I wanted to add my experience and gratitude to the long list. I've had a 1992 940 Turbo wagon since 1999, and over the last 10 years have had an issue of warm engine stalling on starting the engine. For example, driving to a store, parking in the lot and coming out after shopping to a car that refuses to stay started. It cranks, starts and then idles too low and stalls. Eventually, something pressurizes (I'm guessing here) and then it stops stalling and runs perfectly. I've tried everything, including the dealer and an independent mechanic, neither of which diagnosed the real problem. I saw this tutorial and thought I'd give it a try. IT WORKED! After 10+ years of not being sure if I'm going to get stuck somewhere because I can't keep the car started, I finally have confidence to let the kids take the car for their errands. Thank you Robert!!! (FYI, I also cleaned the MAF with the spray cleaner, and replaced the air filter while I was doing that)
Robert is my hero .My 98 v70 had a really bad idle I tried all sorts of things like cleaning the throttle body fitting new spark cables .then I asked Robert. He told me that Volvos do not like after market bits so I removed the new crank sensor I had fitted that come from China and put back the old one and all my problems went away. So thank you Robert. Ken from New Zealand
Trouble shooting old school style!! Love it, keeps exercising the brain. All the 740's I've seen here all have cracked turning lights. If I do find one, I'll save it for you. By the way, thanks for your years of videos boosting my confidence to do repairs myself. This weekend I will be fixing my wife's 05 Murano. She was complaining of a little rattling from the front wheels. I lifted her car and discovered too much play on both front wheels. I will be replacing both endlinks, control arms, and tie rods because the old ones were torn and loose. Thanks for all your help.
A lot of the time you only need to take out the valve and clean it with intake cleaner and reinstall. That will fix a lot of idle issues, thanks for the video it helped me locate and fix.
I appreciate you walking through this and eventually pointing out where the IAC valve is. I suspect that's what's possibly wrong with mine. 96' Volvo 850 non turbo.. My cold start takes about 6 seconds, and it doesn't idle nicely (a little low), but it starts beautiful when the engine is warm and it idles quite nice. What are your thoughts, broken engine temp sensor or broken fuell pressure regulator? Thanks in advance!

I've got the same car and the same problem. It's kind of funny how prevalent it is, and how I still haven't found a simple solution to it. It seems it has multiple possible causes, hence the elusive solution. You can try cleaning the throttle body, cleaning the Mass Airflow Sensor, replacing the Idle Air Valve like Robert did, and try finding the temp sensor he was talking about at the end of the video and see if that needs to be replaced. Me personally, I've only cleaned my throttle body so far....so I'm still trying to figure this one out. Btw, I only have this problem on cold mornings on a cold start. When it's warm it idles great. Here's hoping we figure it out!

Hi Robert. I love your videos. They've saved my butt a lot of times. I was wondering if you'd consider making a video on replacing the belts of a B230F engine, preferably the configuration with the ower steering below the AC compressor. There are currently no videos for belt replacement on any later year redblock 240's. Mine is a 1988 245DL and I am finding it impossible to change the belts because of the second adjustment arm (the rear one) on the AC compressor. The nut is nearly impossible to get a wrench on even with the MAF/air conduit removed. I got it on twice out of about 25 attempts and then could only barely turn it. Someone told me to just cut it then put the new one on partially, then bump the starter and it would go on by itself, but I'm a novice mechanic and too chicken to try it. If you have any advice I'd super appreciate it. And, I think a video on later 240 belt replacement would get a lot of hits since I can't find any out there anywhere. Thanks.

