I know this is an older video but I must say you make excellent content. Your attention to detail, and explanation is very helpful.
Thanks for watching and I appreciate the feedback.
You happen to mention that you put a little extra in it after you tighten the bleeder screw.the reason they don't want you doing that is because you need room for expansion with propane. If you fill completely and you leave in the sun it Will explode cause propane expands several times more than water even. Safety first
I would have liked to see him weigh the final result after topping it off. If it was still under the recommended weight, then it would be fine.
you have the best video on these refilling instructions ty sir
Thanks for watching
Been happy with mine. I also bought the brass caps for same reason although the plastics ones they came with have worked well as well. Highly recommend the Flame King and their kit for keeping the cost down. I just bought their 3 oz bottles and I am trying those for camping to light fires, etc etc. The smaller bottle is handier for lighting things like the camp fire when the larger bottle is a little more cumbersome and storage location is small too. I use a weight scale in grams to weigh them before filling and the after weight. So when weighing them I know I am full (80% ish) and have gotten pretty good at judging that from the off gas at the end. Thanks for your video.
I bought 2, 4 years ago when life became on the road.
I lost one last year cause of a tweaked nipple that wouldn't seat right after I screwed it on wrong, but since I live on this it has been filled over 200 times.
I bought mine for $15 each and have saved over $600.
I've used mine on my lil buddy and all my stoves.
In April, wally world's 1# bottles went to 5 bucks so now I like this even better 👍👍😁
Just ordered my single kit today. Tanks are really expensive. I'll wait...thx for sharing the video. 👍😊
Just an FYI regarding the wrench. I drill a small hole in the plastic cover splines (across the opening from one side to the other) as a holder. Has worked fine. Be nice if they did it at the factory.
I have a T handle that small I use on my home station. I have 8 of those wrenches. I have 8 bottles. so i got 1 with each bottle. They live in a labeled ziplock bag in my junk drawer. If i ever need them.
Great followup!
I have a mix of the Flame Kings and regular 1lb'ers. Can't find the FK refiilables any where now though... bought 4 at Menards a couple of years ago for $12 each....so easy to use...not a big fan of the regular bottles with all the "burping" to get the max amount in... Guess I'm getting grumpy and picky in my old age.
No need to burp if you do it right. The Flame Kings seem to be going for more like $20 per bottle now, don't know that it is a wise investment vs just using empty Burnzomatic greens
I've been using these for at least 3 years camping. I take a 20lb tank , 4 flame king tanks, and the refill kit with me. I run my little buddy heater of the 20 lb. tank and refill the flame king tanks for the stove and lantern as needed.
Exactly my plan too. 👍😃
Love Flame King have 10 bottles Used them for 5 years camping never have one problem with them, Great system !!!!
Yep, i have 8 right now, and getting more. So convenient. I way overpaid for mine, but no regrets. Nice to have them full for backups.
@@rodx5571 they’re over $60.00 CAN. Rediculous price for a single 1 lb. I’ll wait...
@@mattwaters6987 now is the time. They are less than half that on Amazon now. Buy as a 2 pack.
@Rod X thx for the heads up Rod. Just ordered what you suggested. They ship to Canada too. $70.00 CAN. (2pak) That's cheap. 👍😀
@@mattwaters6987 i may order a few more myself. Scheels has them too. Last i checked they were 19.99 USD. But they were out of stock.
You can get a full charge by burping the small bottles with a punch or drill bit for 4-5 seconds. do it with the bottle upright, depress the valve inside the threaded nipple, then fill again with the large tank. DO THIS OUTSIDE WITH NO IGNITION SOURCES NEARBY🔥, DO NOT MESS WITH THE VALVE ON THE BOTTLE ITSELF, it's a safety blow off valve that works opposite of the main valve. only do it 2 times, and weigh the bottle. it should be between 15-16 oz net, if its a little over, bleed it down with your punch.
I use these 1lb bottles with a big buddy propane furnace, and it's nice to get a full bottle run without having to get out of a nice warm sleeping bag :o)
You are referring to the disposable tanks, not refillable ones like these Flame Kings. They are designed differently.
