  • Hey Material Girls! So two of the questions I get asked most often is what machine should I buy first and what's the difference between them. You asked and I answered, why get a sewing machine versus a serger? Leave a comment and let me know if you want more videos on sergers and how to use them, thread them, etc.

I definitely use both as my serger/overlocker hasn't got the space on my right part of the needle like my sewing machine is and when I make huge full skirts you need that space to put bulk of fabric in when sewing bustle skirts like I do and quilts. ;)

Nice vid! Thanks for showing the usefulness of a serger! I'm a dude here though...not a material girl haha. Funny video, though I'd lose the very subtle background music. The twerk sequence was pretty funny. :D The serger really makes a huge difference in getting a professional look and protection against fraying.

You know No one explains this, that you still need to have a sewing machine. I brought a serger to finish raw edges, not to construct the entire garment. I was trying to decide should I mark my seam line on all pieces, then serge my edge. After with rt sides together stitch my seam. Usually I don't mark the seam line because we do 5/8 allowance of whatever allowance it calls for. I want to always allow the serger to cut the clean edge.

Congrats on the new sewing machine, I haven't done a guided on this machine. I did one for my previous machine but it's not computerized. I would say start with just playing around with the settings and making basic stitches. It's pretty easy to get used to once you get started. 😉😊

But I believe it's on the 3rd row below that actually shows you the foot that is a seam serger. you have to play with the stitches to find it. Oh really your computer Brother sewing machine basically has it you just got to find the right foot and play with your stitches get to know your machine.
