      If the Queen outlives Charles then we'll have the joy of watching William's hairline slowly recede on our coins and notes. Archaeologists in the future will be able to date the coins they find by how big his forehead has become.

    I expect King Charles banknotes will coexist for some time alongside the current ones, gradually becoming more common as worn notes are taken out of circulation. As for coins, while it's true that decimalisation killed off most of George VI coins, the one and two shilling coins remained in use (for 5p and 10p coins) alongside the new coins as they were the same size. I remember getting the occasional King George coins in change right up to the redesigned smaller coins came in. I believe the number of coins minted every year has been falling recently so it could be a very long time before the Elizabeth coins disappear. I wouldn't expect a large changeover event of the kind you get with notes.

    I'm pretty sure the two florin coin survived decimalisation and continued as the 10p coin, alongside newer versions, until the early nineties. Some of those two florin coins still had King George VI's head on. I'd be grateful if somebody could confirm this. Thinking about it, I also think the old shilling coin survived until the early nineties, too, alongside newer 5p coins.

      The Armed Forces too have plans too for the death of a significant Royal. The Royals have been asked for their input etc. An example was when Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother died and we played all music chosen by her. The Pipe bands played a significant rôle as they were her favourite. Operation London Bridge is the name of one of the plans.

      @wendy kelly These things are considered personal affairs. So The Royals actually have a big influence on what is in the plans. They hand pick the music and what officials to invite or not to invite. When Princess Diana died, the Queen Mother's funeral arrangements were dusted and updated. Everybody's knees where shaking what the late Queen was going to say when she sees her own plans altered and when she realised that she had to come up with a new plan.

      He may not even choose "Charles" as his reigning name! Charles I and II have tainted the name through their conflicts with Parliament. It's not uncommon for monarchs to choose a different name from their "main" one to be known as when crowned. For instance, king Edward VIII was called David in private.
      Prince Charles' full name is Charles Philip Arthur George, so he has a few options to choose from! He might opt to become George VII instead of Charles III.

    • @princevesperal
      @princevesperal Před 3 lety +43

      @TheRenaissanceman65 I believe Edward VIII ought to count, as David was his "usual" name. That is the name his friends and relatives called him.
      This means that four out of the last seven British monarchs have been crowned under a name other than their usual one. It may not have been as common in the past, but it seems to have become rather normal in the past 200 years!
      I guess we'll only know Charles' decision in a few decades, when the Queen prematurely dies in a tragic accident at age 129.

Even after decimalisation in the early 70s you could still find coins with King George VI on them as the old one shilling and two shilling coins were used as 5 and 10p coins. As it would’ve been wholly impractical to demonetise/withdraw the half crown on D-Day (And result in a lot of peed-off shoppers!) providing a way it could continue to be used and then taking them out of circulation at banks and post offices was a much more sensible way to go about it. 👍🏽