Lost in the desert...
lol...@@mackellyman5642
I have 8 of the FK refillable 1 lb. The green short ones. I also have the brass caps. I have them not for leaks, but for moisture and trash infiltration. I really like the refillables. I live off grid full time. I use catalytic heaters, and buddy heaters depending on how cold it is. For any road trip i take the FK refillables. I do have some disposables i do a half fill on for grills and stoves. Strangely, on the disposables, there is what looks like a schrader, It is NOT a schrader. However you can crack it open. (its about an inch long, and is a plug that unscrews with a deep schrader tool. its not a valve). Its dangerous to do, but this allows a near full (80% just like the refillables) refill in the same amount of time. As i said i don't recommend this, but if you have ever wondered................ I NEVER transport these as there are DOT laws against this.
For my refill rig, I have a piece of plywood with a couple pieces of 2x4 screwed down to support bottle and a portable saw table i sit it on for ease of use and a no fall situation. Works great.
Just curious, where did you buy the flameking refillable tanks. I’ve never been able to find them anywhere accept online at a greatly inflated price
@@JodyDWard yeah I took it in the shorts on ebay. Better than amazon though. About 25$ a can. But then I found Scheels in Dallas. A sporting goods retailer, at 19.99 a can. Free shipping over 100$. A far superior deal. They are out as of this moment. But should be in stock soon. Also home depot pro goes by Ebarnett has them pretty cheap, full pro dealer. Hope this helps. EDIT: as much 1lb bottles as I use, even being gouged for the refillable it's a net win for me in short order. And a great convenience.
@@rodx5571 great! Thanks for the info
@@JodyDWard I got mine for $30 w/free shipping on Amazon...(.local

I knew it was a bit to much so I only got enough to try...then I seen Scheels...but haven't researched that ...sounds like you'll need to bulk buy perhaps?
@@jonjacobjingleheimerschmid3798 I didn’t know about Scheels. Looks like that will solve my problem. Thanks!
I wonder why Coleman or any other company doesn't make a refillable 1lb tank. Well, more power to Flame King. I read that 40 million disposable 1 pound cylinders are thrown away every year in the US.
Should be a crime the way our life style destroys the planet.
Probably because Coleman is the one making a killing off of the disposables going up in price.
Great video, boy these little tanks are going for 50 bucks plus, you used to be able to buy a big 20 pound tank brand new for that price and I have a 1 pounder but won’t buy any more till the prices come down
Menards his then for 15.99 2 weeks ago
Attach the hex key too the filler valve assembly with a long enough piece of cord or leather strap, just nothing that will build up static or spark.
Menards has Flame King refillables for $16@ 2/9/23 West Bend Wisconsin.
Doesn't it waste a lot of gas keeping the relief open the whole time?
The way I do it is to let it fill with the valve closed until it stops, and then open the relief for 3 secondes and close it. Listen for more liquid flowing in until it stops. Repeat this 4 or 5 times until you see the liquid venting.
Correct! all that's happening is the propane in the small tank is boiling off trying to reach the equilibrium of temp/pressure. Keep the small tank cold in an ice bath and the large tank warm (sunshine, hair dryer etc.) and the refrigerant (propane is a refrigerant btw) will move from higher temp/pressure to lower temp/pressure. This will probably over fill the tank so, with the supply valve closed or disconnected from the large tank, open the allen key "spit valve" till it quits spitting liquid.
I used to deliver propane cylinders (for about a month, I never worked so hard in my life, handbombing 15000 lbs of propane and cylinders a day was not for me) this was exactly how they filled the forklift tanks at the depot. They opened the little spit valve and filled till it sprayed liquid out. I often wondered if there could be a way to recover it as it seemed wasteful
@@juliogonzo2718 I delivered propane for over 10 years. The valve shown being opened is not a "relief valve", it is the "Fixed maximum liquid level valve". The valve is connected to a dip tube inside the tank that is of a precise length. When the liquid propane rises to the level of that tube, the vapor that was exiting the valve is replaced with liquid. That becomes a very noticeable change in appearance and lets you know that the cylinder has reached 80% capacity (Full!). The vapors lost during filling is a negligible amount of actual liquid propane.