Would please like your guidance Robert, 88 240 volvo with 2.2 idle air control valve (inlet and outlet straight through, not at right angle). Idles very high with electrical connector. I have been driving with electric harness off and its much slower, but still to high (most noticeable when placed in reverse with a hard jerk). When the engine is cold idles correctly until it warms up a bit. I checked for vacuum leak with starter fluid. No leak. Cleaned the throttle body and IAC. Ohm tested IAC and coolant temp sensor, both passed. Checked for voltage at harness, ok. Lastly I disconnected battery, installed a new IAC valve (from Amazon) And no change. Does the body of IAC have to be grounded, as I have temporarily removed the bracket for easier testing, removal and installation.? It is a 3 terminal IAC. Car starts well and accelerates, smooth on highway. Is there a step that I am missing with re-installation of IAC valve, or any other advice? Appreciate some guidance. Thank you.
Never mind robert, you have a spare air tickover valve. You did confuse me when you said it was on automatic when no throttle was being used, i would have expected a fixed mixture for tickover and dynamic when your driving, but i may have mis heard you like i do ha ha :-)) Wonder what voltage the temp sensor is supposed to give, shame there is no data :-(
Robert, my 1996 Volvo 960 has a problem after driving a short distance , and stopped at a light or something, the idle slowws down and the engine just dies. then other times, when driving slowly, ( usually in trafic ) then the Engine wants to die and when I depress the accelerator, the engine sort of "coughs" abd almost like a "backfire, and then sort of "wakes up" and "takes off" again. I took it to AUTOZONE and they plugged in the computer test, and it came up that the "air pump" ( whatever that is ) has some kind of problem, ( Code 40 or 44 , or possibly a sensor or something ) in connection with the "Air pump" Robert, have you got any advice for me, as I have a friend that can help me fix it, if we have an Idea what is wrong. ( I have emailed you before, when you helped me with the "mas-airflow sensor" ) Morgan Sorensen
You need the actual P error code. The air pump usually does not effect the car running. Sounds like the MAF is acting up again. Where'd you get that sensor?
@@RobertDIY I think the guy at AUTOZONE looked up the code number on his phone ( internet ?) and said that the Air pump was what the code revealed, but that .....IF the Air pump was the Problem area, that it could also include related issues to the Air pump, such as"shut off valve", "control valve", and or "check valve"
Hi Robert and thank you for your informative videos. I have replaced the IAC on my 1982 B21FT. Problem was, and still is after replacement, erratic rev surge while idling, or otherwise while driving with gears engaged (manual transmission). Going up to 3000 revs, and staying there. Only way to get it back to normal is several blows with the hammer against the idle valve. Like I said, it is very erratic, but quite a nuisance when it occurs. I don't see any triggering pattern. Goes great otherwise. Do you have any idea what the cause to this bad behaviour might be? Kind regards Michael
Hi again Robert. Found the solution now. The replaced Idle valve was also an Bosch original part, purportedly NOS. It worked just as bad, maybe because of age, rust, or whatever. It cost me 240 bucks. I got an aftermarked product now for 80 bucks, and this one works excellently. No more annoying rev surges. Thank you for being with me, though. Michael
hey robert great videos, everytime i'm at autozone they can't find parts, i have a 98 v70 turbo wagon, what size engine spec shoulld i tell them or whatever, once they found a part but it was under an s70? p.s. are you a traveling mechanic at all? out in the midwest near chicago?
Robert, so you don't suggest cleaning the existing idle air control valve? How do you know the replacement used idle air control valve from the junk yard is still good? It could still be the problem. Anyways, i am researching if my idle air control valve could be cleaned out....like how we clean the MAF sensor or throttle body. Thanks.

mr robert, i have a 1988 volvo 740 gle. when I start the car I have to give it a little gas for it to warm up and run properly. because if I didn't it would spit and sputter and eventually die. but after giving it a little gas for maybe five or ten seconds the car would run like a champ. now the issue that I'm having is the car spitting and sputtering under acceleration. it's almost like my power is coming on and off the more gas I give it the more it flutters and sputters. do you have any advice on how I should troubleshoot my problem?
concerning my 89 240 with poor 8mpg it was recently tuned.I do remember about a month ago the engine would barely run with it bogging and stalling. I checked for vacuum leaks using propane and starting fluid and there was no change in idle speed. I installed a used 02 sensor and it checked good before I put it in. The
My old (like '87 old) Volvo 740 suddenly started revving at about 2000 (if the tach is to be believed) and just roars in park or neutral. I've been told that city driving gumming up the idle air control is the likely culprit, and that in an old car such as in this, it should be possible to clean it out with carb cleaner. Any comments on this? I am not a shade tree mechanic by any means, just poor and disinclined to lay out a ton o' money for a new one - IF that's the cause.

