This movie is so sad. Because it came from true perspectives of German people in world war 1. And how they made the war sound like fun. Even though it was going to be hell. And how they thought it will be like a couple days. But to them it will be forever.

My grandmother lived in London as a young woman in WW I. Units were recruited from neighborhoods as "Pals" (or "buddy") battalions who would serve togethor. After an offensive, a whole neighborhood might be covered in black. Every wife a widow and every mother minus a son.

The generation that grew up on the same tails of glory and decisive battles from the second world war took them with them to Korea, Vietnam and the like. The children of the 70s and onwards though grew up on a very different diet, of the horrors and futility of wars, and it's been growing ever since. Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iraq again.

All quiet on the western front was one of the perfectly depicted series even when it was written because it shows the horrors of the great war and it was one of the books that the nazis heated because it made their country look week, in fact the author escaped to the us losing people in his family for it

I remember reading this in middle school because it was the shortest book on the list. I swore I'd never pick up a weapon in the name of another with the intent to harm. It's an extraordinarily painful book.
The original movie traumatised me so much I couldn't even watch the adaptation. I was going to but saw The Kings Man, and cos I was bawling my eyes out at that I didn't think I'd be able to watch this one. The same with the soldiers in the American Civil War. They all went in with chivalry and gusto, but by the second year, most had experienced the horror of modern warfare.
The reason for the uniform already having a name tag is also fucked up. They took the uniforms of dead soldiers, repurposed them, and shipped them off to be given to new recruits
That's the reallity of a war economy. Just look at the USSR during WWII (boots got cut from the bodies got stitched up and shipped back). When your meet the limits of your production capacity you use whatever you've got.
