Machete Restoration - Rust Bluing [Transformation To A Bunka]

- During the restoration of the old rusty machete, I also had to make a transformation, so that a machete became a bunka. The special thing about the restoration was that I will protect the new knife from new rust with the help of "Rust Bluing". That is, I use rust to protect the bunka from rust, you can also easily replicate the process. Also, when I remodeled the old machete, I used a needle scaler, sandblasted parts to remove rust, used electrolysis to remove rust, made a new handle out of ebony and bubinga, and more. Please also note that this video is not only to quickly show someone how something works, but also to relax and escape from everyday life!
------------------------------------------------------------
▶ What did I do ?! ◀
The rusty machete was in very poor condition, so I had to rebuild it. After derusting with the needle deruster and with the help of electrolysis, the full extent of the rust became clear, so I had to convert the machete into a bunka knife. To match, I chose a wooden handle made of ebony and bubinga, the shape of which is also based on a bunka. The blade is now protected from future rust by a process called "Rust Bluing". This involves using hydrogen peroxide, vinegar and salt to create a layer of red rust. The blade is then placed in boiling distilled water, which turns the red rust into black rust, which now protects the knife from rust. During the restoration, I had to refrain from removing the pitting, because otherwise nothing would have remained of the knife.
------------------------------------------------------------
▶ Good to know ◀
I used the following tools: Needle scaler, laboratory power supply, wire, wood, alligator clips, wire brush, cordless screwdriver, wire attachment, pen, angle grinder, belt grinder, files, grinding jig, saw, marking pen, caliper, immersion heater, hardening furnace, oil, grill thermometer, oven, forging pliers, disc sander, lathe, drill, ruler, pliers, brush, wood glue, screw clamps, sandpaper, compressor, blasting cabinet, blasting material corundum, distilled water, hydrogen peroxide, salt, vinegar, bowls, cotton swabs, glue, linseed oil varnish

For those curious, this blade started life as specifically a billhook machete - note the exaggerated curve at the end. The cutting edge of such a knife would face the same direction as the hook, and was meant for chopping woody plants, mostly for hedging and cutting the side shoots from branches. By transforming it into a bunka (a Japanese kitchen knife which has since been overtaken in popularity by the santoku), Forgotten Shine has effectively flipped the edge to the reverse side of the original manufacture.
I do agree with another commenter that the final handle on this one looks uncomfortable to hold. Authentic bunka, and indeed most Japanese cutlery, have a more rounded handle. Even ones that don't, though, have a more ergonomic design than this. While the handle's finish is pretty to look at, it's not very practical.
Still, 4/5 video. Who doesn't like a nice restoration/transformation every now and again?
Thank you for your detailed reply! Yes, I theoretically hold the machete upside down on the thumbnail. It is also true that from the back of the machete I made the edge of the bunka, otherwise I would never have had enough material...👍🐢
Yeah it's a kiritsuke knife definitely not a machete. But still looks good.
You wrote so much

Me and my cat love these videos, he sits and listens to the noises and they help me sleep, 10/10 work
Thank you! I'm very happy if you like it 🐢
So satisfying convert a piece of junk in a brand new High quality instrument. Excelent work 👍👍👍
Thank you so much for your wonderful feeback! 🐢🤩
This is my Favorite Restoration Channel! Great job on the Resto-Mod! The handle would probably not be comfortable in my hand...too blocky. I've been missing "Mr. Turtle", so I'm glad he made an appearance! I'm also glad you protected him when you were quenching the blade. Need him to be around for a long time!!! I LOVE how you Describe Everything that's going on. Just One of the things I love about this channel! Bravo!!!
Thank you so much for your great Feedback! 🤩😍🐢
Rrrrrr
Oh my lawd this is so satisfying
Thank you very much! 🤩🐢

First time I actually see Rust bluing, really interesting. Really love how it turned out!
Thanks for your feedback! I must say, I am also more or less by chance stumbled on it and had to try it out. I was fascinated how well it worked. 🐢
Awesome work, mate. Seriously a great video, my daughter and I loved every part. Thanks
Thank you very much! 🤩🐢
I watch a ton of restoration videos but I DEFINITELY look forward to yours the most. The first one I saw was your black cleaver episode. You always seem to have the most interesting methods and the tools are always in the worst condition. I appreciate you don't just grind off the rust like other channels I've seen. Great result here, the machete and handle look great!
Thanks for your great comment, I'm glad to read something like this!🐢
The black cleaver one was the first ones I watched too. I was entranced! It remains my fav video to this day.
@@ForgottenShineRestoration do you rust all the projects yourself
I know next to nothing about this craft but these videos are always so interesting!!
I watched your video with interest! Well shot and edited close-ups! The restoration work is great, as is the end result! Good luck bro and inspiration!!!
That looks absolutely beautiful
Thank you very much! 🐢
Hello! I've been watching for awhile, and really enjoy your work. Recently, my wife has been watching these with me before bed, and without fail, it has helped her sleep, haha. She really likes any sort of blade, and it makes her happy seeing how carefully you restore these beauties. Godspeed on your endeavors, brother! You do good work :)
Thank you for your feedback! My videos actually help a lot of people fall asleep, that's completely okay 😅👍🐢
New techniques, amazing video, sounds. Thank you for sharing this amazing process!
Thank you very much! 🐢
Love your work. Every restoration can’t be nice and shiny. Please keep making videos with 🐢
For those who dont know:
> Red rust is Hematite
> Black rust is Magnetite
Hematite is unstable and water soluable, whereas a patina of Magnetite is very stable.
Its always so satisfying to see the rust come off like that
That's right 🤩👍🐢
These are the videos you watch when you just want to to see something unique and random
This is by far my favorite restoration account on CZcams
Oh wow thank you ver much! 🐢
Przepiękna jest jest zrobiona ta cała robota pozdrawiam twórcę tego filmiku serdecznie 👍👍👍👍
Very beautiful
i have to say that i dont love the physical design of the handle- although rounded edges, the overall boxy design is an image that i can physically feel. just a preference and the choice of wood is great as well so i have to say 9/10... nice :)
Amazing what you were able to do - Great Job!
Thank you! 🐢
Really love how it turned out!
Un grande professionista con attrezzature eccezionali. Bravissimo 🥰
Grazie mille! 🐢

