Everett Poole Deaf Community

Capt. Everett Poole (1930 -2022) fish dealer, selectman and town leader in Chilmark recalls fishing with his father and the convenience/necessity of using sign language to communicate with fishermen in other boats because of the noisy Lathrop engines. He looks back at his youth when most everyone in town could converse to some extent in sign language. As a teenager, taking it for granted, he wishes that he worked harder at learning it as he realizes now that a historic time passed by so quickly.
