Oh, Stax! I needed this today. My mother passed a few days ago, and this makes me think of her...the love and good vibes of the original hip-hop warms my heart and soul. 🙏💜
I’m so sorry to hear that, you are in my prayers. Feel free to reach out to me on Instagram🙏🏽💙glad I was able to uplift you and bring back the joyful memories
So sorry for Your loss...💜🙏
I am so sorry for your loss.
Old school hip hop. This was late '70s, early '80s.
Lot of early rap used disco and funk beats. Because that was the music of the era back then. '70s and '80s. Dance vibes. Lot of their music played at dance parties, skating rinks, wedding parties, movies, etc. And sampled on later years rap and R&B songs. Check out "Apache (Jump on It)" video next!
Check out Kurtis Blow, too! "The Breaks" and "Basketball" as well. Same vibe an era.
This was stolen from Chic and Grandmaster Cas directly
🙌🙌🔥🙌
Stax, you can't imagine how important this song was to raps growth and longevity. It is literally the foundation of rap crossing over and going worldwide. The bars are on point, the story telling in between is nothing short of sensational, and, as you mentioned, the breath control is masterful. Anybody that grew up when this came out (I was 7 going on 8) can recite at least 95% of this version and the extended version. Its often overlooked but it's one of the most important songs in hip hop history.
Factsssss
Thank you, yes!! I as in 7th grade and we memorized every word & can still sing along with it almost to a tee!!
This is from my generation.love❤❤
💙💙💙
I love the big smile you get when you like a beat or a bar. Seeing you dance and watch music of all times really brightens my day!
Awww thank you 💙💙💙
It came out in 1979, a great feel good get together song. 🔥🔥
Your reaction is Priceless 🔥🔥🔥
🙌🙌‼️‼️
Yeah, this is straight 70s bro. During the disco era. Definitely the beginning of hip-hop music for sure. The Sugarhill gang are the pioneers.
1978
🔥🔥🔥
The song king tim the 3rd was first but didnt blow up like rappers delight. Those two songs were the beginning of hip hop industry recordings. Before that they were making tapes and mixtapes
@@travisyarbrough4033 *Recorded* August 2, 1979 *Released* September 16, 1979
Woo hoo... one of the most groundbreaking songs ever. OG foundation material! I still know every single word to this song!
Yessss, hey mamaaa💙💙💙
Brings back memories. I was in the 3rd grade when this came out and we had a classroom party. My sister let me bring her Sugar Hill Gang record for the party. Man I was the man that day hahaha Keep up the good work homie
‼️‼️🙌🙌
Classic. Salute Grandmaster Caz for writing most of this.
Good Looks, I was waiting for someone to post this! Stax oughta look into the controversy.
I was looking for this comment
He wrote Big Bank Hank's verse.
My first concert
It was the first rap song on vinyl 1979
🙌🙌‼️‼️
This is exactly how it was at the clubs in the 70's , all kinds of people getting along, and having so much fun!!!!
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Second hip-hop song on wax but was the most popular. The first was King Tim III by the Fatback Band. 🤙🏼
AHH!! Real Rap
K.C. and the Sunshine Band gives these same vibes . I'm your Boogie Man is a good start off point for this band.
This is really old-school❤
Groovy groovy groovy thank you thank you thank you awesome❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it
This is the JAM! The more you hear hip hop the more you see Rappers Delight's influence popping out all over the place! It's dope, and a good time track that just makes you want to MOVE! 🔥🔥🔥
These Are The Breaks and If I Ruled The World by Kurtis Blow are also some old school treasures to react to!
💙💙🙌
Yes this song hits mainstream. I think it was at the early 80's at the age of 12/13 when i first heard this song. I was obssesed to know all the words of the 15 minute version of this song. Can you imagine how often i run this song as a german at this young age to know them all. Great memories
This song started my love for Rap! I had the single, 12" and 12" Picture disc - The song was so big!!
Sang along with every word.
I was 9-10 years old when this came out.
We all loved it.
Every day someone at the bus stop or during PE or at recess or on the bus ride home or on the weekend would just break out in;
‘I Said a hip-hop, the hippie to the hippie
The hip, hip-a-hop and you don't stop rockin' . . .
Many would chime in with the next verse.
