Lyrics:
Sittin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' come
Watching the ships roll in
And then I watch 'em roll away again, yeah
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time
I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the 'Frisco bay
'Cause I've had nothing to live for
And look like nothin's gonna come my way
So I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time
Look like nothing's gonna change
Everything still remains the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same, yes
Sittin' here resting my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
It's two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make this dock my home
Now, I'm just gonna sit at the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Oooo-wee, sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

This song was finished up in the studio just 3 days before Redding was killed in a plane crash. What a parting gift from the king of soul.
That's why the last verse is whistling he was supposed to come back and add a verse.

Yes - a parting gift from Otis after his shocking death - so melancholy yet so much strength & determination despite all
It was my junior year in college. I had just signed on the dotted line to commit myself to Navy flight school and six years of active duty, right at the height of the Vietnam war. I signed the contract with the Navy recruiter while in the student center at college. After we shook hands, I walked away and sat down at a table alone. Now, I have to go home and tell my parents what I have done. This song came on the jukebox. It was September 14, 1968

Thanks Mark, I guess in these surreal times it’s good to have nice memories, even though they may be tinged with sadness, whoever you may have lost is always with you 💙🙏
I understand brother. I lost my brother a few years ago...hurts..

This reminds me of sitting by the harbour wall in Singapore 1968, watching the ships as a teenager. Very nostalgic , always made me long for being back home every time I heard it. A masterpiece.
I am 16 years old as of now, I was on a trip to Turkey with my parents. My grandma had terminal cancer when we departed but she was doing fine 'till then. Midway through our vacation we got a call from my dad's sister, Grandma was dying. I felt disgusted with myself 'why did I leave when my gramps could die any moment?'. I ran out of the room to the 'dock of the bay', I put this song on repeat as it was already the song that comforted me with the whole situation going on. After about ten minutes sitting on the edge of the pier staring into the pitch black sea a cat came to me. It sought my attention and sat on my lap. At that exact moment my mom texted me saying grandma had passed away. I couldn't be more at peace with myself. Thank you Otis
I'm glad you enjoyed this gem of a song. It got you through that rough patch, and I hope you're doing better man. Love bro🤙
Godspeed
That’s an inspiring story thank you for sharing.

its songs of birds and aromatic flowers
The pagoda’s bells ring out through the sacred grounds

Beautiful towers and vast halls highlight a beauteous flock
Heaven and Earth are illumined, enhancing the scene
With steps soft and graceful, they whirl sleeves long
Twisting, turning, spreading, closing-these flying faeries
Aerials and swallow jumps that best the greatest dancers
Accompanied by music, the dance itself becomes melodic
With a beauty elevated still more by their grace

The Wait of a Thousand Autumns
Heaven’s faeries float down, dancing with elegance
Beautiful and agile, with coiffures simply divine
Moving to and fro, they exude a myriad charms
With but a smiling glance backwards,
they put the world’s flowers to shame
Spinning, turning, whirling, twirling,
they land their aerial leaps ever so lightly
Stepping so slowly, they come to a halt,
yet the beauty does not stop there
The music and dance call out to your true nature
For this one performance you’ve awaited

My husband loved this song. Two weeks before he passed away he kept playing this song. He loved the ocean ❤ and I remember him whistling at the end of this song.
We are soooo lucky that Otis recorded this just a days before he passed away.
I have heard this my whole life and just found out about his untimely death.
Just imagine, if it was complete. Otis whistles the 3rd verse, intent on returning to the studio to fill in the lyrics. A plane crash cuts that short, and the "whistling verse" becomes a part of his legacy.

It's strange how as a youth, we remember songs like this with much fondness. Then we live a life and realize, as kids, we didn't have a clue what the lyrics were saying. As an adult, we hear it with much different ears. It's such an incredibly sad song.
MissDistarr60 Well said.
Yes! My mother loved this song and Otis Redding. Every time I hear this song it takes me back to Saturday morning, cleaning the house with my four, brothers laughing, dancing and cutting up! GOOD OL DAYS!!!:-)