Hi Robert, Could you please suggest a fix for my 1987 B230F 740? When I cold start the car in the morning the idle speed is approximately ~1000rpm. After approximately 20 - 30 seconds, the RPM jumps up to 1500 - 1600 and stays there. It does not go down. The wiring harnesses have been redone in 2012, i have removed the idle air valve, cleaned the electrical connection with contact cleaner, and cleaned the insides with carburetor cleaner. It does not stick at all and i can feel the valve moving freely when i shake it in my hand. There are no vacuum leaks, i have cleaned the throttle body and put a new gasket on it, and even if i turn the knob on the throttle body that regulates the amount of air going in all the way in, the RPM DOES NOT go to normal idle speed of 750 and stays up in the 1.5k range. I would really appreciate your help - no one's been able to figure it out! Thank you, Stephan.

Great videos Robert! Recently, I bought a 1994 Volvo 940 Turbo in fair condition. The car had been sitting for a while when I bought it. I was experiencing fuel supply problems. The car would shut off on me while driving and it would start back up after 10 minutes. I replaced the ignition wires, fuel filter and then fuel pump. Today, it happened again. While I was driving it shutdown on me and started back up. I visually check the fuel pressure and it seemed good. The fuel pump is not a original part. I purchased it from Auto Zone. What do you think is wrong?
Hi Robert my 1986 760 turbo acts like its running out of gas sometimes it dies and u just start it again ,other times it just starts going again like it got fuel again, this has been going on for a year any suggestions
Hi, i had my car idle rising up to 4000rpm. Replaced to a another one(used one) problem was gone, but.... Cold start, ir revs up to 2000 and slowly drops down, while driving during gear change rpm hold and wven rises a little, which is ver annoying... Had idle valve disconnected, runs fine! But idles bad while cold. Robert, you suggest buyin new one? Im heaving strange experiences with these valves
+Robert DIY after scan showed lambda sensor and coolant temp too low. But disconnecting the idle valve was an obvious difference, and old one was stuck... Not its kind of running... And there are no codes... But the idle hold is killing.. 😕

It looked clean and hums. Is this (humming) and indication that it's functioning? I'm having a hard time finding a used IAC to put in and don't want to spend $175 on a new one only to find that that was not the problem. Are there other thing that I should also be looking at, like Temp Sensor or MAF? Thanks

Hey Robert my 940 has started stalling when I pull up to a set of lights after driving, it will do this several times. The revs go too low then it cuts out bit starts again and idles fine and drives fine. What do you think?
@@RobertDIY oh I think I understood you, I thought you meant physically push the car haha! No, when I put it in to neutral it cuts out, it can happen when coasting down a hill too I stick it in neutral and the engine cuts out. Still drive fine which is strange, could this be a bad MAF sensor?
Just a check engine light, it's a 1990 it doesn't have obd I sprayed cleaner in it and replace, start it up same thing, takes a sec to start but idle bad then cut off I can restart but get worse and can't even give it no gas by pedal so I been looking at all your vids, what u think my problem sr.?
Robert DIY no I sure haven’t. I’m no where near up to mechanic standards. I’m guessing on everything. My service light stays on for few minutes then goes off. When shifting from park to drive and vise verse the engine will surge. Eventually the engine will stop responding to me when I press the gas pedal and the check engine will come on. It’s extremely frustrating.

