We can run an EV from the sun in Scotland, at least in summer anyway by plugging it into our domestic solar. Putting panels on a car only makes sense if they are light weight, but every mile they save is a mile that you don't have to burn expensive, dirty fossil fuel for. 😊
Boxy EV is still far better than a boxy ICE. Especially with that factory solar roof module.

Thanks Sam, EV's with Solar are great. Thats why i like EV's like the Xbus.
But this one is a real car with a good range. And i like the style.
What I would realy like is an EV with vehicle to grid or vehicle to home. Actually, i dont understand why not all EV's have that.
A solar panel this size can give you around 0.5kW. If you park outside all day in New Castle, you can get 3-5 kWh, or 5-10% of the battery's capacity, or 10-20 miles. It's like getting 0.5 gallon of free gas everyday!

man, you know, 0.5gallons and 30 days(one month), that's 15 gallons, that's 60 bucks saved a month, 720 a year, that's tons,
I’d say almost everyone said solar wouldn’t work on an EV in its early days due to its size, these days the solar is becoming versatile, able to work with even curved glass, now its becoming the perfect addition to an EV when it’s used to send power to the battery pack and not just the stand alone 12v system that some EVs still have that let down the package
I like it, especially at that price! Looks a bit like a mini hummer haha. Modern solar panels are getting better and better... sounds good to me. You can't leave an ICE vehicle outside and the gas tank fills up a little...

Although it's nice to know the battery is being trickle charged when in the sun I wouldn't want to constantly park it in direct sunshine. Here in Portugal Algarve the sun wrecks your paintwork and rubber window seals, wiper blades, etc in no time. I would still prefer to park it under a carport and just charge with excess from my PV panels which I can easily do with my Victron system. The car looks great I would buy it without the solar option...
They should make the bonnet a single flat carbon fiber surface and put a solar panel on that also. Would help increase the range but also make it more visible by people walking past it that it's getting free energy. Slightly smaller aero wheels should be an option also for people not planning on taking it off road that would rather longer range without a larger battery.

For me, its about 5cm too wide and 5cm too tall.. but I can live with that - for a short length AWD EV with 170cm ground clearance (decent for light offroad), solar roof, the new Shenxing LFP battery, and at a sensible price. One to keep an eye out for.

Have been thinking bout this for a while in Australia with our outdoor life style we love our aluminium patio we could combine them with solar and charge houses or cars off the larger roof space for longer range and to run our homes not just attached to the car

chinese cherry store got cars for show but not for sale yesterday.20,000usd is for 1motor 2wd model with smallest battery and the 2motor 4wd largest battery model with lv2 autoDrive(I don't know about the battery capacity though)costs 27000usd,and this model still without solar charge option,
Loads of cars have massive glass (panoramic) roofs these days. Sandwiching solar modules between the sheets really is a no brainer
I just hope they do better with the software on the ICE which does communicate well at all...
Needs a bigger solar panel or just extra on the hood. If not a portable wind turbine that you can deploy while parked to charge the ev battery.

Car looks good on styling and with a solar roof, yes set up for Australia,USA,Mediterranean Europe and Pacific nations makes perfect sense. Range 500kms perfect sweet spot and fantastic price if build quality is good should be a winner

Yes because they will use the brake calipers to slow down the spinning wheel. The downside of that is the wear and overheating of the brake disc so it is only usefull for short periods of off roading. A real off roader needs either 4 in wheel motors or a locking diff setup

Is an efficient design a necessity, or even desirable? Maybe. If the EV is NEVER driven fast, and only short range, needed for transporting a minimum of 4 people, with baggage, then aerodynamics, lightweight, could be sacrificed for unique day-day usage. But, if medium+ speeds, medium + range, is common, or needed enough (an analysis is needed), then cost might be the deciding factor.
However, there is one more factor, the intangible appeal of "looks", design, "beauty to the eye". I don't need the Aptera Sol. I want it. I will drive it slow, short distances, grocery shopping mainly, under 2000 miles/yr. Efficiency is NOT a necessity. I don't care. I want efficiency, self-charging. And I want that design. I fell in love. I have two ordered since 2020.

