- Ed's 2463 total in Vegas 1998. You may note, ed's last dl warmup was on the main platform. He also hit 2 warmup squats (not included here) also on the platform, as did John Binkowski. (there was a plate issue with warmup area)They were done after all lifters in earlier flight finished round. Great meet, you'll also notice the late Doug Furnas handling Ed.

He did 2 1/2 my total
2,463 total and 9/9 with real judges, minimalist equipment, and no monolift. Coan has no equal.
Not to mention this was after his hamstring injury which prevented him from pulling sumo. No doubt he'd have gotten 2500 if he could've done sumo.
I respectfully disagree with Andrey Malanichev totaling 2,469.1 raw. Personally I view Ed as overhyped
Bryson Presley Over-hyped? Lol he totaled 2463 @237 raw. Malanichev is my favorite lifter and a very humble and down-to-earth guy, but the thing is his total was 6.1 pounds heavier than Coan's while he was in the SHW class (over 308 pounds). I know it's your opinion but i just don't see why someone wouldn't agree that Coan is the GOAT.
I mean of course i have mad respect for Coan, I just don't think he was the greatest ever. Definitely up there though.
Jake Evans Lol this. Coan didn't even bother cutting water weight for his meets.
2463 total. the world record is 2500. and the guy who did that is close to 400 lbs. Coan is a freak!
Ed's total is single ply.
how much weight does the single ply gear even add? I heard that back then single ply hardly did anything compared to the gear used now
Ed's single ply is not a standard squat suit dude. That thing would add hardly anything to his squat. This is about as strong as someone can get; and that is what powerlifting is all about. This whole raw vs. geared obsession is beyond retarded. You cannot take this lift or total away from coen because of his fucking shirt.
Jasper Aquino Ed is a beast but I would still not compare his lift to raw lifts done today especially vs raw with sleeves/belt.
VodeMasta666 Old equip like his probably not a lot.
I honestly can't comprehend how strong this man was. He isn't just one of the best pound for pound lifters ever, he's one of the strongest men in history ever. Few people have ever moved these weights.

Didn't understand how good this guy was till I watched this.
Look at the equipment - the wraps the suits the bars - all shit by today’s standards! This is the greatest meet total of all time.
The wraps stretched like ace bandages, he wrapped himself and and today’s suits cannot even go on with one person. Amazing throughout all his lifts.
Thanks man someone with a 🧠. He was basically wearing a singlet with all his lifts.
Ed would wrap his own knees and put his own straps up.
He was known for using the same old suit over and over.
Very unreliant on the equipment in that era.
No squat or deadlift bars, no monolift, etc.
No bench shirt ever.

659.95 wilks.... If anybody was wondering.. What a beast
Got a chance to meet Ed at one of the olympia expos a year or two back, while I was working medical standby. I was star struck, and he was so humble and snapped a quick photo with me. Not only is he a beast, but he's super nice and humble about it.
how does this only have 50k views? this should be viewed by the millions
Ed was born for this sport. The best Powerlifter to ever live, period.
such a legend.
bit dramatic . lifts weights hardly stuff of legend

Several years later but I've seen this Bruce Dickinson guy basically comment the same thing on multiple videos about Ed Coan. Never really knew there were dedicated Ed Coan haters out there but hey that's the beauty of the internet.

Met this guy years ago at the Arnold during meet. Probably the most down to earth guy I've met. Humble but absolutely a Fucking beast then and now!
In his book he lays it out very specifically. That's how meticulous he was in training and coaching. No more energy was to be wasted on anything other than the lift than absolutely required. Amazing...
I love how while everyone is screaming and losing their shit, he seems perfectly collected. Refreshing, after seeing the dramatics of Chris Duffin

a true living legend and a nice guy full of knowledge
The perfectly proportioned powerlifter. With X factor, intelligence and humility.
Greatest powerlifter of all time !!
Best lifter i have ever seen and he has a great personality as well. Greetings Ed. Those were great times. Glad to know you.
The greatest of all time
Ed you are awesome. This video displays the perfect combination of power, class, and humility. I found myself laughing at how strong and clean your lifts looked.
Watching this video for motivation never gets old!
Love how humble Ed Coan is. Dedicated himself to something he loved and became the best ever. Lots of lessons learned from him.
Don't know when i have been more impressed!!
This is the most incredible lifting video in existence.
humble guy and the greatest powerlifter of all time in my eyes #1 BIG ED FOREVER
The GOAT! Ed played a major part in me getting into powerlifting.
I met Ed when he first started competing Nationally, if memory serves me correctly he was a 165 lb'er at the YMCA Nationals in Columbus, OH. I tore my pec in late 84' and he took the time to talk with me and give me hope, absolutely a great competitor and friend to all.
I wish there was a way we could extrapolate Ed's totals if he was as heavy as a guy like Andrey Malanichev. Ed's lifts are mind-boggling !
+J Gamez and what about self wrapping with this soft wraps?! No doubt GOAT