Probably a intake leak, is it turbo?
@@RobertDIY non turbo
Best!
Thanks
There's that black Lego looking box where you can get the codes
Yes, OBD1.
Hello, I was wondering if this video could be used as reference for a 87 740?
Yes
Would please like your guidance Robert,
88 240 volvo with 2.2 idle air control valve (inlet and outlet straight through, not at right angle). Thank you.
Could be a computer issue. 🤷🏾♂️
Is it supposed to run with the car in run but not turned over yet? Confused me.
Yes
Never mind robert, you have a spare air tickover valve.
You did confuse me when you said it was on automatic when no throttle was being used, i would have expected a fixed mixture for tickover and dynamic when your driving, but i may have mis heard you like i do ha ha :-))
Wonder what voltage the temp sensor is supposed to give, shame there is no data :-(
zx8401ztv I need to check the manual. I'm sure it has an ohm reading range where someone can test it before replacing it (temp sensor).
what is the difference between the Air Control Regulator and the Idle air Valve. Are they the same?
Not sure what an air control regulator is.
Robert, my 1996 Volvo 960 has a problem after driving a short distance , and stopped at a light or something, the idle slowws down and the engine just dies.
then other times, when driving slowly, ( usually in trafic ) then the Engine wants to die and when I depress the accelerator, the engine sort of "coughs" abd almost like a "backfire, and
then sort of "wakes up" and "takes off" again.
I took it to AUTOZONE and they plugged in the computer test, and it came up that the "air pump" ( whatever that is ) has some kind of problem, ( Code 40 or 44 , or possibly a sensor or something ) in connection with the "Air pump"
Robert, have you got any advice for me, as I have a friend that can help me fix it, if we have an Idea what is wrong. ( I have emailed you before, when you helped me with the "mas-airflow sensor" )
Morgan Sorensen
You need the actual P error code. The air pump usually does not effect the car running. Sounds like the MAF is acting up again. Where'd you get that sensor?
@@RobertDIY I think the guy at AUTOZONE looked up the code number on his phone ( internet ?) and said that the Air pump was what the code revealed, but that .....IF the Air pump was the Problem area, that it could also include related issues to the Air pump, such as"shut off valve", "control valve", and or "check valve"
That means nothing to me.
Sad to say, I do not. Have you checked the FPR?
What is FPR, Robert?
Fuel Pressure Regulator.
Thank you. No I haven't yet.
Michael
hey robert great videos, everytime i'm at autozone they can't find parts, i have a 98 v70 turbo wagon, what size engine spec shoulld i tell them or whatever, once they found a part but it was under an s70? p.s. are you a traveling mechanic at all? out in the midwest near chicago?
czcams.com/video/eYOsx9rcAhs/video.html
Robert, so you don't suggest cleaning the existing idle air control valve? How do you know the replacement used idle air control valve from the junk yard is still good? It could still be the problem. Anyways, i am researching if my idle air control valve could be cleaned out....like how we clean the MAF sensor or throttle body. Thanks.
Carb cleaner should work fine. My issue was the fuel pressure regulator.
Good video. Thank you.
Michael Chitwood Thank you for watching.
Could you explain whare is the location of temp sensor?

Hey Robert, I have a 07 Volvo S60.. Every time I start the car for the (first time), It would idle for about a few second and the car would die. Then, I would start the car again; it would idle perfectly without cutting off( usually 50% of the time). It might take a third try. Can you tell my what part or parts would be good to replace to solve this problem? Thanks..

My mom's 940 idles too low when cold. It wants to stall. But they say base cold idle is computer controlled.
Either a computer or sensor issue.
mr robert, i have a 1988 volvo 740 gle. when I start the car I have to give it a little gas for it to warm up and run properly. because if I didn't it would spit and sputter and eventually die. but after giving it a little gas for maybe five or ten seconds the car would run like a champ. now the issue that I'm having is the car spitting and sputtering under acceleration. it's almost like my power is coming on and off the more gas I give it the more it flutters and sputters. do you have any advice on how I should troubleshoot my problem?
+Chris Bishop is the check engine light on? If not you likely have a fuel delivery problem. Maybe the fuel pressure regulator is bad.
concerning my 89 240 with poor 8mpg it was recently tuned.I do remember about a month ago the engine would barely run with it bogging and stalling. I cleaned the mass air sensor and it reversed the problem. Do you think cleaning the sensor again might solve the problem? I checked for vacuum leaks using propane and starting fluid and there was no change in idle speed. I installed a used 02 sensor and it checked good before I put it in. The
+stewart bruce tuned? Sounds like it is tuned to run rich.
Is there a way to test the IAC off the car? If you’re replacing it with a used unit, how do you know the replacement part is working? Thx
Not that I'm aware of.
Yes it is possible. Also, you should clean the throttle body first.
Thanks, Robert. I'll see what is to be seen on throttle bodies!
carmium I have a 2000 Volvo V40 it is idling at less that 1000

