs sound a lot like Exodus to me, and i love it!
Both fantastic!
Thanks! :)
The riffs blend together so good. Nice job! What's that ex84 like?
Pretty cool, I wish they hadn’t changed the shape though. It’s obviously only a cheap guitar so it’s not on a ESP/LTD or PRS SE level of quality but it’s pretty solid. Sometimes the Harley Bentons need a fret level to get the action as low as I like but this one plays very well. Gonna throw some EMG’s in this at some point too :)
@@peteplaysmusic Sorry for the late reply man, I didn't get the notif. It looks sick and I'm thinking of getting one after I get my fusion III. Tnx for your reply!
I noticed some Angel of Death inspiration on the first thrash riff, and some Blackened and Dyers Eve on the last one.
Haha, yep! Definitely threw in some nods to some songs in these :)
I play in a thrash/metalcore (thrashcore) band and this goes hard
We won by getting to listen that! They really worked together so well. I went to high school in the 80's so thrash was my jam, but I love seeing the different paths younger generations have gone with it.
Hey man..am a new sub.
2 questions.
1) wat camera u using?
2) do u do multiple takes on same camera or do u have multiple cameras on 1 play thru (capturing many angles)
Thanks in advance
Something about thrash for me 😎 can't help but go crazy!!
I think the combination of both metal genres and, of course, with traditional metal riffs(and strong vocalist), is an excellent formula of success
Really interested what you think about the Harley Benton guitars (or anyone else in the comments as a matter of fact) - I've seen them about but not sure whether people have just got them for the lolz or not. I've just ordered a schecter omen elite MS8 and now really want to get a cheap guitar that I can fiddle about with and just generally play music on that isn't usually my "go to"
are these new guitars? those fretboards are super polished and made me imagine all that effort before filming.
Basically Trivium hahaha. Great playing as always!
Thrash will always be special to me, cause it really got me into metal music in general. But metalcore, to me at least, gets everything amazing from thrash while also adding melodic sutff. I'm just in love with this 2000's metalcore!
Also, the last two riffs for both genres, the thrash sounded like your own version of Blackened and Dyers Eve combined, and the metalcore riff reminded me so much of Killswitch Engage, As I Lay Dying and Bullet for my Valentine
I really like metalcore, but I never listened to it before. I think, I should give it a try. Thanks for video!
Listen to Trivium's album Ascendancy and As I Lay Dying's album An Ocean Between Us.
@@SomebodyMeOnceTold thanks for recommendations
Yeah, these bands are really good, i like it so much
@@kosty_705 You're welcome! Glad you like
Not surprised that they work together so well, thrash is a mix of NWOBHM with hardcore punk, hardcore punk evolved into the heavier (beatdown i guess?) hardcore, melodic death metal split off from death metal which split off from thrash, and a combination of heavy hardcore and mdm gave us metalcore. That era of metalcore basically has the same origin story as thrash
they're both so good 👍
metalcore riff 2 was beast, those roswell pickups sound pretty good.
hey, ive noticed you play on a bunch of harley bentons, do you swap pickups and do any other changes? or play them straight fron the box? im planning on getting one someday maybe as a modding project
Some of them need modding a bit yes, but they mostly play good out of the box. The Fusion II in this video has decent pickups but needs a fret level and the EX-84 in this video plays well with a low action but the pickups aren’t that great. I’ll be swapping in some EMG’s at some point. So yes, they’re mostly okay especially as they’re so cheap but some of them do need a little bit of work. Thanks for watching! :)
@@peteplaysmusic ohh okay, ive been wanting to get that explorer for a while, i wouldnt mind changing the pickups if its solidly built, and on top of that it looks dope!
thank you for the reply, keep up the good work Pete!
3:38 Theocracy - The gift of music outro? Sounds quite like it!
If you combine all of these riffs you get bullet for my valentine basically 🤣
The BFMV vibes I got from both styles really put a smile in this old core kid's face.
All good, but that last riff won me over. Some tremonti going on 3:38
did you modify the harley bentons? I keep thinking about getting a 4 string bass (only have my 5 at the moment) and a baritone guitar
I was always fan of thrash since I was 12. I didn't listened to metalcore at all but nice riff in both generes, I enjoyed it.
I would hear your comprarision of melodic death metal and metalcore, as it was strongly influenced by melodeath it could be interesting to hear the differences you would put there.
Anyway what is bridge in your Strat?
Sick, Groove Metal Vs Mathcore next? haha
Haha, maybe? I'm open to suggestions :)
What I liked most about this video: how you combined them into one so it resulted in one harmonious picture.
I like myself a little Thrash Metal, but I like Metalcore better.
This thing can makes everyone headbang👌🤘🔥
Can't turn my back on thrash !
Nicely done.
Thanks! Yeah, thrash is my favourite too.
Pete...absolutely awesome as always! I share the same sentiment as many others. I like both, but I started with Thrash and it'll always sit just above the rest of metal in my heart. Amazing riffs, as always.🤘🤘🤘 Thank you for your continued hard work!
Thank you so much for watching! :)
The seemless transitions between classic riffs in both “genres” is amazing.
That is a very beautiful piece all of it ... i honestly dont care about the style what and where.... it all sounds so complete
I normally lean to thrash metal more but you make `em both appealing
I’m usually more of a Thrash person too. But I like both, there’s just something really cool about Thrash :)
Finally the content i became a patroen for! These riffs were fucking siiiiiiiiiiiiiiick
Thanks for watching and especially for becoming a Patron! Tabs for this will go up in a few days btw :)
Can anyone suggest which bands have similar riffs to first metalcore riff? I fucking love it
I based it on earlier Avenged Sevenfold so I’d recommend them :)
Yo this guy plays for 4 minutes at 200 bpm and his hand is not even tired. Man you are amazing
Thrash has more aggression while metalcore has more melodic elements.
I like the guitar that you did for the thrash parts there.
Thanks! It’s a cheap Harley Benton but it looks a lot like the old ESP MX guitars that James Hetfield uses :)
wow it sounds so like metallica at all, because of your preferences I guess. Sounds great! Can you make a video on "black metal/death metal" difference next time?
I can probably throw some Death Metal in a video, I did a Cannibal Corpse tuned up video a few years ago which was fun :)
@@peteplaysmusic no no man!! 😃 I'm about doing something cannibal or Nile riffs opposite dimmu borgir or darkthrone style

Metalcore its ok untill you reach adulthood and realize Disgorge wasnt just grind noise, it just how life sounds

Wow you're good!
3:38 Rocks my face off. Love this riff!
Nice Harley Bentons 💜
The frets on that EXP like guitar look very tall. Are they, or is it an optical illusion?
Maybe? I’m not sure. The fretboard is kinda reflective so they look pretty tall from some angles. Not sure exactly what gauge fret wire it is but it doesn’t seem much taller than normal :)
Just foun out about a band called Traitor, great teutonic thrash!
