The first five and a half minutes of this video are gold! The explanation of "how fortunate we are" and the 5 minute mark where you say "don't get so wrapped up in the numbers, have some fun". These are two things that I do not fully appreciate. For me going to the gym is about building strength and it should be fun. If not, why are we doing it? Great job Alan.

METAL MUSIC DAD TIP: I got my kids to not be afraid of metal by introducing them to it slowly and calling it "Dinosaur music". Start out with some melodic stuff first that way it's not too brutal . Then work your way up to the heavier stuff . It works like a charm and they ask for it at least once a week. Good luck!

This. It’s funny because I remember being a kid, maybe around 6-8, and the guy who lived in the apartment below us would blast metal. It would scare the crap out of me, i would imagine that he had a literal portal to hell in the apartment. Anyway fast forward 25 years and i have fully indoctrinated my kids, 5yo and 2yo. They immediately start headbanging any time they hear it. They just know it as “daddy’s music”
To say it’s the coolest feeling in the world is an understatement.

    • @manimal667
      @manimal667 Před 5 lety +6

@@Sammy9262 in full disclosure, your kids will still listen to kids crap music. The point is not to have them listen to metal only. That is a pipe dream and not realistic. The point is so YOU can listen to metal without fear of your kids screaming and crying in terror when listening to metal and maybe have the luck of them asking to play some metal. I started my kids on some melodic / celtic death metal with a sprinkling of the more commercial In Flames stuff. Nothing with curse words that they can understand just so I don't have to deal with them repeating it in public. Then I just when progressively heavier. I can now listen to Whitechapel with no issues. Weellll, we'll see in 10 years what issues may arise.

    Hey Alan,
Just want to say that your message that training is a privilege and a gift resonates so much with me and I really really respect you for saying it . I've been one of the people at the hospital stuck on forearm crutches and a chair. I used to be a soccer player and loved weight training, then I developed a degenerative spinal disease and a rare type of regional neuropathy in my feet. I've been in physical therapy and care for 5 years now, and I just started to pick up the barbell again. It's been a really long and emotional journey for me, being frustrated watching my friends do things that I still can't do, but I'm finally able to go to the gym and squat and clean!
You and other fitness/weightlifters have been a big inspiration and you should be proud of what you're doing, you're inspiring people, and still staying humble and that takes a lot of heart.
    Keep doing what you're doing!
    Malcolm

Just keep working and improving your form, and you'll get there. It took me 5 years to get to 295, but now that I'm there, I can taste 315. As you get better, you'll learn how to train better, so just keep it up. Watch/read as much information as you can to help speed some things along, but ultimately, you should experiment with your lifting and technique until it feels right. I've only recently begun to learn how well "screwing your feet into the ground" works for me to keep a good bar path during a squat.

I started Starting Strength two years ago and was squatting around 225 X 5 for 3 sets when I started. I stuck with it even though it’s boring AF and hit 315 in a matter of about 10 weeks. Once I Hit 365 on the squat I swapped over to the Texas Method and was doing 5 sets of 405 x 5 before I knew it. My bench skyrocketed from 215 for a single to 250 x 5 in what felt like no time. I’m now doing the Juggernaut AI Coaching now and the gains keep coming. I highly suggest that same route.

Not reaching those numbers I hit before the incident just resulted in a vicious loop of more confidence loss, lower numbers, and less training days.

I was only resting about 3 minutes between those sets, and that quickly became not enough time. I rested 5-7 minutes between my next 3 sets, and I made all my reps. Lesson: aim to rest as little as you need, but sometimes that's still 5-7 minutes.

My point, though, was there's no shame in taking more rest when needed. So again - take as little rest as possible, but ultimately still take as much rest as you need. Thanks dude. Your videos always brighten up my day. Great to see you back. I’ve been through this Dad/baby break too and can relate. Also, I’ve just had to change up my routine again since the wife has returned to work post baby, so this kinda program is time relevant to me and exactly the sorta no stress approach I needed.
    Thanks again.

I had a collarbone fracture early january and I was training for my meet in march... I never got injured before and I didn't pay attention to safety outside the gym. You can't predict when you'll get hurt or when you'll get sick, but these things just happen. Don't start complaining, do what you can do and it'll motivate you even more when you will get back in the gym!

I had to go to the hospital and wasn't able to lift for most of October and November, and I've only been lifting for maybe 3 years. Right before I was sick, I hit the biggest I've ever hit on Deadlift (505), deadlift (375) and bench (275)- i really love the advice to just enjoy the struggle, that's what I've been focusing on. As much as I want to get right back into it, I'm using this time get my body in shape, and to just enjoy fucking lifting again hahaha I absolutely love it it's so fun

Congratulations to you on the baby! Checked out the video. Myo-Reps sound like Dante's Dogcrap training concept to failure, rather than a specific rep goal for a Dante set. For Dante's work, lift first set, keep taking breaks to breathe until you get your rep goal. For example: 15 rep goal. You get 8. Breathe for 2 - 5 slow breaths, do a set of 5, slow breaths, get your last two. That's one Set. Myo-Reps take this same concept to failure, rather than a rep goal.

Great stuff, Alan. Been going through something similar...rehabing a back injury all winter and it's finally feeling pretty good. Did tempo squats with 135 on the bar and I've never been happier, lol! Appreciate every moment.

You just brought Sunshine to my UK winter! I'm back to newbie gains at the gym after a long break from MS relapse. What you said at the start was beautifully poignant and right on! I'm just doing alternate days of strength and cardio right now... but your plan makes a lot more sense in doing couple days strength training together. Might join ya! xxx