I bought one refill kit which inclided 1 refillable bottle and bought 4 extra refillable bottles a few yeats ago from Home Depot on line. The bottles were originally about $15 and had been discounted toabout $8. I think they were all fixing to expire from the manufacturing date but still a good deal since I can refill them myself anyway. Then later I found out that there was a recall on some of the Flame King bottles. I checked and the bottle serial numbers that I had were not in the numbers of the recalled cylinders. Since then I wanted to pick up a few more but but can't find anybody that has them in stock unless the price is way over $30 or the refil kit with only one bottle. I don't think these have been in production for a while and the really expensive ones online are probably left over stock.
Yes, they have been really hard to find. If I see them at the original price I buy them. I have several now.
lol you should try buying them from australia today .... did my head in ( and my bank account) but i got some
@@sabinekatsavrias4422 They were out of production for a while, probably because of the recall. Recently they seem to be available again. Amazon has them for $15 to $17.00 (US) if you buy 2 or 4 at a time. This actually isn't a bad price, considering they were about $15 new right before I bought mine a few years ago. Apparently the ones I bought for $8 each were being closed out since the dates were expiring.
Recently I bought 2 tall Flame King 1 lb refillable cylinders & 2 Flame king 1/4 lb cylinders. It appears the 1/4 lb cylinders are a new product.
A piece of bright colored tape wrapped on the allen key as a "flag" makes the key very visible , less likely to be lost.
Make your alen key magnetic and it stores under the bottom ring.
Haven't lost it in 3 years and almost 200 fills 😁
Just find a Allen screw driver the right size and forget messing with that tiny Allen wrench, much more handy using a screw driver just don’t moose it to tight
i think im gonna hit mine with some neon nail polish or micro string and put a recycled magnet from packaging that my anchor power bank came in ( had a tiny magnet in the box closure so i cut it out) gonna stick the tiny magnet under the cylinder near the edge n let it hold the key:)
You can get that allen key with a screw driver handle , better to use and wont get lost
I have a "T" handle. I also have 8 of those keys. 1 with each bottle.
That's a great idea, I'm always loosing that little thing in plain sight
After the Flame King 1 lb bottle is full, and you use the Allen key to shut off the overflow, and you release the handle to stop the flow of propane is it safer to also shut off the valve at the 20 lb bottle before unscrewing the 1 lb bottle? I saw that you just released the handle, and proceeded to remove the bottle, but I think that in case the flow of propane had not fully stopped, that it would be safer to have both valves shut off. What do you think?
The reason why you stop after closing that valve is to allow room for expansion. Imagine your in a nice cold room just perfect size, theres a little bit of room for you to move and if it gets warmer you can move around and expand a little. Now imagine your locked inside the kitchen cupboard. and it gets hot, you want out, you need room to move, you cant because the door is locked and the expansion room you would usually have is not there, the only solution is to bust the door off and get out. Gas in this case is under so much pressure it turns into a liquid. It doesnt want to be in that state, it wants to expand. so the cylinder needs to be strong enough to withstand expansion, but if you fill entirely it only takes one poor weld or seam on that tank to give and bam, your nice green cylinder is exploding everywhere like a fragmentation grenade. Super damgerous.
So what you’re saying is don’t top it off like he was in that video? Once you see a little of the gas come out stop right away?
Hyper exaggeration.
@@Squirt69 no, it’s all about safety and being smart about it dude! smh
@@mattwaters6987exactly, same as the camping bottles you buy to transport white gas or alcohol for the stoves, it tells you and marks you where to stop refilling, in other words you buy a 1 liter bottle but in essence you refill to aprox 750 ml. to have room for expansion.
I have thought about this situation particularly this one..he is filling em to the max out in the collllllllllld then storing in his warm car.... later they may even go in his warmer house ? who knows@@mattwaters6987
Thanks for the update.
You should never “Chooch” after filling….the reason it is only 80% filled is to allow for gas expansion in warmer weather!
“Chooching” defeats this very important safety protocol! Just don’t do it … why take the risk? Definitely not worth it for the potential small gas gain and the consequences you are taking chances on! Totally NOT ADVISED!!! Be safe!!! Gas is a serious explosive hazard!!! Enough said!!
