- Canada's New Vertical Banknote is probably the coolest banknote in the world. Launching the new series, it was released at the end of 2018 - the remaining denominations will be released over the upcoming years. A cool addition for banknote collectors!

Thanks for all the super insightful comments informing me that the Queen is in fact a woman. If you'd listened, I say "one of the first" - if you disregard Royalty (as is the custom with banknotes, they're generally on there by default), then Agnes MacPhail was the first (on the 150th anniversary $10), and Viola Desmond second.
Maybe you should've stated that in the video in the first place instead of assuming the custom of disregarding putting royalty in banknotes.
what bigotry
The Queen won't be on our notes forever. The $20 bill has whoever the living monarch is, meaning the Queen will eventually be replaced by King Charles, who will eventually be replaced by King William (or whatever royal names they'll take). Those of us who can use our brains understood why you skipped her over and said "one of the first".
Chris Evangelista:
LOL but who was first tho?!?!?111!
It's not about the future. It's about what's already done and no matter how you put it about royalty, in very literal terms, Queen Elizabeth II was the first lol

Im a cashier so I handle these bills constantly and I can say without a doubt that a fresh bill does smell like maple syrup. In fact when you have a cash register full of new bills it can be really over powering. But the older the bill the more it wears off. If your bill doesn’t smell like maple syrup it’s an old bill. Our bills also have Braille in the corners for blind citizens ;)

As cool as it would be to have Commander Chris Hadfield on our 5 dollar bank note, that's not actually him on the bill.
The depiction of the astronaut represents "all Canadians who have contributed to the space program and the scientific research conducted on board the International Space Station", and thus omits all mission and rank identification other than the Canadian flag patch.
I have officially read this everywhere. However there’s a video of Chris Hadfield visiting a school in a remote arctic community in Northwrn Canada in which he says it is him, so I’ve always taken that to be the truth
@@HalfAsleepChris Thanks for saying as much. I was wondering where this "it's Chris Hadfield" stuff came from. If he said it himself, I would tend to believe him. He wouldn't make that up. Beside, he's the one who unveiled the note while he was in space ;-)

In Canada, way back in 1935, then 8-year-old Princess Elizabeth (who later became Queen Elizabeth II), was first seen on the $20 note (Canada beat everyone). A new design of notes were made 1953 when she finally became queen (as many countries did who had her as their monarch) . It was also the first and last time where she would be featured on every single Canadian banknote (ie, the 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 1000). In 1969 (the next redesign), she was only on the 1, 2 and 20. By 1986 she was on two notes, the 2 and 20, because the $1 note was discontinued in favour of a dollar coin. By 2001 she was only in the $20, because in 1996 Canada switched to a $2 coin. By 2011 she was on two notes, but they were both 20's.(a regular and a commemorative note). That was the last redesign the BOC (Bank of Canada) did. The next redesign/series of notes are not yet know. Considering that Canada has been using polymer notes since 2011, and the BOC has mentioned that the expected lifespan of their notes is around 16 years, that commemorative $20 was released in 2015... so it might be the 2030's before before King Charles III shows up, but some say that's not guaranteed. Some say Canada no longer needs a royal on any banknote, but it's still undecided as to what will really happen. In the meantime, CIII is expected to be on Canadian coins by 2024, but beyond that, QEII might be the last royal to be seen on a Canadian banknote.
Bruh I haven’t had this much Canadian pride in a while. I’ve never seen anyone appreciate Canadian bills like this before
I've been to the Parliament Building's library once before, and holy hell it is BEAUTIFUL. Absolutely stunning, everywhere you look. Including the ceiling.
Fun fact that I learned there: the only part of the Parliament building that survived in the 1916 fire was the library, and it is the only original Parliament building room. Why? Because it has MASSIVE iron doors that weigh a lot that is the entrance. These doors blocked the fire.
The train one we had before was so much better tbh
Don't forget about our GLOW IN THE DARK $2 coin!
If Malaysia can use this concept of vertical banknotes from the Swiss and Canadians, it would make our Ringgit banknotes cooler than ever before.
And Japan should follow these concepts too.
The work put into this video is absolutely incredible and exceptionally well done!
I'm unsure if you have a team working with you for these videos but either way, fantastic work!
I am a Canadian who doesn't like the new bill. Vertical bills are less practical (because wallets are horizontal). And I also don't think it's a good idea to remove the first prime minister from a bill. (Viola Desmond was a good choice, not trying to diminish the fact they found a suitable replacement to put on a bill)
Yeah, but in a cash register they're verticle. Since people who spend all day handling money handle the notes vertically it makes sense. And yeah, John A Macdonald is the only famous historic Canadian I know, as a British person who lived there for 3 years (as a child). Also what's the deal with the brown 100 dollar note lol. I lived in Australia, theirs is green. The Australians have a yellow 50 dollar note, yellow looks way better than brown.
you know you can still put it in your wallet like you always did?
It's more practical for money handling. Also, you just need to look at the colour of the bill to know its value; the orientation of the bill doesn't matter.
@@R3lay0 Yeah but the 10 is sideways. If I am gonna have one 10 in my wallet I don't want it horizontal
@@fourdoorsmoresmores That's gonna change as they release more of the series
The attention to detail we have in our bank notes are so eloquently designed and I love it.
Never before have I been "wow"ing so much when looking at banknotes.
Hahahaha our currency most definitely does NOT smell like syrup. That's hilarious though haha
I think it's a psychological trick... people don't think anything about it until someone suggests it is and then their brain tries to convince them. I've smelled maple syrup and this is not the same as bills.
char m The reason why it smells like maple syrup (to some people) is because the ink, Polymer and weathering resistant coating on the banknote, when mixed together and used on the same object it gives off a smell (maple syrup). And when the banknote gets older and is used more, the smell goes away because it has been used and the resistant coating has worn off. The smell isn’t on purpose as it is only because of those reasons.
