    Personal thoughts on all entries:
00:15 This was the winning entry and is what you hear when you start up Furnace (unless you have the intro set to short or off). It's definitely a nice one.
00:35 A nice calm melody all done with the SNES sound chip and Furnace's Wavetable Synth.
00:51 Personally I like this one more than the winning entry, they're similar in progression but this one hits more. Plus, it reminds me of 80s TV idents.
01:06 Kind of sounds like something you'd hear on a old flip phone and I like that.
01:22 Great use of the TSU. Sounds a bit mystical as well.
01:35 A bit basic but still good.
01:48 "Look! There I am Gary!" I didn't even think I would make it into the top 10.
02:00 This really follows along with the visuals nicely. Idk how exactly we got the same amount of votes.
02:14 An all-in-one for the MegaDrive. FM and PSG goodies.
    02:27 Simple yet effective.
02:41 Very reminiscent of the Sega Saturn Japanese start-up theme.
    02:55 Droplets falling through sky.
    03:10 Very adventurous.
03:28 I feel like the SNES chip may be a tad bit too overpowered for us Chiptune Artists.
03:41 I think that E-Piano sample comes from a Yamaha PSR keyboard.
03:54 I thought this was OPL before I looked at the module file. Good sound design.
04:08 Interesting choice and use of the Namco WSG.
04:21 Hi, It's me again. This one didn't have a lot going for it compared to my first attempt but at least I tried to time it with the visuals.
04:36 Now THIS is OPLL used properly.
    04:51 Over-engineering at it's finest. That's 6 Sound chips used here!
05:09 Sounds a bit like dubstep. OPL3 is great for that it seems.
    05:22 Keygen!!!
05:36 OPL3? Nah, MA-2. An FM sound chip used on some old burner phones but is completely undocumented and discontinued after about a year of production I think.
05:50 Sounds a bit uncanny tbh
06:04 Very basic. I like it.
06:17 Sega Master System at work here.
06:29 Sounds a bit like Carve Your Own Path (An NES+N163 Chiptune made by Abstract).
    06:42 Sounds serious.
06:56 Okay. I like this one.
07:10 Trance is also possible on an OPL3 chip as well it seems.
    07:23 Tim Follin!!!
07:36 Breakbeat sample on an AY chip.
    07:50 tis a long one...
08:12 Is this an earlier version of the other one or...
    08:24 PERFECTION!!11!1!1!

For 3:41 - you would actually be correct! I had hooked up my PSR-e343 to my laptop via the headphone out and recorded it that way.

I like 1:06 if it was shorter & 7:23 deserves to be higher!

Do you have a link to the .fur files for these?

Some of these are simply bangers, a shame plenty of them got the 'Deflemask penalty' for having a similar feel to Deflemask's intro, which Tildearrow was understandably trying to avoid.

I love what we got compared to it lmao. Deflemask's intro is kinda basic compared to furnace lmao. It has such a distinct sound. It's like those Virgin vs Chad memes lmao

Number 10, 16 @ 5:06 & 19 really show how the OPL3 could've sounded, if people didn't care about MIDI implementation back then.

man i wish 0:51 won first place, it sounds so COOL!!!!! i wonder if you can replace the furnace intro music without replacing it in the source code and rebuilding furnace.

A lot of those intros were really good. I wish at least the top 5 entries would be included in Furnace. Deflemask also has more than one intro tune after all. By the way, do you know why does entry number 3 sounds like the winning entry, despite being written by different authors?

    • @Boycraft18462
      @Boycraft18462  Před rokem +1

In the contest you could design the sound around the intro visuals and time everything
It was optional, of course, but it would make it more appealing overall
There was gonna be a chance that two authors would have the same general idea and then branch out from that in their own way
I personally like how entry 3 came out more than the winning entry but it's the majority's word over mine. It's still good either way.

number 3 sounds like if there was a trailer for furnace tracker

I 100% agree that it would be cool if the top 5 entries could play as intro tunes.
