Autonomous drones fly through Chinese bamboo forest

    This swarm of 10 autonomous drones can manoeuvre through a bamboo forest in China. They are the first to successfully fly outdoors and navigate unprogrammed obstacles, according to researchers at Zhejiang University who led the experiment.

      Yeah, imagine these drones with explosives attached, destroying targets kamikaze-style. You run into a dense forest, and they slowly advance on you, and all you hear behind you is the howling of their motors. That would be pretty plausible even with today's technology.

    I have read this report somewhere else. These drones don't rely on internet connection, but process data on these drones themselves, which is why it made the front page of science magazines.

      Agree. All I see is how can this be use to tracks enemies in dense vegetation forest. Arm with heat seeking sensor camera you can scan for enemies hidden in the jungle.

      The test was carried out in the Hainan Island . Information can be sent back to the Chinese military on those militarised islands and fire one topedo or even the aircraft carrier. Kaboom!

      To map underwater, they would need to be far more than just waterproof. They would need different propulsion systems, but the guidance system could surely be retrofitted to avoid underwater obstacles.

    These are much more efficient than search-and-rescue dogs in locating victims being stranded in deep forest. While waiting for the arrival of the rescuse team, the drones can deliver food and first aids supplies once the victims are being located. This will save a lot of lives.

    according to publication on this project, these drones rely only on wireless communiction between themselves and depth cameras for collision avoidance and navigation. so there is no cellular coverage (3/4/5/6G, etc) , no prior knowledge of the enrionment, for instance, maps and so on.

      This is 100% going to be used in warfare. They can already autonomously map and navigate through a forest, it won’t take long before they can detect and follow heat signatures and explode when in proximity. They will be floating claymore swarms in no time and research will be accelerated even further with military $$$

    imagine waking up in 2050 in the middle of the night to get a glass of water and you just hear and see a swarm of drones flying out the woods towards your nearest military base and critical infrastructure....now imagine it in 2030 because thats the more likely year

    Everyone’s worried but I though this was brilliant in case someone was lost in mountains or so this would be a great method to scan and search at a fast pace rather that having a crowd searching for people.

    As a FPV racing pilot, I am use to hearing 5 or 6, 5 inch racing quads accelerate around a track. Its loud and violent. But to hear those screaming thru the woods with pusher props all by themselves, is the making of nightmares for some. Lol

    As someone who has never seen a Bamboo forest in real life, I was surprised to see it doesn’t appear to be that dense. Perhaps there’s a logical reason why but I’ve seen Bamboo clusters so tight, light has a hard time getting through it, let alone flying robots. However l, that’s also just when people put it in their yards here in the US. Probably a different species, etc.

    Well that just rendered conventional infantry tactics obsolete. All you need to do is to add a thermal sensor, an explosive and a mechanism to identify friend from foe.