Is is an incapable truth for anyone's who hits the elderly stage for sure!
It was such a soothing, peaceful song, back then. Now, it's sad. So sad.
Cynthia Nicola Exactly:( In our youth we wear "Rose Colored Glasses" and our view of the world is so incredibly different. We grow up and lose those glasses and our perception of the world drastically changes.....as does the music. Not usually a sad thing, but in this case it certainly is.
I never get tired of listening to this song. It's a classic.
Otis remains the man after all these years… he was and will be my friend sitting on the dock of the bay. Life taken to soon, God bless him.
I showed my best friend this song when we were 15 years old. He loved it. We listened to it driving all the time. He died 8 years ago and I will never hear this song the same way again. I was just up in Sausalito, first time in years, and I never fail to think of this Otis Redding classic when I'm there. "The soul singer Otis Redding had come to San Francisco in August of 1967 for a six-night gig at Basin Street West. According to Jonathan Gould, a Redding biographer, the rock promoter Bill Graham offered Redding the use of his houseboat in Sausalito, on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge. ... While relaxing on the boat, Redding is said to have strummed a guitar and come up with these words." (The California Sun) What a tragedy. He had so much more to give the world.

Fun fact: Otis Redding wrote this song in late 1967 after relaxing from his rock concerts in San Francisco --they were a smashing success. Redding spent time in Sausalito and decided to write some lines while enjoying his leisure watching the boats. When he got back to Memphis, he took his lines and recorded "Sitting at the Dock of the Bay." Three days later, he died in a plane crash, the first to ever receive a posthumous #1 on the billboards.

This beautiful soul - full song brings back many Good Memories of good times to person very alone, old and tired as Mama Earth. But my buddy 'Sonny B.' told me to Keep Looking Forward, Always --C.J. So I do!!
"I've had nothing to live for. Looked like nothing's gonna come my way."
I hear you, Otis. :(
Na man you got everything to live for
I just. Love oldies & sitting on the Dock of the bay..that's for my sister Glenda she loved that song..R . I . P.......SISTER"S.
It hurts when I still hear that part of the song
@@boxingbull523 I am surprised I get up each morning
@@eddygsmusicworld1708 whys that?
To think that this song was technically never completed is simply amazing because it's perfect the way it is. It's so visceral and you can feel his emotions pouring through every word and note he sings.
His guitarist Steve Cropper finished the record with overdubs, mixing. Somewhere on CZcams there's a video of him talking about it.
Did you know he made this song 2 days before he passed? The whistle is a placeholder for him to finish😞
To think the whistling was to be removed on the next recording that never came to be. Rest In Peace Otis.
@@shabbaranks248 makes sense now as to why the song was so short…..never knew that.
@@giovanna722Yeah, but Otis was not there anymore to complete his vocals, unfortunately. Even his whistling is on point.
This was played by the rock stations back in the 70's and 80's, and everybody loved it! I still look it up when I am needing some good music to listen to. RIP Otis Redding.
My grandpa favorite song and I understand why now 40 years 😢❤❤❤
In 2022, still loving this song. Timeless...

This song helps me decompress when I’m stressed. I probably listen to it too often lol.
Gen Z here to approve that this song is indeed a timeless masterpiece.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👌🏼
agree i once felt burnt out and i listened to this and after that i felt completly calm
This song is a soul classic. It was Otis Redding' s last recording just 3 days before he was killed in that horrible plane crash. Otis Redding was only 26 years old. He is missed by many all over the world.
Thank you Sherlock.
It's an all time music classic too

It’s 2024 and songs suddenly pop into my head. I grew up listening to this amazing music. I think as we age it makes us quite nostalgic for our teen and younger years. And to think back on family and friends that we have lost. ❤ RIP Otis
“Sitting here resting my bones and this loneliness won’t leave me alone. Yes. 2000 miles I roam just to make this dock my home”
This is a song that i can sit listening too on a river bank just fishing as the whole world passes by in its madness and fast pace craziness. This song is just....peaceful.
Totally agree
People don't appreciate the real songs that have a lot of meaning.

How genuinely sweet. Thanks
#1 for the late Great Otis Redding 😊
The assistant instructor at my trade school introduced me to Otis Redding. I’d like to thank her for it. Having grown up entirely on Country and Classic Rock, I had no idea who he was until then. And I’m one who likes all kinds of music genres. Otis is now one of my all time favorite old school musicians.
you won't find a better song to wake up to in the morning, believe me
I heard that.
Unless it's Try a Little Tenderness, my favorite Otis song.
Absolutely.
Such a depressing song. How would you wake up into that?
@Teo Vokes 66 look into the lyrics and say again what you just wrote.