QUESTION SAM: If a person is already buying solar and battery storage for a house, why pay a extra $10k for the solar on the vehicle roof? You estimated this vehicle with solar is $10k more, and that, that is the version you like, but why pay the extra $10k? It is like doubling your bills, if you have solar and battery at your house. What is less expensive... making sure your house energy system has enough energy to charge your vehicle OR going small in the house and paying the additional solar for the vehicle? I assume that a large house system that can charge your vehicle, overall would be less expensive?
Because you can go camping and to the outback without running out of fuel. You just need food and water and you will be able to drive
The first reason is the 50 km extension cable you save on. Or the home battery and wall charger you will need.
The second reason is limited (or no) roof space
Just a direct connection from the solar panel to the battery management system is a great idea. No dependency on the grid.
And having your EV parked in the sun/outside will deteriorate it. Better in a garage.

Is it worth the extra cost and weight? The associated inverter electronics to charge batteries also add phantom drain... You will need a sunny place for this to make sense
@@ttkddry most of a normal solar panel weight is the glass. So compared to a sunroof this adds very little. Also solar cells have been improving, even having multiple layers that capture different part of the spectrum for energy production. Keeping the car clean is very hard I think. You would need water and a cloth and be taller than a child. As for shade, maybe there is a way to move this machine to a good position. Or just put it on and open space where there are no building, like a road maybe? Solar panels only add energy to a car. The electronics needed can be shut down to a dormant state, needing less power than keyless entry.
Will it add a lot of range? Probably not if you drive 500 miles a day. But if you drive 500 miles a month, these flat panels can add a lot in comparison, depending on the weather. And if you do get stuck somewhere with an empty battery because you missed the last charger, just put your feet up until there is enough charge to get you home in solar limp mode.
It's been done already and it works. Just think of it as a green range extender, not a replacement for charging all year long.

Not sure 1 panel would add 40kms a day? have been trying to get some info on charging an EV from say 10 panels off grid, do you need a battery to allow the charging to take place, will it be a problem for electronics charging straight from panel to EV battery?
China is starting to make good cars that don't look like jerk-off cars. I hope these can come to the U.S. for half the price of typical cars sold in the U.S. Similar to early Korean cars. That will really shake things up. I think the only thing preventing that is safety standards, which should not be a big problem in this decade.
We are looking at getting a Prius Prime with the solar roof. It's EV range combined with Texas blazing sun and the solsr roof mean she will be able to commute without using gas most of the year.

Aptera is a coffin on wheels. If you get in a serious wreck you are done. I don’t think it will pass the crash tests for an automobile. It will be classified like some of the other three wheel vehicles.
Love it. I can't buy a Tesla because of the curved back. Can't haul or do anything with it. But this is great, would love it in the US. But we are a closed and protected market and as such do not have much new innovations.
If this isn't made like garbage, Ford and GM have a big problen.

Passive solar charging potential and it's not ugly either.
Try to screen for something like realistic ideas? 10 solar panels on a home in Vegas are about enough to power a Tesla Model 3 for 20-30 miles. How far are the equvelent of 1 or 2 panels, flat on top of a vehicle going to move a big SUV. A 1 or 2 miles? OK its something but not much. What do you do when the panel fails .. replace your roof? You can just buy flexible cells and put them on your EV when you aren't driving; use magnets to hold them down have an inverter ..but it won't pay for itself. I suppose if you fell short of your charging station a mile or two sitting in the sun all day could get you there.
How does this compare to a Jeep Compass? Which Chinese brands are pursuing the Jeep legacy customer market?

I like the idea of the car. The size, height and solar. What I don't like is the overly long front hood design. Not EV. The Cybertruck front has current EV design for this kind of vehicle. Just do it.
You might change your mind about design choices if you ever get in a front end collision.
@@MrLuigi-oi7gm Safety is engineered into the vehicle, but not with random inches of hood. Crash tests are a better indicator than length of a design. Thankfully. there are other ways of measuring front crash safety., if you were really interested..
@@eb1888. The mass of an engine in the front, and the distance over which a car is stopped, play significantly into the physics involved in a front end collision and the forces involved. I am well aware there are ways to mitigate the downsides of reducing that mass and distance with alternate mechanisms. But it takes a great deal of research, engineering skill, and additional hardware to do that. Time will tell. As a physicist, I can explain more if you were really interested.