you are a superstar ed!!! A bloody true inspiration.
I remember being in the room. I had friends that worked out at quads. It was amazing watching the whole competition
Beautiful technique as well as amazing weights!
Oh shit, that was a nice opening! Smoothed, controlled and perfect technique!
in the backround I hear tom milanovitch , then you see tommy in other shots...he was always there for you ed..always offered encouragement and support to you...to all his friends..sadly he couldn't save himself from his own weakness...one we forgive him for because he was as we are....only human...we will miss you tom for as lond as we can remember....you were a lucky gut eddy to always have tom there backing you up...supporting you......
Its funny because with today's equipment he would've gotten well over 2,600.
He deadlifts raw, his bench is always either raw or ton with a skimpy bench shirt, the knee wraps and suits back then didn't do shit.
what do you know about old school squat suits? plus you suck at lifting
***** forgot I asked ha
Charlie Galasso put on a pair of under armour compression shorts that are two sizes too small for you. That's about the assistance a suit gave you 15-20 years ago.
hildenbrandt21 ok but it was the best avaliable, that's all that matters. They were trying to use as much ad possible. Ed notably did not do that he used loose equipment. But its an arms race man, use the best you can.
This happened the year I was born damn!
He has always been a class act
How does the late 90's look so early 80's?
This doesn't look early 80's at all.