Instant ‘Good Times’ leave your cares behind. 😉
🙌🙌🔥🔥
Some real good funk/dance rap... they definitely nailed their flow to the beat. Definitely a good party jam.
🔥🔥🔥
I was in 7th grade when this came out and me and my friends would sing this walking home. It sure made walking home from school not seem as long.
💙💙
This IS 7th grade for me !! The year it was released!! Constant airplay ! This was the Jam!! A sound all its own at the time it came out . The is pure Nostalgia for me💯⭐️
🙌🙌‼️‼️
❤I jacked this album from my older sister when I was 8yrs old in '79. I would play it non-stop when she wasn't home. It made me become a life long hip hop head. Great choice Stax.
Oh wowww lmaooo amazing story, thanks Brice 💙
If you’re ready to party and you’re dressed to kill somebody say Sugar Hill!
8th Wonder is my favorite by them. My older sister had Sugar Hill and Whodini records, my little best friend and I were totally mesmerized by the them. The lyrics are forever imprinted on my brain, and hers, too, I bet. :)
Whodini!!! The Freaks Come out at Night!!!
This was my first exposure to hip hop. On the radio. My bestie and I would call our local radio station and request it. And I'm a metal head😂 but I loved it.
🙌🙌‼️‼️
My cousin had this on 12 in vinyl 1st press and I wanted it so bad but she wouldn't budge. Love your reactions!
This song was a revelation. I was in middle school when it came out. We'd have to take our tape recorder and wait til it came on the radio and hit record. We memorized every single word, and you bet your life a huge % of people in their 50s & 60s remember almost every word of this. It went into deep memory storage 🤣
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
40s too
I pretty sure this was the very first rap song to hit it high on the charts. Love it!!!
💙💙💙
Owned a copy as a kid on vinyl LP the year it came out. Had to beg my mom to get it for me. Lol Still know every word. Great memories. Thanks for this reaction!
🙌🙌‼️‼️
It's about damn time!
This is from the the very beginnings of Hip Hop/Rap. You got to respect the originality and fun in this song.
Without a doubt 💙
Sandra Bullock had this totally memorized. Check out the video. She nails it. 😮😆👍
Every time that song plays I can’t help but rap along. I think that applies to just about everyone that grew up with this!
So gooood
Reminds me of my roller skating days. I still say Hotel,Motel Holiday Inn! check out Double Dutch Bus by Frankie Smith!
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
The beginning, all hip hop fans should know these early tunes.
notice you can understand every word, they tell a story, and the lyrics are never ending, everyone was having fun not worrying about "being cool"....those were the days hahaha
💯💯‼️
What we called old school growing up. ❤❤
Have you checked out The Pharcyde yet?
Drop or Passin Me By are their two most popular songs but they have a nice catalog. Great as always!
Yes I have
Check out "Newcleus - Jam On It 1984" the 9:41 version.....LOVE this song...killer beat, killer lyrics and flow, great to drive to (and skate to back in the old days haha)
Betttt
Great to see you appreciate this gem of a record. This song introduced us to hip hop, but some give it credit for being the first rap song EVER - there is one other song but NOT on vinyl. I was 20 years old when this was released in 1979. This caused a major change in the music of the coming 80s. My club scene days of that time was off-the-chain🎵💃🤗😍
Let’s gooooo‼️🙌🙌🙌
Friday nights at the skating rink 💜💜💜
Littttt
One of the first albums I ever bought
🙌🙌🙌
Man, this was great. Brought back so many good memories. I loved this song so much, I learned the words. Still sticks in my head till this day. Thanks Stax
Thanks for listening
Great reaction! This song is a banger til this day! Another fine product from 79 like me! Lol keep up the dope reactions!
🔥🔥🔥
This song just makes me smile. Such a simpler time. Great reaction.
💙💙💙💙
Finally!! ❤❤ let's go!
I can’t NOT chair dance when I hear this song.
The background sample is the song good times
Shout out to CHIC 😎... which that boogie is a jam also
🙌🙌‼️‼️
Add "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa & The Soul Sonic Force to your list.
Africa Bambaataa is a must must, the man coined the word hip-hop.
I'm not gonna say how old I am BUT.........I bought this record new when it first came out!!🤣
🔥🔥🔥
Definite Hit, now you got to play some breakdance music. You would really love listening to music. This Era here had the best beats in the hip hop Era...
