    I really like the OneUp carbon bars. They have nice flex engineered into them and it does make a difference. I do not really use a torque wrench every time i just remember not to tighten things too much. Four years, still good, not worried.

    Contrary to over-tightening, I torqued my carbon bars into my stem and used a grip paste.. Had a big compression on a trail on Sunday. Handlebars spun loose under me and launched me Otb. Back to alloy I go!

    Olly is the man! I have the same opinion, seen too many handle bars snap ejecting the rider out the front.

    I couldn't agree will Olly on carbon handlebars more. Loads of people quote cars when it comes to carbon fibre and I like to remined them that a Porsche 911 carbon brake disc is a) £5,000 and b) REALLY thick. Carbon handle bars are thin and the clamping is an issue but also if you lean your bike on something and it falls over. In theory you should replace the handlebars or take them to a carbon specialist to check they are safe. Ain't nobody got time for that!

      I don't know if you can compare carbon brake rotors to a bicycle handlebar, two completely different animals

      "carbon" brake rotors on cars have a ceramic matrix which works almost completly the opposite way(and are used for totally different purposes(one is a strong and lightweight structure to handle loads the other one is to bridge cracks in a ceramic composite optimised to survive high temperatures) than the polymer matrix of a carbon handlebar, rims(which live a tougher live than bars), Frames or car structures
      also you are the first one i heared comparing those things so youre argument does not make any sense

    yo! Im with Olly on the carbon thing. I crash enough that the last thing i want to worry is, if I cracked the bar or anything that is made of carbon. Alloy all the way!

    Wholeheartedly agree.
    Also, every time I hit the deck and pick up my steed after it came to a stop from tumbling on without me, I'd question the handlebar to be still safe because thin carbon doesnt like to be smacked. 😬 One less thing to worry about.
    I'm also not a fan of carbon cranks for cost reasons. Last time I crashed hard enough to break a bone, it also ripped the pedal out of the alloy crank on the side I crashed onto - the threads were gone, pedal still good. I suspect the whole thread insert would have come out of a carbon crank. With alloy, you could try to fix it with a helicoil insert or just buy a new crank arm or set at the fraction of the cost of the carbon equivalent or possibly the same cost of a carbon repair... not my cup o tea.

    I really appreciate your perspective and reasoning around costs. I always ride with my now 15yr son so when I upgrade/replace my bike or parts I end up buying 2 of everything. I'm pretty sure my abilities can't tell the difference between carbon vs alloy etc but some kids like to have pro names on things, so thinking about affordability for people like me is awesome.

    I'm with Olly. As a fellow ham-fisted home bike mechanic, I worry about over-tightening carbon. Also press-fit or glued threads. Euughh. Alloy can always be bent back into shape and re-tapped 😀

    I just switched from carbon to alloy bars bc of my hands and arms getting just worked and I noticed a difference right away. I’m with alloy all the way now.

      @@calebmccalla4715 no its a fact. You can get a carbon bar which is flexing and dampening more than an alloy bar could. So its not a case of opinion(because we can measure it).
      youre on to a misconseption(about material properties and theyre influence on product properties ) and maybe(here comes the opinion part on my side) you should have selected a matching carbon bar for youre demands

    Carbon bars scared the crap out of me back when they became available, maybe 2004? I want to say Race Face bars were the first I used, but can't be sure. However I have since had more carbon bars than alloy, and I certainly trust them 100%, but if I have a crash they go in the bin. Never snapped one, but I know what splintered carbon looks like and prefer it to stay outside my body. One bar I really love is my Thompson Titanium riser, on my cross country bike but I'd be more than happy to put it on my downhill bike

    My carbon bar says to refer to the stem for torque specifications. My stem says refer to the bar for torque specifications.

    0:32 A Bar is a great part to be made out of carbon if its about impacts than why are the best rims made from carbon(they get harder and more impacts than bars
    0:53 clamping dos not create weakpoints
    2:05 bullshit a carbon bar is a high end product you dont need for the sport so its not alienating any one
    2:50 big time bullshit they can be stiff or you can feel disconnected (too flexible) but both is impossible
    3:53 misusing the product is not the fault of the product. its like buying a car to get quicker to work and then driving only backwards (not the fault of the car)
    Over all this video is loaded with misconceptions, Blunt Bullshit and based on anecdotal evidence. So its not helping any one to understand anything but reinforcing wide spread misinformation about carbon.

    carbon are just light thats it carbon is for roadbike the lighter the better, carbon frames and other parts especially on Enduro bike lol.... it will break easily

      its lighter because its stronger per weight so you need less to reach the desired strength. Usually carbon parts are stronger and still lighter

      yes it has superior strength and stiffnes to weight properties while giving the engineers much more freedom and possibilities
