Watch' Why Are We Fat?' here: • Why Are We Fat? | Comp...
Never in all its history has America been so obese. The obesity rates keep climbing. 160 million Americans are severely overweight. Faced with this staggering figure, healthcare professionals are trying to find new, more efficient, and more aggressive treatments for this illness. We meet Casey, one of the few whose weight has become a matter of life and death, and travel to Arizona to see an innovative new academy helping young girls learn healthy habits and slim down.
The rising obesity crisis has given momentum to a new movement: body positivity. Through lucrative social media accounts, popular magazine covers, and even successful ‘Miss Plus’ beauty pageants, overweight Americans are learning to flaunt their curves and love themselves no matter their size.

The poor are fat now because good healthy food is scarce, so you have to have time/money to cook, eat well, and you probably need to be wealthy to 'afford the time' to play sports, exercise, overall have healthy hobbies, whilst those working 2-3 jobs don't.

Good for you. Majority from the 90's on got more fat/obese over time caused by a change in dietary recommendations from mostly meat, eggs, fish, dairy, fat with sides of veg and the odd dessert to mostly veg, grains, legumes, veg oils and fruit. Started I believe because a few US Senators eating way too much rich food had heart attacks and colleagues wanted answers. Plenty of plant based advocates and cereal manufacturers willing to put their hands up and take the funds to produce studies saying what they wanted to hear. The theory being lower calories, plenty of undigestible expelled fibre will 'fix' all issues. Most not enjoying the diet add processed or swapped to processed. This experiment is a massive disaster.

It's very scary. There are 2 reasons I feel are why . The first one is I started taking Uber more . Which ment I'm not walking as much and the second is stress. I know that when I'm financially stressed out I snack more. So not exercising like I was has also added to my stress because I'm not releasing the stress. So I got terrified of putting on to much weight so I started taking the bus at least one to three times a week. STOP telling others it’s okay when it’s clearly not. Live your life as you please but do not push your ideas that are detrimental to health just because it makes you feel better about your self….

As someone who was overweight growing up in my teen years, 270 lbs and size 44, I decided at 15 to make different choices. Over the next 2 years, by doing so I came down to 185 lbs and a size 38. I finally set in at 150-160 and a size 32, and I remain that still at 64. Thankfully on no meds, and no health issues. My problem, like many today, was simply overeating. I could blame my parents for divorcing, the kids for picking on me, or the fast food industry, but the fact was that I simply made bad choices. Don't blame fast food, because they do not force you in to eat, and if you do there are choices that are reasonable. As far as airline travel, if you take up 2 seats then you pay for 2 seats. That is not discrimination, that is fair to the person who only needs one and does not want to share half of what they paid for with you. People today are looking to be a victim, and seeking someone or something to blame. Stop it, just stop it, and make better choices, get up do more activities, and quit looking for someone to blame other than the person in the mirror who has caused the problem.

Dinner: fried ground meat in lard or butter, add some cut up vegetables, a potato that's been cooked a few days ago, or some boiled rice, brown a bit and serve! For snack 2 pieces of fresh fruit. Without even trying I lost weight; I can only do stretching, strengthening and light hand weights due to back and knee issues. I now weigh what I did back in the mid 1980s before having children. Went from 80kg down to 60kg. Waist was 44" and it's now 36". Other than shoes and socks I have to get a whole new wardrobe of clothes. Thankfully I've been able to get a lot of my tops / blouses from the second hand shop.

The doctor wanted to put me on metformin, a statin and see a dietician (which I did - a hospital diabetes dietician in Australia - and she told me I wasn't eating enough carbs and that I would lose muscle; I proved her wrong - I got checked by a exercise physiologist after 1 year). For me it was learning that you can go blind and/or end up on kidney dialysis (I already knew you could lose toes / limbs). My husband ended up on peritoneal dialysis after he contracted Wegeners Granulomatosis. We checked out about both types of dialysis and he decided on PD. Yeah, most people don't stop to consider that they're metabolically unhealthy, and it's gonna take time for their body to start functioning correctly, especially if they're diabetic and their body just stores fat and doesn't hardly use it. You can loose weight quickly on keto, but early weight loss is mostly water weight. Further, if you don't have enough protein, you may loose muscle mass while keeping much of the fat. Once you've alleviated the burden on your insulin for a long enough period of time, you'll start shedding the fat rather than storing it.