Klasse gemacht. Sieht durch das brünieren richtig edel aus.
Tolles Video. Danke fürs hochladen.
Danke für das Lob!🤗🐢
Nice elegant finish, well done.👍
Thank you, bro! 🐢
Such a clever simple idea I went duh, your use of the drill and vise together showed what could be done when you need more than two hands and do not have a bench top grinder, great episode.
Thank you! Sometimes it's the little things that help us so much, right?! So you have your hands free for the real work. But of course you can also just use a pillar drill...🐢
Realmente, é um trabalho incrível, ficou maravilhoso
Muito obrigado! 🐢
This channel needs more views, Grade A content 👏 👌
Thank you very much! 🤩👍🐢
Finally NOT STUPID MIRROR FINISCH BLADE , apparently is mandatory on youtube knife work ......Great job . Most satisfactory part the bluing . Well done !!
Thank you very much! 🤩 🐢
I don't know why I need to watch this stuff. It just makes me feel good.
That's the main thing! 🐢
your 2x72 belt grinder looks like one i have been thinking about getting just wondering well it works etc
also first time seeing your channel great work look forward to seeing more
Thank you and welcome! Yes I am very satisfied with the belt sander, you can work very accurately and precisely, quite super! The other large (also in the video) belt sander is very rough on the other hand...🐢
I fell in love with restoration’s like this 😂😂😂
Can you do this to my brain please, god this is art and so damn impressive
I love seeing rust barnacles fly with the needle scaler.
🤣🤣🐢
If I saw a Machete like this I would throw it away, the strength of the metal has been comprised.
Perfect upload time I was just about to start my bedtime video routine
That's perfect 😍 Where are you from? 🐢
Wyoming, United States! Granted it’s 4am for me but I’m a low-key insomniac so this is my usual bedtime
Oh, that is actually very late or early 😅 With us it is just 12 o'clock noon. I wish you a good night already 🤗🐢
Wow that’s crazy! Time zones are so cool. I really enjoyed the video :) thank you very much! Have a good day

Oh my god yes, thank you so much for this Christmas present💜

I impressed with your ability to salvage something that was so far gone. I didn't think there was any metal left in there. Good job 👏
How Nice is that..great job..i can look at this vídeo 10 times..congrats

Tirou bastante da originalidade da peça, mesmo assim ficou top...parabéns.

That was hell of a work! It was like watching forging a sword
Thank you very much! 🐢
W o W ! ! What a great restoration !

Why does this machete look like a giant sword, but in a reduced form
I don't remember how I found this channel but I'm glad I did

Amazing Beautiful Restoration
Thank you very much! 🐢
I will definitely just buy a new one. 😅
but your video is very satisfying.
Dude you must live on like Venus to find things in this condition so often
Nice job! Although that blocky handle looks impossible to actually hold comfortably to me 😨
🤣🤣👍🐢
Most of these videos are probably fake.
My videos are not fakes! Why should they be? 🤷🐢
Excelente trabalho
You should use the needle scaler more often, it scratches an itch in my brain so well.
Ok, I will do it again with 😁🐢

Muy bonita labor. Muy interesante vídeo; pero esto no es restaurar. Es aprovechar lo que hay para hacer otra cosa. Algo maravilloso; pero no es restaurar.

Moc vám děkuji! 🤩🐢
I need your sand/bead blaster. I do some refinishing on some of my old handguns but up until now I have sanded the parts by hand
Nice Handle, Beautiful!
Thank you! 🐢
The fact that I have EXTREME audio sensitivity makes this 100000% better
Thank you for your feedback! is this something good or bad? How do you feel about the audio in the video? 🐢
@@ForgottenShineRestoration ok 🐢
That handle! 😍😍
Thank you very much! Nice to read from you again! 🤗🐢
Beautiful job as always. Watching the bluing process was both interesting and free education.
Your work is getting better and more intricate with every new video. Keep it coming.
P.S. your work stands on its own you don't need the turtle to enhance it.
Thank you very much! 🐢
this is not actualy a machete but it is a bill hook... the blade is on the inside of the curve not the outside curve... i have one but the tip rusted off so i flattened the inside curve
Fantastic work congratulations friend.
Thank you very much! 🐢🤩
Hello, I had a question, where do you find these old items?
These videos are ASMR
Whenever he took it out from electrolysis it looked like the magma wyrm’s scalesword from Elden Ring
❤ I love your work
Thank you very much! 🤗🐢
Amazing work! I wonder where the heck do you find those super rusted things ._.
Thank you! I bought it on Ebay 🐢

Heel erg bedankt! 🐢
Nice job brother. Like from India🇮🇳
Thank you very much! greetings from Germany. 🐢
Really interesting videos and I love them but I'm starting to notice that he has unique designs of handles lol
🤣🤣🐢
i’ve so many restoration videos, and the majority seem fake or staged, but your videos seem 100% legit
Thank you very much! You're right about that too, I don't fake anything in my videos. The rust is real, the items are old and the processes are shown as they happened.... 🥰🤩🐢
Você simplesmente é o melhor!!

What's up with the 'poc marks' on like rusted knives and swords? Is it normal wear and tear?
Beautiful knife.. not sure about the square handle though.

That rust bueing was very interesting. But I don't get the square handle