1 lb single use tanks I saw for 7 bucks each yesterday at Ace hardware in California, plus you also pay a 10% sales tax, $7.70 each fjb and his inflation. drill baby drill!
Maybe good to paint the allan key 🗝 so it's easier to find?
That's exactly what I did. 👍😊
Where did you get the caps? Thanks for the vidio. I’m sick of those green tanks, they are up and over $8.00 now. I bought four last summer, attached them to my small camping BBQ. Two of the damn things were basically empty from just sitting so long on the store shelf. I basically pissed $16.00 away. Flipping over that business I’m getting those refillable canisters.
These are the caps I have, purchased through Amazon. www.amazon.com/dp/B07CMFWX7S/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_apa_gl_i_F1H53MQDYW8T09V7CFYZ?linkCode=ml2&tag=dtrofishon-20
I have ordered 4 of this tanks and 2 of this tanks have a kind of tiny, hard, white glue on the pressure release valve inside the brass head (next to ON/OFF Valve/o-ring) and the other 2 do not have this white glue!!! does anybody know what that white stuff could be and if that belongs there?
So they fit the little buddy heater

The Flame King kit not available for quite some time. Also, the individual bottles are way too expensive. Way way too expensive.
Menards recently had the kit for $40 and the tanks for $15
@@3RiversFishingAdventures lucky you; my menards hasn't had them for months and months and amazon wants $56.00 unavailable.
I bought it too. It stinks up my clothing, and there is obviously a lot of waste. Going forward, I don't think I will shoot for filling the 1 lb. bottles full. Partial filling should cut down on the waste. Also, why hassle with this unless necessary? What I mean is: I bought a heater for $20 (Black Friday sale) that goes on top of a 20 lb. tank. With that, there's no waste, and I don't have to stink up my clothes or be hassled with filling 1 lb. bottles. That's my two cents.
Because you can't bring the barbecue tanks indoors.
I believe a filter would be useful also.
Where do u buy the brass caps ?
I just picked up 3 tanks at lowes for $16.99 each
I just use empty 1 lb Bernzomatic cylinders, works great and the price is better 🙂
Northern Tool has them for sale
Brass Caps? Where did you get those? Would they fit the dark green bottles as well?
Here's the ones I bought and yes they fit the Coleman tanks too. amzn.to/3oeWH9b
Would it be true to think that having a Big Buddy inside using 2 cylinders would be safer than using a Big Buddy with the Big Buddy hose and filter, going under a window bottom to an outside 20 lb. Cylinder?
Well, having the window cracked open certainly makes it safer.
How much money is saved?
These little tanks are throw aways disposable tanks instead of taking chances with leaks or fires buy a convertor hose adapter and use the 20 lb cylinder itself
Sorry you are wrong. They are approved to be refilled and certified for 13 years.
flame king tanks have been recalled

@@mattstone8878 I’m sorry, it’s for Deborah Abercrombie above, I was asking for the link where she read that Flame King tanks has been recalled.
Ms. Deborah, I was asking for the link where you’ve read that Flame King tanks has been recalled.
YSN Imports Inc., doing business as Flame King, of Gardena, Calif., has recalled about 24,000 refillable propane cylinders because they can leak propane gas, posing fire and explosion hazards, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced on July 13.Jul 17, 2017 2017, 4 years ago
Thanks, i wondered why I couldn't find them. I was blaming the whole cargo ship/supply chain debacle.
Show the right hole . It has several all around. Show close up please. And how to release some propane. Direction say don't overfill. I cut the sleeve off the bottle. Has some warnings behind that cover. I need close up to see where Allen key in valve. Thanks and yes it's not legal to haul the green bottles they sell Coleman. Be safe guys !
The right hole is the one that's got the hex shape. Put your glasses on.
Does the Flame King kit work with the 1lb coleman bottles?
No, they have a peg added inside the 1 lb cylinder attachment, in order to prevent disposables from being put on it.
Do you have to condition the tanks before you fill them the first time?
No you do not
How are your tanks holding up after 4 years? TIA.