Planet Rock, Play at your own risk, Jam On It, Clear, Hip Hop Bee Bop, Numbers, Pack Jam, 122 bpm....ETC
many others
Will do for sure, thanks for the requests
@StaxReacts Thanks Bro
Warning: you will be up and dancing/breaking or poping...
Oh you just brought back my teen years! Thanks for the reaction.
No problem!!
Hell yeah. Never fails. Elite class song.
🙌🏾🔥🙏
AKSHUALLY, King Tim III (Personality Jock) was the first hip hop song. Not bad, either, although you can definitely hear the disco era in it still!
The song that started the hip hop era.
My daughter does cross-stitching (basically making pictures and stuff out of little x's on special fabric) and she usually makes everyone in our family one for Christmas. I have quite a few now, one of which is a 5x7 piece of fabric with block letters 4x6 filling it, and it's that "ISAIDAHIPHOPTHEHIBBYTOTHEHIBBYTO..." that he did at the end. Haha!
(I also have one that looks like a traditional 'sampler', lovely little border top and bottom, a couple of tulips on the sides, and it says "Shimmy ya, shimmy yam, shimmy yay, gimme the mic so I can take it away", LOL!)
😂😂😂💙💙💙
If you’re getting into old school rap, you need to listen to Grandmaster Flash ‘The Message’
czcams.com/video/lQx31ORGwPw/video.html he did!
I’ve reacted to it already
Newcleus' Jam On It. It's a masterpiece.
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I still remember tha album cover it was light Blue, i used to like this and the rick james centerfold album. My told start buying your own albums back in the 80s.
The song being smapled in this is Good Times by Chic (pronounced sheek) check out the song released June 1979.
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
This is the first rap song I heard in college in 1979. Fun fact, at dance they started with Good Times by Chic and then mixed this in and I thought, the dj sure is talking a long time 😄. I didn't have a clue. Later, my sisters and I played the extended version and wrote every word down. Still know them. Good Times.
This song is where the term Hip-Hop came from. The local DJ in NY said people kept calling in asking for her to play that "hip hop song again". And from there... hip-hop.
💙💙💙
This song is not where the term Hip Hop comes from it's just the song that made the term popular with mainstream America. The term Hip-Hop was created by Keef Cowboy of Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five. Cowboy created the term while teasing a friend who had just joined the U.S. Army, by scat singing the words "hip/hop/hip/hop" in a way that mimicked the rhythmic cadence of soldiers marching. He later worked the "hip hop" cadence into a part of his stage performance. Lovebug Starski, Keef Cowboy, and DJ Hollywood used the term when the music was still known as disco rap.
Those first lines in Rapper's Delight were taken directly from Cowboy. In fact the words hip and hop being used together can be traced back to the 1950's. In those days teen house parties were referred to by older people as hippity hops.
@@2apocalypsex Cool. Did u even read what I wrote? I did not say THEY invented hip hop I said the term came from Rapper's Delight because people kept calling the radio station asking her, the DJ, to play that "hip hop" song. They didn't know the name of the song but the guys kept saying hip hop so the callers juat asked for that hip hop song. This is true. Gotta read what I actually wrote.
The Beginning.
I feel ancient and honored at the same time lol. I think my mama had this record. She was very progressive LOL
💙💙💙😂😂
My mother did too! But she also loved disco music. lol
@@joesmith8725 LOL my mom and my grandma enabled my Prince obsession in the 80s. My saved and recently sober dad was not amused..
@@mztweety1374 LOL. Cool
When Rap was still innocent and fun
💙💙💙
There are multiple versions of this, at least one over 10 minutes long. Classic, I know it word for word.
First song made and distributed to Radio and Television. Sylvia Robinson first black female label owner SUGARHILL RECORDS.
Went looking for rappers after being at a party and see it for the first time. In a Pizza store BIG BANK HANK worked as a Pizza delivery guy.
He was rapping on break
And she seen him and asked if he wanted to record a track. He wasn't a rapper his friends were rappers, GRAND MASTER CAZ of the Cold Crush Brothers a popular group and Caz was and still is a Beast on the 🎤. CAZ is short for Casanova, and that
Is the rhyme he stole from CAZ in the Rappers
Delight.
