  • Today we're unboxing and using for the first time ever the new 2020 21" Toro Super Recycler push mower! Tons of you guys have this popular push mower and have said that Toro did a great job with it, including the well thought out features like the Smart-Stow and their Next-Level Mowing system.
Toro did send this item out to us to share with you guys, and this is by no means a review in any way shape or form. However, we did put it through it's paces today on my moms property and boy did it do a great job on her lawn. I've been anxiously awaiting for this mower to come in the mail, hence why the grass was over 6" tall, so safe to say, we were ready to put it through some thick tall grass!
We'll make sure to keep you guys updated as we go throughout the season and give you updates on how we like the new mower. I will say so far we're really enjoying the personal pace technology and the smart stow for storage! It's just crazy to me that we're using a gas push mower on my moms lawn because that's how we got started 20 years ago! How crazy is that.
What do you guys think about the Toro Super Recycler? Do you guys have the black-out edition?! Leave me some comments below, I'd love to hear what you guys think that have already been using this mower since spring!

I can say I didn't use a push mower in 25 to 30 yrs but I gained a customer in South Tampa,Florida. That needed a small mower and I went out and bought the toro 30" and it does great. After years of use it's still the only customer I use it on. Typicality if I get a customer with a small gate I put in a bigger gate to fit a 72" or a 48" mower, time is money gotta keep the man hours down... good video

I bought a Cub Cadet Sr621 with 180cc Kawasaki in about 2000 with a similar side set up (not quite as convenient). It had two covers on wingnuts, one discharge chute and one mulching/bagging cover. The mower did not hold up well (wheels, cables, height adjustments, transmission etc) but the Kawasaki engine still runs perfectly!

We bungie cord the discharge chute open instead of using the provided flap, discharges way better that way.
Also can put the bagger on with the chute open, sends some clippings into the bag for less clumping.

I purchased a Honda HRX217VKA 3 weeks ago because it doesn't bog down in tall wet grass like the Toro did in the backyard mowing scene in your video. I used lawnboy 2 cycle commercial mowers for 50 years and the one I bought in 2003 blew the crankshaft seal. If Toro had sent me a mower to review, I'd still buy the Honda HRX217VKA instead.

I got the same red/black Super Recycler too! Coming from a 15 year old Craftsman the Personal Pace takes some getting used to when backing up. The Flex is a nice feature. I noticed like an engine knocking sound on mine too, maybe that how the Toro engine sounds. I've checked my oil levels and where it's supposed to be on the dip stick. There is a Toro stripping kit that runs for about 100 bucks.

I just bought the same mower 2 days ago as well. I had a call for about 1/4 acre of up hill mowing with an overgrown lawn with tons of blackberry in it. Grass was 2.5 ft tall, but the self propel pushes right through it and I never felt like this mower was bogging down. I was bagging the entire thing too (people don't really mulch here). Needless to say I have a new bi weekly client! (typically we aim for every 10 days here, but some people have budget for their rentals)

I have a Super Recycler. What do I think of it? It needs more power! I've had four Toro's with the Personal Pace drive system. The PP system is great when new but with use becomes problomatic. It needs a redesign!
-MORE- *ENGINE* Those weak 160cc (even the Honda GCV) and smaller engines turning consumer level blade tip speeds have some difficulty when it's growing season in healthy thick or somewhat wet grass. You most definitely have to stay proactive with it or you'll get the clumping unless you raise the height.
-MORE- *PERSONAL PACE* Out of the box it's great. However when it gets some use it will start to not want to fully release and becomes a pain in the rear. All of mine have this issue within a year. This causes it to turn hard, to push forward hard, and to pull back hard. Releasing the PP handle a couple of feet before you turn or back up works ok to stop that, but it will still happen at times. The only fix that I know of is to disassemble part of the wheel/gear assembly, clean and reassemble. However it will happen again. It's an easy moneymaker for repair shops. It's easy for a do it yourselfer but you shouldn't have to. It's just not a great design for the long haul. I will definitely not purchase another one with that system. Maybe a Toro Commercial because it doesn't have that system and it has a bigger engine.
TORO'S I'VE OWNED OR USED REGULARLY IN HOMEOWNER ENVIRONMENT- TimeMaster. 223cc engine- Decent cut but Not enough power because of the loss from the belt and pulley setup. Also seems to clog the deck fairly easily. -SuperRecycler w/Honda 160gcv- Good cut. It's not balanced very good if you use the bag. It doesnt fill the bag much before the front starts bouncing.
Not enough power. Hell even honda went from a 190cc engine to a 200cc engine in their upper residential 21inch offering. That should tell you something about consumer mowers.
-22inch Recycler- Not enough power and a so so cut. This thing also loves to strip out the plastic gears on the rear wheels. Replaced a set with the same factory ones. When it happened again I modified it by using parts from a different mower with metal gears. Plastic gears was their update..Great move there Toro...
-SmartStow with Reverse- My mom purchased this one to replace her 22inch Recycler. This thing has a so so cut and has had drive problems in both directions. Once again if you have a healthy lawn you better be mowing quite frequently because.. where's the power?..... Personal Pace *NEVER AGAIN*

I cut my customers lawns long 3.75 toro C up to mid June and then 4 toro B for the summer. Helps keep the grass green and growing during the droughts. If the grass is super long bag plus side chute lol.

