🇴🇲SALALAH, OMAN - Living in a villa in Oman: who would have thought it? Today I'm showing you the inside of the house where I lived alone some time ago. At first I couldn't sleep: the house was huge and I could hear the wind whistling at night and I feared there were jinn, spirits, as they are called around here. Then I calmed down: Salalah is a super safe city and you can even sleep with the door open. And there were no spirits, by the way. Welcome!

WHO AM I?
In 1999 I volunteered in an orphanage in Kenya and it changed my life. I then worked in Albania with unprivileged girls and kids for 3 years. I came back to Italy and started teaching at primary school but I wasn't happy.
So in 2010 I took the decision to follow my passion, not my pension. I first volunteered in Cambodia for a year, then opened a blog and travelled around South East Asia, China, Iran and Oman, always showing the lives of real locals, away from the tourist spots.
My goal - my mission in life - has always been to inspire people to be brave, follow their passion, open their minds and discover the kindness of other people and cultures.

Aww thank you 🙏🏼💕
@@toohappytobehomesick how did you manage to sleep alone in that big house? No close houses near by in case of emergency. How about emergency health needs, hospitals if need to get to ER… my goodness you are brave
You can’t imagine how scared I was the first week! But not for the lack of neighbours (Oman is incredibly safe, you can sleep with your front door open, I don’t even close my car in Salalah), but because here they believe in the jinns (spirits who roam in the houses) so I was terrified 😂but then I got used to it. I have to admit that I prefer to have neighbours and live in a little more busy area.
Concerning hospitals and ER, the Sultan Qaboos Hospital was just at 10-15 minutes by car from the house
@toohappytobehomesick haha yes definitely! It's like a very rural private setting where you are! I love these experiences, though, such good reminders for life, and even appreciating human interaction etc.

I can't believe the sultan gives a free piece of land!!!!😱 In Australia you even have to pay taxes on the land that you own! That villa is amazing, so big!!
Think about the taxes we have to pay in Italy as well 😢 it’s a huge villa but alone is a little scary 😬

Very nice you see the stars
I love the fact that we can still be in contact with the nature in Oman
From what was said, the land was given free to build on.
That's great.
But what was not said was:
- is there property taxes?
- how much did it cost to build that beautiful home?
- is it expensive to live there?
To answer to your questions:
1. The Sultanate of Oman does not levy any taxes on personal income, including income from capital gains or property
2. I don’t know about this specific house, it depends on how many floors it has and the size of it but let’s say a medium sized house costs around 50.000 OMR (Oman rial) to be built
3. The south of Oman is not expensive in terms of rents (100 to 200 OMR per month for a flat) and food

2 questions: 1. What do the cows eat in that topography? 2. How to use a Turkish toilet?
You Squat
To answer to your question:
1. Cows can eat grass directly in the hills and mountains around Salalah (Dhofar region). Here it’s green most of the year thanks to the khareef season (monsoon season) that happens from June to the end of August
2. You have to squat in order to use a Turkish toilet
My husband is Omani and 39 and he is still waiting for his piece of land in Muscat 😂
Nooo omg 😅why are they so slow lately? What’s the reason behind that?
@@toohappytobehomesick honestly we don’t know !! So I never heard in Muscat that Omanis got land for free from the government! Maybe in rural areas where no one wants to live. Definitely not in Muscat. A plot starts easily at 100 000 omr and upwards for around 600 m2 depending where in Muscat.

That's a great idea! However the house was not mine and the owner wants to rent it on a long term basis.
Ps. I love South Africa! I lived for 2 months in Johannesburg 😃
I love the home but I like a big bathtub I did not see any bathtub in the bathrooms. Do they use them there or just shower
I’ve never seen a house with a bathtub in the south of Oman, I think it’s because people there have to save water as it’s very dry for most of the year
I'm Kashif planning to visit Oman
Always welcome
Nice big house. My query is, there doesn't seem to be many other people in the neighbourhood/nearby. So if you are a family person with kids then your kids will not have many other kids to play with. Also, this being in such remote place, how quick are you likely to get ambulances/emergency services if you needed?
Basically, you can't live there without having 1 or 2 cars.
I’m single so it was ok for me - and I didn’t stay all year long there, I like less secluded places - but for people with kids it might not be the best option. However, for any emergency the Sultan Qaboos Hospital is just around 15 minutes away

Hi there, excellent vlogs and information. Can you please suggest if 2500 OMR per month are sufficient for a family of three? I mean will I be able to save enough. Please help and advise.
Hello, are you going to be in Muscat or Salalah? The last is cheaper than the capital city in terms of rent and cost of living. It all depends if your son/daughter should attend an international school. If not, then 2500 OMR is more than sufficient. Otherwise, the international school fees I’ve heard being very high
Let me ask same question
How can someone move to Oman and find work here? Is it possible to retire there? Thank you
Oman doesn't have a retirement visa program like some other countries. Expats need a valid visa to remain in the country (employment). One can buy a property in designated tourist complexes, which allows to obtain a residence visa. In order to find a job in Oman I always suggest to go to Oman and search once in the country. Bear in mind that Oman has a law called “Omanization of Oman”: certain jobs can only be done by Omani (for example tour guiding in English language)
Hi very nice vlog, yes salalah weather is different from the GCC countries 3 months rainy season continues, where are from.
Yes, you are right, now it’s khareef season!

Hi there, excellent vlogs and information. Can you please suggest if 2500 OMR per month are sufficient for a family of three? I mean will I be able to save enough.
that is more than enough trust me
In my opinion it’s a good salary for Salalah, life is not expensive here at all. But you have to see what school your kids will attend. International schools are expensive in Oman like anywhere in the world I think
how much do you pay for rent and what areA IS THIS CALLED?

May I ask you how much does it cost to rent such villa in this area? And of course price to buy. Thanks!
Hi, my sponsor told me that it costs around 200 OMR (Oman Rial) a month to rent a villa like that one in that area.

Oman is super safe at anytime of the day and night, I’ve never had any problem since I first arrived back in 2012. I would respect the local dress code - no shorts, skirts below the knees and no tops. You can rent a car and drive by yourself without any problem.