🙌🙌🔥🔥
This song was released in 1979 during the Dsico era, hence the clothes
🙏🏽🙌
CRASH! Yeah this was back when there no such thing as copyright infringement in music, you didn't have to pay for sampling/ripping other people's music. This is 'Good Times' by Chic. There is another called 'Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel' that uses this hook-worth a listen. Top job Stax machine. Nice one. ❤🇬🇧👍❤CRASH!
Thank you so much, I’ll add both to the list
I was looking for a comment like this, A real nod has to be made to the funk bands that inspired this style of early hip hop. Songs like Mistadobalina are entirely cuts of other tracks. Stax, if you wanna dig into the influence rabbithole, i suggest: parliment funkadelic, sly and the family stone, booker T and the MG's Etc.
"Rapper's Delight" was the first commercially successful hip-hop single of 1979. However, "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" by The Fatback Band is known as the first recorded record of hip-hop, since it was released on March 25, 1979 - czcams.com/video/ojQqAnlrW_M/video.html
I was 15 at the time-(1979)my moms actually got this for me(it was put in a brown paper sleeve)the start of musical art-for real. Too bad you didn't listen to the full version, but this is cool
I’ll check it out
Another great reaction Stax!
Appreciate that
This was 1979. First major rap song. I was 8.
🔥🔥
Born in 1971 here👍🏾
Damn! I saw the words The Roots and I thought you were diving in to one of the best groups in hip hop.
🙏🏽🙏🏽‼️‼️
❤❤❤❤❤❤
💙💙💙hey trishhh
this came on heels of disco...disco was dead and hiphop took off!!!!
We danced.
Another early hip hop classic: Rapture by Blondie
Bettt

With a woman who wanted to be diverse in her music

LOL I feel ya on the food thing. My wife was raised with food cooked that way, and I was raised with food cooked the other way. We have totally incompatible tastes when it comes to home cooking. I can't eat the food the way she grew up on. Waaaay overcooked meat.
🙌🙌‼️‼️
Everything I'm talking about is in videos. It's also in the BEEF DVD series from the 2000s
It's in the first series.
It's after the BUSY BEE
VS KOOL MOE DEE. You need to check that out.
You seem like a real student of Hip Hop. Better than most.

Hey Stax, here's another rapper to give a listen, if interested. Big Daddy Kane - Ain't no Half-Steppin' (Official Video)" (by the channel: Janadrian Bettard) --Antonio Hardy better known by his professional name "Big Daddy Kane" he is an American rapper, producer and actor, who began his career in 1986 as a member of the "Juice Crew." He's widely regarded as one of the most influential and skilled MC's in hip-hop. Rolling Stone ranked this song that I've suggested as #25 on the list of "The 50 Greatest hip-hop songs of all time." Calling him a "master wordsmith of rap's late Golden-age and a huge influence on a whole generation of MC's. Peace out~
Wu-Syndicate( They represent Virginia) "Where Was Heaven" . Watch video. Peace👊🏾 Keep up the great work!
💯‼️🙌
So if a terminator went back in time and took these guys out before they made this,...........would there be hip hop/rap?!😮
Yeah there would. Though Sugar HIll is important and foundational it is not the origin, look at pigmeat markum 1968 (czcams.com/video/NRS62nccwmw/video.html) or Gil Scot Heron 1971 (czcams.com/video/vwSRqaZGsPw/video.html) for earlier refrences of hiphop
You should listen to the 14 minute version.
This is the transition from disco to hip hop. Sugarhill Gang were earlier innovators that took the disco vibe and dance floor scene and married it with the street
🙌🙌🙌
Lots of history to this song. They took Grandmaster Caz's rhyme book and used his rhymes without crediting him. Big Bank Hank didn't even change the lyrics. In this song he says he is Casanova Fly . . . that is Grandmaster Caz's other name. If you want a response to this song--MC Delight by Grandmaster Caz. On top of this, Hank says--he is the grandmaster with the 3 MCs. There are only 3 MCs in Sugarhill Gang, he didn't even change that.
🙏🏽🙏🏽🔥🔥
this was when it felt good....they partied....smh indescribable.....what at time!!!
Hip Hop an you don't stop. Is this the song that coined the term "Hip Hop" ?
Haven’t looked at all ur vids….did u do Jam on it??
I have not
@@StaxReacts it’s another one that us girls used to watch all the neighborhood boys break dance to!! It’s “Jam On It “- by Newcleus (sp?)
