  • In the Museum’s current exhibit They Planted the Seeds: Creating Jewish Community on Martha’s Vineyard, you can hear the tales and watch oral history videos of some of the early generations of settlers talking of the challenges and joys of establishing themselves in an unknown and non-Jewish environment while maintaining their Jewish traditions and spiritual life. Alice Issokson Shapiro (1917 - 2007) tells of her parent’s leaving Russian territories, where life had become untenable for Jewish people as they faced hostilities and poverty and how their long journey brought them to the Vineyard where they worked hard to create a productive and successful lives.