I had to replace the seal on 2 of them, but this is after 100s of refills. Very impressed.
@@3RiversFishingAdventures Thanks. Do they sell these seals ? Thanks again.
@@l.nguyen860 the company sent them to me for free. I have a video here on my channel demonstrating the fix.
Can you refill any tanks or just the flame king kind?
Just Flame King tanks. You can modify it to work with regular tanks though.
The refillable tanks have thicker walls to withstand repeated fillings. The disposable ones are thinner and metal fatigue is an issue from repeated stretching and contracting. I’m not saying they will burst and have refilled them myself. I won’t anymore since I have refillable ones and am educated to the real hazards of repeated refilling of the disposable ones. If I were to refill one now, I would not put much in due to pressure on the thin walls of the tank.
I have 4 can’s and one the valve is leaking propane I don’t know how to fix it
Email Flame King and they will send small o-rings.
Can you tell me what a full.tank weighs ?
Each tank has it's own Tare weight so it varies, but roughly 2.5lbs
Why don't u just get the hose & connect the 20#?
Because I don't want to lug around a big 20lb tank, and yes I know they make 5 and 10lbers, but honestly this Flame King refill works awesome and so convenient. I've filled these over 100 times.
Where do you get the valves to hook tank to 1 lb. bottles?
Also, my empty bottles are the dark green Coleman bottles. Not sure they have a bleed off.
Thanks!
Here is a link to the valve: amzn.to/3GXMIOe It can ONLY be used with the Flame King brand tanks (which are currently hard to find). The Coleman type tanks will not work and are not intended to be refilled.
@@3RiversFishingAdventures I suspect Flame King only does small scheduled production runs. In between those runs I have seen e-bay sell them for 5 times the price of new. A little bit of price gouging like you mentioned.
Will the Coleman Bottles work too ?
No they will not. There is a plastic tab that aligns with the Flame King tanks. You could probably modify them to work, but I'm not interested in that.
DO you weigh them empty and full? I find I can fill gradually that way....should be around 16oz full BTW. You cant know if they are full without weighing them
With these Flame Kings, it's always the same fill every single time. No need to weigh them. That's why they are so great.
The liquid coming out is your indicator. No need for scale.
“Sure beats buying the 1lbers”. Ya……(.50 vs $5.49)
I wait until my 5 gallon propane tank is nearly empty. then I fill my 1 lb bottles. Then, with a completely empty tank I go get a refill. That way i'm not paying for the residual gas in the tank for a second time.
You’re not paying for residual gas you’re being charged only by the amount is put in.
@@carmenmartinez2882

How long can you store the little 1 pound tanks when full?
just about as long as you want
I had 1 pound tanks still full after 22 years when stored for the Y2K disaster that never happened.
Have some in my shed for about 10yrs now. Thinking of it, I should get the out n use them
As a general rule it is best to use them. While there is no specific time limit non-use can cause fittings to seize up , seals to become brittle etc.
$25/bottle is ridiculous...and Amazon wants $57//bottle. This might be a good idea, but they are priced out of the market

@@priestesslucy3299 Flame King itself sells on eBay; probably demand is high. Not enough to sell through Costco, Walmart, or other vendors.
I can't believe you don't check your work with a scale. This seems so foolish.
With the valve design of this system, it's impossible to overfill. That's the great part about it. Exact fill every time.
It's not necessary with a re-fillable. The Flame King has an internal fixed level tube. When the liquid reaches that level tube liquid will be forced to come out of the bleeder valve. The liquid inside the tank is not at the level of the bleeder but the bottom of the level tube. The caveat of course is that the tank must always be filled vertically.

No one including you seems to be concerned about the groove and notch lining up!!! I'm sure it has a purpose otherwise they would not have spent the time and money making the adapter and tank neck this way. Why are you not paying any attention to following this instruction?
Because mine broke off soon after using it. They had it there to prevent people from refilling disposable tanks, but like I said, mine snapped off. Some people broke theirs intentionally.
Yes, you are correct. If your kit isn't broken, then you do need to line those up, and I have always done that. I imagine people broke them because they just didn't understand what was even in there.