89 240 VoLvo getting very low 8.9 mpg around town. three fault codes came up. 1 fault in injectors 2 computer compensating for to rich or lean 3 computer compensating for extremely rich or lean. I can smell how extremely rich its running. Idle is not smooth. Could you please give me a step by step troubleshooting guide.
thank you much,
stewart bruce
When was the last time it was tuned up?
Hi Robert,
Could you please suggest a fix for my 1987 B230F 740?
Thank you,
Stephan.
Also, maybe its not the IAC that is faulty but possibly another sensor?
Sounds like it has a vacuum leak. That or the computer is defective.
mine 740 gl idleing up and dowm repcling mass air on drivers on engine blocat no two plem is it temp sensor ?/? thanks keep up good work they suppose to idle around 800?
I have no idea. Have you checked for an intake leak?
No ETS light is on and I'm having a hard time finding this IAC valve. It starts normal and sometimes i have to step hard on the brake so it won't jump forward when i come to a stop.
+eric alan what kind of car do you have?
2001 v70 volvo 2.4 t
Likely a vacuum issue. I think the transmission has a vent. Your car does not have an IAC.
Really old video hopefully someone still helps me out here. My car idles fine until i turn it off and its warm and go back to turn it on. When it's a warm start I have to shift into any gear then go back to park or neutral to keep idle by itself
What kind of car do you have?
mr robert. The service engine light is intermediate sometimes it comes on sometimes it doesn't
+Chris Bishop ok.
where do you think i should start?
+Chris Bishop fuel pressure regulator
Mr Robert. i changed the fpr. and still having my issue. is there any other places i should try and troubleshoot? the car is still sputtering and hesitating in and out during acceleration and idle.
+Ramon Roane did you replace the fuel pump relay?
No, I did not. You think that might be the problem? I was about the check the filter inside the tank. Do you have a video on the fuel pump relay?
Ramon Roane that is the most common problem.

Have you changed the fuel pump or fuel pump relay?
Hi, i had my car idle rising up to 4000rpm. Replaced to a another one(used one) problem was gone, but.... Cold start, ir revs up to 2000 and slowly drops down, while driving during gear change rpm hold and wven rises a little, which is ver annoying... Had idle valve disconnected, runs fine! Hi Robert, I have a 99 V70 non-turbo throwing a code P0506. Runs fine when it's cold, but I have a rough idle and it stalls a lot when I decelerate. I removed the IAC on my car. It looked clean and hums. Is this (humming) and indication that it's functioning? I'm having a hard time finding a used IAC to put in and don't want to spend $175 on a new one only to find that that was not the problem. Are there other thing that I should also be looking at, like Temp Sensor or MAF? Thanks
+Carlygirl1963 ETM, is likely going bad or dirty.
+Robert DIY Robert, you were exactly right. I cleaned the ETM and it is running perfectly now. The idle is up, runs smooth, and doesn't stall. I cleared the code and it has not come back. Thanks for your help.
You're welcome. Glad that helped.
Did you ever figure out what was causing the hard starting and rough idling?
Bad fuel pressure regulator.

Low RPM's.

Hey Robert my 940 has started stalling when I pull up to a set of lights after driving, it will do this several times. The revs go too low then it cuts out bit starts again and idles fine and drives fine. What do you think?
Try pushing it in neutral and see if that helps.
@@RobertDIY how far and does the engine /ignition have to be on?
Huh?
@@RobertDIY oh I think I understood you, I thought you meant physically push the car haha! No, when I put it in to neutral it cuts out, it can happen when coasting down a hill too I stick it in neutral and the engine cuts out. Still drive fine which is strange, could this be a bad MAF sensor?
After i cleaned my pcv and the small plastic junction to the vent pipes it cured my problem with stalling like yours is suffering with
Mr Robert I'm having problems with 1990 VOLVO idle control, it starts but idle bad can I clean that control value ?

I guess you should remove it and spray it with carb cleaner.
Is there any way you can do a video that shows where the O2 sensors are? 🤗
Probably do not have any. Have you checked the exhaust?
Robert DIY no I sure haven’t. I’m no where near up to mechanic standards. I’m guessing on everything. My service light stays on for few minutes then goes off. When shifting from park to drive and vise verse the engine will surge. Eventually the engine will stop responding to me when I press the gas pedal and the check engine will come on. It’s extremely frustrating.
From what I’m seeing online there is one UPSTREAM sensor and I have no idea where that would be. I have a 1994 Volvo 940 T. Thank you for your reply.
You need to start off by looking. It took you longer to write your messages than it would take to pop the hood and check the exhaust for a sensor.
Robert DIY hey that’s cool man if I knew you were going to be a smart ass I would have asked someone else. Thought I was doing you a favor by subscribing to your channel.
evrytime I ask you say no idea thought you no about problemswith volvos
So, does that mean you did check for an intake leak? Really hard to troubleshoot from 2+ miles away. You can bring it by if you'd like.
