  • Aside from just about everything, what kind of technology should librarians know how to use? This go-round, I'm answering the question based on my own experiences as a librarian and general information professional.

    As a newly graduated librarian, I was a little nervous you were going to mention stuff I didn't know, like maybe my whole degree was a sham, but I know all of it WHEW

    I had to keep backtracking and re-listening to stuff you said because your doggo is adorable. Their face at 4:19 and their H E A V Y sigh at 6:07 is a mood that I can relate to.
    Now that I've gotten all my praise for your dog out of the way, I'm currently studying to be a Library Information Technician and this video is super-helpful! Mayhaps I shall subscribe and see what else you have to share! Thank you!

    This is very interesting. I'm going into Information Sciences this fall and I'm not a technology oriented person whatsoever (I hail from a literature background), but this video has been very helpful in cementing some of the stuff I've started reading over the summer in preparation. Thank you!!

    Thank you so much for answering my questions. This was incredibly helpful and informative. I'm gonna check out Codeacademy. Just wanted to let you know that here in New York the public libraries have Sierra and a little bit upstate they use Evergreen.

    Adorable pooch!
    Thanks so much for all these amazing, funny, and helpful videos! I'm preparing to get a MLIS degree and your channel has been a great resource for exploring how I should tackle it.

    Another great video! So excited to start my MLIS program in a few weeks. Gonna try to get a leg up on this stuff before then. Pat the pupper for me!

    Yeah, I was a bit sad that we talked very little about ILS/OPAC/LMS in any of my courses at SLAIS. Fortunately I have a lot of experience with Point of Sale systems in retail jobs and an ILS is very similar. The only course that addressed some of the nuts and bolts everyday library work was collection development/management.

    Aww, your fuzzy assistant! What a good helper you've got there. (I did pay attention to you talking, too, I swear :-D). Tech is another place where there's an overlap in the theming, if not the specifics, with the publishing side. I was also on the technology & design track, so I got more of it than the folks in the business & marketing or editorial tracks. We had to learn a bit of HTML + CSS, discussed and experimented with CMS, and got into a (very) little bit of the use of and coding for a few book building softwares.

    I personally found that the tech I learned about in school versus what I ended up using in my actual workplace was VASTLY different. A lot of my MLIS was theoretical and nothing was very hands-on, but ultimately, you learn on the job. So far every place I've worked in since has required knowledge of different softwares/programs/tools etc. 100% agree with the ones you listed!

    I don't remember learning about an integrated library system for my MLIS degree. However, Fulton County Library System (Atlanta] uses SirsiDynix Workflows. I have a new coworker who worked for Miami-Dade Library and he said that they used Polaris, which he finds better.

    Learn cataloging in school. Even if you never have to catalog, you'll feel so accomplished and in interviews you can be all, yeah, I took a semester of cataloging as an elective, nbd. Been a librarian for about 10 years, learned html in school, never used it in my actual career.

    Do you know if there are any legal regulations for the records management (retention and disposition) of small museums/archives (not associated with government) in BC? Been having a hard time finding this info online.

    • @StacksFacts
      @StacksFacts  Před 5 lety +2

      Good question! You could reach out the the folks at UBC's iSchool, which has a focus specifically on archival studies. Otherwise, off the top of my head I can tell you that if they are nonprofits as recognized by the BC Societies Act, it does explicitly lay out record keeping requirements that are available for free online.

    html - hyper text markup language
    css - take different components of a website and make them look a certain way

    Are databases the de facto method library website catalogue work by?.

    • @StacksFacts
      @StacksFacts  Před 5 lety +3

      Yes, but depending on where you are you won't see the database itself. Rather, you will work with the interface of the ILS or LMS, which is what makes the database usable.

      @@StacksFactsIf you are able to respond...What degree would be beneficial to pair with a BLIS or a humanities degree if the ultimate goal is MLIS? Computer science? Comp Info Systems? Management information systems? Any advice would be appreciated.

      I think that GVPL uses Symphony, but in my job classification, I am not told anything and don't interact with the software outside of being a patron, so I could be wrong.