Take the side discharge off. These mowers are known for their mulching. The deck's alluminum. Best 21" cut. These mowers can cut wet grass and make it look good. You can cut in the rain. Little mess. A bit pricey over other 21s but I have a bunch of other practically new 21s in garage (doing nothing) thinking I could save a buck. Upgrade to the 8.75 engine to push through thick and wet.

Ive been using that mower for the last three years. Mine is red and has the larger back wheels. I have found that overfilling the gas tank causes the air filter to fill up with gas and makes it harder to start. Once I got that problem solved, it starts on the first pull. It has paid for itself ten times over now. I did replace the side discharge chute last year, little ears that hold it on wore out. The easy store handle makes it easier to clean the underside. It was also a good value at about $400. That is my very first self propelled mower.

    • @eddylee587
      @eddylee587 Před 3 lety +1

@@Johnny-dw6un I have both. I think the HRX does a better job of cutting and sucking up all the grass clippings. As the super recycler does best for returning the clippings back to the lawn. I'm mostly like bagging my lawn 90% of the time. I did check my RPMS on both mowers. Both were set lower than spec. I set both mowers at 3300 RPM's. The HRX was at 2900. The Toro was at 2700🙄. A guy on CZcams who works on these mowers said to always check what the factory set it at. Toro seems to set their mowers under spec for safety reasons. Even though the manual reads 3150-3300. My mowers are older. Both bought off marketplace super reasonable. At this time I like the HRX cutting quality. But I prefer the Toro drive system.🙄 I'll update more later. Hope this helps.

Nice, I have the toro striping kit for my 22 inch deck. It works pretty good, you just fill it with sand and hook it all up.

I run 2 toro heavy duty 21s(Honda) and they are monsters, tall grass or short, wet or dry. They get through anything best purchase for the city jobs, due to a lot of gates.

I’m just someone who loves to take care of my own yard know of the good brands out there but these Toros are something different. Lawnmowers at least. Especially the commercial line. They just seem to do a phenomenal job.

I have two of the time masters and I can tell you they are worth every dollar you’re going to spend on them. They start almost every time on the first pull and cut very well.

ISOtunes Pro’s. We’ve used them for like 3 years now, never had any real issues, I think they’re really good for lawn care. They’re an affiliate partner, Brians10 saves $10 with them online. 👊

Really good mower Brian, IMO one of the best out there for residential! Just curious what your fertilizer program is for your Mom's house, looks like some area's need some soil amending! The core aeration will help in some of the thin spots for sure but you need to keep the fert steady! Maybe a Soil test is in order! Thanks for the quick review! Chad Upstate NY

Hey Brian I worked for a Complete Lawn Service Company in high school then a few years later in lower Westchester County, NY. I’ve been watching your page for about 6 to 9 months. I also snowplow on every now and then when he needs help. I have a ton of questions in the difference’s from how I was trained to cut, trim, Ryan lawn plugger, also Ryan over seeder. Why do you much? Just about every client we had it’s Chappaqua, NY you know where Bill and Hillary Clinton live. If a chair was moved they call because it wasn’t placed in the four previous indentation’s! I was trained in every aspect of how and what to use to get consistency and a lawn that looked better than Yankee Stadium! Broad leaf weed control Trimex Fertilizer schedule’s and the only thing he used was Johnathan Green Lawn Products. Now I’m not judging I believe your a huge reason some people who were on the fence go all in. One thing it’s hard work if you don’t like either wearing long pants when it’s 90°F or getting your legs pinged and bitten and covered in grass then it’s not for you go home. I personally have learned a few things from you! Thanks dude. Ok my question’s why don’t you ever use grass catchers? Over the weeks the thatch could act as a fertilizer but you lawn will look like crap. I noticed you say “let’s go throw down some stripes and I’ll be back” those stone edgers with all due respect wtf? 😂 I do like your trailer set up! I ran the trailer witch was the only thing large enough to carry a 48” Walker GHS 2 belt driven Bobcats both Cats had those heavy steel grass catchers but the old 48” Bobcat could cut Yankee Stadium our crew used to challenge each other who cut better which is what I was thinking about before Covid 19 screwed it all up, I was going to challenge you to see who laid not only the straightest stripes but the cleanest now grass clumps from mulching and no early turn marks at the end of the stripes. I’m not the best but it’s like riding a bike! My biggest question and this seems to be the norm everywhere except the Northeast? In my humble opinion using grass catchers is a big part of a healthy lawn. I believe that’s why thatcher’s were invented? Anyway correct me if I’m wrong when mulching don’t you walk the same area of grass than using a catcher you never walk over one section of lawn twice? Thanks for all the great video’s! Love your plowing style but too big for residential Jeeps with bear claw chains on all four tires and 4 low can push 3’ of heavy snow plus turning around is a piece of NY Apple pie!!! Thanks Brian looking forward to your response!