One of the greatest squats of all time... probably best overall meet of all time
Incredible lifting by the powerlifting powerhouse that is Ed Coan, looked like he could do more in all 3 lifts as well..
eddy coan mi inspiration , and in my opinion , one of the best powerlifter in the history
The greatest lifter ever. Ed Coan is my inspiration for excellence on the platform.
I'd argue that lamar gant is the greatest. He won the world champions 15 years straight and it was never close. No man will ever do that again. He could have gone for 20 if he wanted too. Ed won like 6 and he tested positive 3x also. Both great but lamar is the best no question.
+stephen ruby I mentioned this to another poster but Ed did not test positive for steroids in 2 of the three suspensions by the IPF. The first time he DID test positive and he readily admitted he'd taken some Deca 6months prior to heal his torn pec and didn't realize how long it stayed in the system. The last two times he did NOT test positive for steroids. His test/epi-testosterone ratio has too high both times which implies he was using external testosterone. Ed denied ever doing that but the IPF basically didn't care.
God he is something else. Just completely something else
Good job Ed Coan! That 1000lb squat is impressive and awesome haha! 💪
This is unbelievable!!!
Just a freak. Ed will always be legend. His squats are UNREAL. He has it all.
10:36 that happy slap tho
that shit was pretty funny.
Awesome deadlifts!!
Incredible
I liked watching his walk out, it was the exact same 3 small steps every time without any re adjusting. He had it down and perfect
That walk out is without peer. Total control of over 1000 pounds! Walking out the weight takes a tremendous amount of energy. Today, lifters not only squat above parallel, but do not have to walk out the weight when the meet involves the appropriate equipment. Ed Coan's squat at this meet looked easy. He had another 30 to 50 pounds in him.
a 2463 total... what makes him the GOAT is that this is essentially a raw total with those knee wraps not doing much more than ace bandage and the shirt and singlet not giving more than a tight under armour shirt. even though this is a single ply total, he could have easily pulled off at least a 2200-2300 total in today's raw IPF/USAPL federation as a 220 or 242 lifter which would be even today absolutely untouchable.
I like how he actually hits parallel on those squats... some of these new guys I wonder sometimes.
Still unbelievable...
Did he ever break Big Lenny's record?
Tommy Pickles Pissening
He is awesome 💪
amazingening
Not in the AM bro
That is one strong dude
One of the greatest I've ever seen lift. And he wrapped his own knees, so I know they're not very tight. And a single layer squat suit. And he still out lifted others who wear crazy equipment
What a great lifter
Ace Bandage "wraps" loose as all get out too! Insane.
Greatest of all time!!!!
What a classy champion! A great inspiration for any powerlifter!
btw....anyone know who the big guy with the beard in the red shorts standing to the far left at 3:00 is?
I find it amusing that the vast majority of comparison lifters mentioned in an attempt to downplay the amazing talent of Ed Coan and his G.O.A.T status, shows an equally amazing failure to grasp the concept of body weight by said posters. Show me a lifter who can lift the weights of Coan without ridiculous gear and without the sissy mono lift with a comparable body weight and I'll eat my proverbial hat. Until then, the door's there...GTFO. As a last mention, also note that Ed has exceeded each of these lifts singularly on separate occasions, with a similar body weight and condition. 471kg squat, 265kg bench and 409kg deadlift (this at 100kg bw sumo!)
+TheT0nedude I agree with your assessment and it's actually quite brilliant. Ed had to lift, step back, and stabilize with a half ton on his back. The amount of time and effort that takes saps the entire body of energy. Re-racking is the same thing. Having to walk it back in makes the lift much harder.
For those who want to really examine Ed's benching versus lots of people in modern day powerlifting, just look at how he was able to move his upper body. The bench shirts today make if difficult for lifters to lay down without having their arms stuck in the "up" position. They need 500 pounds on the bar just to get the bar to travel down to their chest! The shirt is a spring that adds more than 200 pounds to max bench numbers.
Ed Coan is the most physically gifted lifter of our time.
COPFIT Media Agreed of course. If Ed had ever stooped to using the pussy monolift I'm sure he could've added more to his already massive squat. It's a fact that Ed lifted true super heavy weight class lifts at 110kg (maybe even at 100kg). He first hit a 1000kg total at 90kg(!) which is frankly ridiculous, at that meet the guy in 2nd (from Finland IIRC) had a total 10% less than him. When has that ever happened in any other world class level sport? (It just doesn't). Most of the guys lifting comparable weights were benefiting from 20-50kg of extra bodyweight, and the effect that has cannot be understated.
exactly mate. incredible strength for his body weight
+TheT0nedude Brett gibbs and jesse norris maybe. They both compete in IPF with really strict rules, such as drug testing, two hour weigh ins, and no knee wraps. And obviously no bench shirts. I think they are comparable.
booby b Just checked them out and both very strong lifters. It's possible for sure although Jesse is young and time will tell. Coan dominated 5 body weight classes with well over 10x totals (in each) from teenage years and up. Jesse usually competes raw (kudos) - which is very difficult to evaluate compared to equipped. Just watched Jesse pull 800lbs raw @198lbs (although lockout was suspect) but nevertheless impressive indeed -this was exhibition not judged. Compare that to Coan who pulled 860 at same bodyweight (also raw) at the Worlds. Only lift Coan actually did raw...
No question, Greatest lifter of all time.
The number of people spotting that Squat is insane.
monster of a man, and got to mire that form!!
Pure beast!
Man that crowd was fired up
Note that Ed Coan's lifts were completed under IPF Rules. Single layered suits and standard 2 meter knee wraps.
WOW I LOVE THIS VID
All he needs is some tasty waves a cool Buzz and a BIG SLAP lol Damn he's a LEGEND!!! 💪💪💪
I love the crowd
I love how he hits the exact minimum depth allowed for a legal lift on the squat. That had to take practice to get that form perfected.
I no you watched the show down on the 83kg world's today?
Awesome!! Do you have any other footage of Ed?
Damn that squat was all the way down. What a legend
Coan's world records are mine
A life's work
Eds the Man check out these lifts
this is real equipped power lifting. compared to todays 4 inches ROM 3000+ totals
The Iron Toenail this is single ply
Dog I would t even call this equipped. Might have added 75 pounds to the entire total.
@@Sploshification bs. the squad alone 75-100
@@lauraspitz440 squad?
Not sure as to what stats you're referring to, but this was not an IPF Worlds (which Don's records have since been been surpassed), as well as different weight class.
Greatest feat of strength EVER!!!!!
imtheheadboss517 Nah Eddie halls 500kg deadlift was
Class act.
Legend :)
One of the greatest ever, absolutely brutal speed!,. Who else can pull like that? both conventional and sumo and weigh 108. Amazing!.
The best ever...Ed Coan
GOAT
Jeremy Hamilton reminds me of Ed with how humble they both are
+Tea Why Jelly Yeah Jeremy is very down-to-earth. In his interview with Chris Duffin after breaking the 220 class all time total he said he's not even close to Ed - just doing his best Ed Coan impression. Great attitude!
Force of nature!
I love how pumped up his buddy is for him he just smacks him across the face at 10:35.
The king powerlifting, the powermonster!!!!
HOLY CRAP!!!!!
Not a fan of powerlifting at all but this guys form was picture perfect for each lift, full ROM, even paced, very little struggle. On top of that he actually maintains a impressive physique. Lots of respect.
🐐
The G.O.A.T in powerlifting
Hence, GREATEST POWERLIFTER OF ALL TIME.
being that he had to take a step back to do the squat and still squatted 981 and make it look easy!...awesome!
Is that Ronnie Coleman in the background talking at 7:27 ?
i dont think so ahahha

IT absolutely is. Coleman is know for his feats of raw strength.