this is fascinating. also, i used to be obese, standing at 5ft, 220 lbs. most of the weight gain was from pregnancy and mental health issues. I did not realize how unhealthy i was or looked. all of my labs came back "normal," so i thought i was ok and continued eating. my diet for about 2 years consisted of mcdonalds, sugary coffees, lots of bread and chips. i was also consuming hidden calories/carbs/sugars from drinks, such as kombucha, bananas (25 grams of carbs, PLUS sugar), coconut water (again, a ton of sugar/carbs), oh, and lots of pizza. i was also struggling with severe anxiety and being a new mom. I was diagnosed with prediabetes last year and my reality was put into perspective and i drastically changed my lifestyle and eating habits asap. i lost about 40 lbs with simple eating habits, completely cutting out fast food, processed carbs and alcohol. i incorporated a ton of veggies, protein, healthy fats and got rid of fruit and sugary drinks. my A1C went back to normal and it is now reversed. i also walk every single day, around 10k steps. i still need to lose about 40lbs to get back to my pre pregnancy weight. being overweight isnt cute. it is very unhealthy and can very well lead to negative health consequences and a shorter lifespan. your knees and joints hurt, you have shortness of breath and low stamina. i experienced all of that and more. I had low energy, felt dizzy due to all of the sugar spikes and was fatigued very often. i realized we are not educated on making the correct food choices to benefit our health, lifestyle and lifespan. i work with patients who are diabetic and have lost limbs, have really bad infections due to slow healing, nerve damage and are on dialysis. i think we should be taught how to eat for sustainability, energy and nutritional value, and that a sugary, deep fried food should be as a reward every once in a great while.

I used to be chubby when I was a teenager but lost everything overtime through self educating myself, exercising more and associating with people who share my lifestyle values or I'm doing it all solo either way, I am in CONTROL lol! I know that everyone's' situation is different and that I am not the standard but as some people have said in the comments, you heart is literally the size of your fist (closed), if your overall body weight is 7-10x that size, your heart is working way more than it needs to to keep you alive. Now I’m only 10 lbs away from my goal weight after 3 years of up and down fluctuations in weight, and he is 20lbs away. We’ve been counting calories, eating home cooked meals, and increased our physical activity to make it happen. It’s harder for women to stay consistent in weight loss, due to our monthly energy fluctuations due to our natural hormone cycle. I recommend women to look into the nature of their cycles and learn the amount of physical activity doable in each part of your cycle, because it helps to understand why something that was easy to do one week ago feels impossible this week. I used to beat myself up about my inconsistency in activity, but it all makes sense once you realize how affected you can be by your cycle.

There's honestly no such thing as a healthy restaurant anywhere. I've been to other countries; their restaurant food isn't really any healthier. They just don't eat out as often, or eat as much of it.
I didn't lose weight until I learned to cook at home - and asked my doctor for help. I used phentermine, the older weight loss drug, as an appetite suppressant. I lost about a hundred pounds, and kept it off for about seven years now. I had to track calories strictly - if you eat high calorie density foods, it won't help, and you HAVE to eat mostly protein to not lose your muscle tone . It's only an option if you're young and your heart is still in good shape, though, since it's essentially speed. I'm not surprised more and more people are resorting to surgery. (Now with semaglutide, there are other options that are less dangerous to your heart. Just more dangerous to your wallet.)
One final note: The whole 95% of diets fail thing? That was one diet, in the 1960s, and it wasn't a diet. It was a healthy eating pamphlet doctors were handing out. OF COURSE IT DIDN'T DO ANYTHING. Serious weight loss interventions under medical supervision have a much higher rate of success. If you have insurance in the US, talk to your doctor. Ask for help!

I’ve spent the last few days in Stockholm, Sweden and haven’t seen a single person that was morbidly obese. Of course, food is to blame but if the US encouraged its citizens to walk or bike when they’re in the cities, and if US cities were designed better for pedestrians and bikes, obesity rates wouldn’t be as high. Now maybe I’m naive, because I’m fortunate enough to live in Montreal (aka one of the most walkable cities in North America) but honestly… if Americans could walk or bike instead of drive for a 5 minutes commute, y’all would be much healthier.

No need to go as far to compare people to packages though. The same airlines will charge based on weight for pets, which are live beings. I joked that I would put my dog on a diet before our flight (which obviously wouldn't help because he isn't fat, he's just big), because for him to travel in a cargo section I paid almost as much ($800) as I paid for my own ticket ($1000), and this was based on his weight

I'll never forget when I visited a burger place at a mall there once, asking for the sizes for a lemonade. They showed me the cups for sizes. I was looking at the 'Small, Medium, Large' size cups and my eyes bugged out, thinking holy cow, the 'Small' cups are like bigger than a LARGE size anywhere else at home! I'd seen it advertised in other places too and on commercials, but seeing it in person.... and seeing little kids with those big jug-like cups... At that burger place, just at them seeing my shocked expression alone, the employees told me that they KNEW right away that I wasn't from the USA, LOL!
